NeoGAF's best of iOS

Yeah I am very reluctant to buy apps that are not universal if they are charging for two separate apps. It's just unnecessary nickel and diming.
To me it depends - if an app is released with an iPad & iPhone version, then yeah it rubs me wrong a bit. But if a developer creates an iPad version later on I think they deserve to be paid for the work put into the iPad version so I have nothing against them releasing it seperately.

Anyways, bought a few apps recently, awesome stuff.

"Definition", best dictionary app out there for everything words.

"Word Lens" is a pretty amazing augmented reality translation app. I got it just because i'm hoping that the future updates will keep adding new languages, so it's a travel investment, even.

"TinyChat" is back up after being pulled a while back. Apparently it's buggy, and password-rooms don't let me join, but it'll be worth it when they update it, as long as it stays up.

"Camera Genius" is definitely my stock camera replacement, and imo, better than Camera+ by a longshot.

"Everyday" was probably a waste of money, but it's gonna be awesome one day. Take a pic of yourself every day, and thanks to the alignment grid, have each pic be aligned properly. Allows THIS, basically.

"SkyView" and "Star Walk" for star mapping and planetary info as well as augmented reality solar system orbit viewing. Awesome stuff.

"PhotoForge 2" is quite simply the most robust photo editing app out there, right next to Snapspeed.

"Video Stream" for streaming all of my MBP content over the air, as well as converting/storing them locally for later viewing. Best video streaming app out there (better than Air Video imo).

"Plex" for my Plex Media Library only MBP, wonderful app for Plex-specific content streaming.

And then there's the obvious stuff like Tweetbot, Clacbot, Convertbot, Pastebot, along with Wikipanion+, Instapaper, and a useful app called "Offline Pages Pro".

I know I probably blew through this way too fast, but what the hell, it's been a long time since i've actually bought new apps. :)

PS. Also bought some great games; GTA3, Osmos, Minecraft, Tiny Wings, Cut the Rope, & Tetris. :p
To add to this list: WordFoto. It's a pretty awesome app that allows you to make typographical mosaics on the fly. Here's some I just made on my phone;

Only cons is that it doesn't allow for more than ten words to use. But it has great features that help make it look good, multiple fonts, cropping ability, preset styles, etc.

Definitely recommend it for some fun.

Can anyone please recommend an alternative to Flixster? I hate that you cannot remove ratings.

Preferably something that lets me add films to my 'to see' list, and also quickly and easily see what films are on in my local cinema. Ratings would be a bonus

Thanks!

What about in the case of developing an app, but instead of charging $6 for it, they end up charging $3 for the iPhone version and $3 for the iPad version?

What about very large apps where you don't want the app to contain a version or asset space for the device you don't have?

Does Tweetbot offer tweet read syncronization like Echofon does it? I really want a prettier Twitter app, but the functionality of Echofon is so nice.

Clear looks great, but I wonder if there is any reminder functionality. Or if one will just have to stick to..Reminders.

Yea I don't think there is which sucks.

I'll use Siri/Reminders for time sensitive things to remember and Clear for my general to do.

Doesn't seem that way, unfortunately.

I can already imagine a neat interface where holding on a 'task' brings up a date/time dial of sorts which you spin to match the time you want, and release.

Wonder why they didn't implement some type of notification system..

Bummer. I find Reminders to be pretty sluggish and Clear looks great, but I think I use the notification reminders too frequently to completely switch.

So, Screens as an app is pretty great. But holy jesus the icon is ugly. Why do they have such a terrible icon.

Snapseed is free right now.
Sweet, thanks a lot! Gotta spread the word - in my opinion, this app should be on every iPad. Fantastic mix of quick filters and effects, as well as powerful, yet intuitive tools like the Selective Adjust feature.

The day Snapseed gets RAW support, I will be a spiritually fulfilled man. Requires suifficiently powerful silicon, of course - iPad 4, maybe?

Can't wait for Clear! In the mean time, I bought some apps to help me keep track of new music releases from my artists, and discover new music.

MusicWatch is a good app for what it tries to do, which is show new releases from all your artists (or artists you don't have) in a list fashion similar to the iPod/stock music view.

Just found some new singles and album releases from artists I didn't realize had anything new.

Second is an awesome app called "Discovr Music" (and no that's not a typo). It is just such a beautiful app for what it does, and the interface is awesome.

I loved it so much I decided to support them and buy there other app called "Discovr Apps" which is the exact same interface and style but for finding cool new applications. I love it.

The interface is just gorgeous in my opinion, and I can legitimately discover so much about artists, that I knew about or not, through the smart interface. Does the same for Apps;

They'll soon have out 'Discovr Movies' which is self explanatory, which I think i'll also be buying. Great stuff imo.

