Wow! It's truly a shock to me to see that games are still being developed for the Master System.

As a huge Sega fan back then, I was mainly an arcades visitor/gamer during the heyday of the Master System. But I still owned a Master System and really liked it.
Very cool console ! Like you i was an arcade gamer at the time so i wasn't that impressed first.(except a few gems like Phantasy Star, Dragon's Trap)

What impressed me is the second life of the console when 16 bits were already on the market.
I mainly played on the Gen/Snes in the 90's but geez... the SMS received some fucking impressive ports, sometimes better than the 16 bits counter parts like Sonic 1, Mickey games... as a technical showcase, Master of Darkness was up there as well (i would dream of a 16 bits port 😍).

80's kids had a good time with SMS but with Sonic, Disney games and so much AAA, 90's kids had probably a blast with the new era Master System 😛

There are quite a few games actually, and a strong community.

The funny thing about the Sega Master System is that the main reason I got this system in the first place was to be able to play many arcades games that I loved at home. This includes Sega games that originated in the arcades like Hang-On (which came with the system), Space Harrier, Shinobi, After Burner, Thunder Blade, Alien Syndrome, plus a few non-Sega personal favorites from the arcades ported over to the Master System like Double Dragon, Rastan, Vigilante, R-Type and Time Soldiers. But it turned out the very best Master System games were the single player games created specifically for this system. Games like the Zillion series, Spellcaster, Golvellius, Choplifter, Rambo: First Blood Part II (Ikari Warriors clone), Rambo III (light gun game), Space Harrier 3D (Master System-exclusive spin-off game played with 3D glasses on), Zaxxon 3D (another Master System-exclusive spin-off game from arcade using 3D glasses), the Alex Kidd series, the Wonder Boy series, and of course the original Phantasy Star made it worthwhile for me to keep the system around.

Still to this day I am curious on how an updated or remastered version of the first Zillion and Spellcaster would turn out. I thought these particular games were really unique and also amazing when they came out.