[EDIT] Just noticed the interface in these old screenshots isn't even as good as the newer stuff, but I think you get the idea.

But the description says it supports RAW?
Yes - however, from what I understand it does not operate directly with the raw data, but instead with the JPEG preview embedded in the raw file. It's quite rare for iOS apps to handle raw data directly, and those that do run pretty slow (PiRAWnha on an iPad 2 takes ~7 seconds for each edit to show, for instance.)

So in other words, not enough computing power for smooth raw editing in the current generation devices. Seeing as each generation iPad tends to get several-fold increases in power however, it's perhaps not too far away - maybe already in the iPad 3, but I doubt the speed Snapseed requires will be feasible before iPad 4.

From the tweets by Clear, there are some hidden features/gestures and special themes that you can get (one of which you get from Tweetbot).

Edit: just got it and a few minutes in I'm already blown away. So good

God I hate the effing delay between it being released and showing up/searchable on the app store on the device. Get with the program Apple. I am not always near freaking iTunes.

Oh is this a regular thing? I was wondering if I was doing something wrong. Oh well. I just saw that it's a dollar, so I'll pass.

Can anyone post what the other themes look like? No screens anywhere out there except for the heat map version.

Can't wait to buy this, but unfortunately I need to go to an internet cafe net to get iTunes to work, since they use custom IP's or something where otherwise anytime I buy something an error pops up.

Have to wait a day or two before I can go again, dammit this is gonna be a bitch to wait for. /firstworldproblems

Follow their twitter from inside the app.

lol

A whole dollar is a bank breaker I'm afraid.

There are several themes that are secret and no one has found yet.

I'll try get some shots up.

Edit: from twitter i found that you can get themes for tweeting about clear when it asks and for finishing 50-100 todos. You also get themes or having certain apps

Yes. I feel guilty about a dollar purchase. :/
The great thing about apps is how cheap they are. A dollar is nothing when you think about it. Especially when you get an app that will last for a long, long time and be extremely useful.

That being said, I have wasted some of my money on crappy apps.

Here's a picture with the main themes (including the tweetbot special and special for following their twitter - scorched).

Hopefully the picture is clear.

Oh yeah, picked up clear while on break at work. Its really fun. Great app.
The icon is too dark though, its thrown off the balance of my homescreen.

The interface of Clear does indeed seem amazing, but I can't help but hope either some serious development is put into making it more functional, or (sadly) someone rips it off and makes it into something better

No web app?
No sync between iPhone, iPad and my girlfriend's Android?
No repeating/timed reminders?
No way to see all urgent reminders?

Also what does the 'Pull up to clear' option do?

I think it does a lot right, but it's not quite enough to replace Wunderlist for me just yet...

Lets just take a moment to ponder the differences between the word "clear" and the word "wunderlist."

It removes finished tasks from the list.

Sure those features would be nice but I like the simplicity. I used to be a wunder user but reminders was more useful. I never use the sync.

To be fair, the complaints I had were probably more valid than 'the icon is too dark!'

Anyhow, sorry, I do see your point, but all of those with the exception of repeat/timed reminders could be easily integrated without losing the simple functionality.

In particular being able to sync between my iPhone (out and about)/iPad (at home), a web app (when I'm at work), and my girlfriend's Android phone is absolutely essential for me.

It removes finished tasks from the list.

Ah, I see! thank you. That's pretty cool, to be able to remove finished tasks with an easy gesture like that. Interesting you went from Wunder to Reminders. I did the same, but went right back quite shortly after, not least because I hate in Reminders.app that you can't set priorities (in any meaningful way) or even re-order lists.

That icon is insidiously designed to draw attention away from all the other icons your homescreen. Thats some bullshit.

Are there any simple reminder apps that allow you to keep their entry in notification center until they've been completed? Preferably without needing to set a date either (otherwise I'd just use the default app).

I have echofone/twitter/tweetdeck on the ipad and I always just use default twitter for IOS. whats so good about tweetbot that makes it an essential purchase. Have bought games for $.99 so the $2.99 price tag seems like they're asking a bit too much for it (especially when I've bought 2-3 other tweeting software)

Got Clear, played with it for a while, and I agree with Gaaraz: it's fast, intuitive and nice to use, but I has so many functionalities lacking that I can't even consider it as a replacement for Reminders.
At least, at the very least, I need timed reminders, and it has to sync with the iPad (well, first step would be to have an iPad version of it).

I don't think it's radically better (Tweetbot compared to default iOS client, that is), but it has a very nice interface, allows customized gestures, and has some extra functionalities.
I got Tweetbot for my iPhone for 0.79€ and have been using it ever since, with no plans to come back to the default client.
Will probably get the iPad version if it's ever on sale.
