NeoGAF's best of iOS

Heads up folks. there are rumblings that Google Chrome is coming to iOS

http://gigaom.com/mobile/chrome-for-ios-coming-as-mobile-browser-wars-ensue/

Google’s Chrome browser is assumed to be coming for Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices by at least one analyst group. On Tuesday, Macquarie (USA) Equities Research released a lengthy note explaining what this would mean for both companies, suggesting it could reduce the amount of money Google pays to Apple for the use of Google searches in the native iOS Safari browser. Given the growth of iOS devices sales and usage, the reduction in such payments could be meaningful says Macquarie, if users transition from Safari to Chrome on iOS.

While the analysis of such an outcome makes sense, there’s a key problem that history has already proven true: Odds of a third-party browser on iOS becoming a major success are very limited at best.

Why? Because although Apple now allows such browsers — it originally didn’t — none of them can be set as the default browser, meaning all links in emails, texts or other apps will always open in Safari, regardless of what other browsers are installed. That’s a big usability barrier that gives Safari a competitive advantage on iOS, no matter how great Chrome is. Ironically, Google (as well as Mozilla) are grumbling about Microsoft giving its own Internet Explorer an advantage on Windows 8 as well.

Macquarie’s note suggests that Chrome for iOS will get approved this quarter and is likely to have such limitations. I can’t speak to the timing, but I have zero doubt that the current default browser limitation will apply to a version of Chrome on Apple devices, just as it does with Dolphin HD, Opera and others.

safari is so clunky. is there even gestures? I hate not having an easy way to tab through pages etc or quickly close the browser. really hate it.

Clunky?

It's the least clunky browser there is. It looks the best and is the most streamlined. Every other option looks like shit.

Gestures would be nice though.

I always feel weird using Safari. But then again I've been a Chrome man for years. Think it comes down to what you're comfortable with. I currently use Safari and then Atomic as my secondary browser and I'd be happy to ditch Atomic.

Got any pictures of a web browser that looks nicer than Safari? Has to have full retina support and look good. No crappy icons or a load of toolbars or useless buttons.
I have to agree, i'd like to use a viable alternative but I honestly don't think i've found it.

there's nothing to safari. its got no look to it and its awfully plain.

the ability to 2 finger close a tab makes atomic a bazillion times more useable than safari.

atomic. OPEN lots of tabs. loads it all. read it. close tab swipe down, next tab.

wonderful.

Having no look to it and being awfully plain is exactly how a web browser should be.

Apple doesn't really do that with small-scale features. They buy companies that do stuff they can plan on integrating long-term and then pitching it as marquee feature (Siri).

Not at all, the coverflow view was initially a third-party app that Apple bought and integrated into iTunes, then later the rest of the system. So there is precedent for them doing this kind of thing but honestly I think they'll just tout their Reader/Reading List functionality and let Instapaper/Pocket etc. get on with it.

Are there any apps that give you Facebook notifications without the FB app installed? There are several for Android.

EDIT: I am trying Boxcar.

Atomic looks like shit inside and out, tbh. The only real visually appealing browsers i've come across are iCab and Mercury.
Can't you go full screen like the other browsers? But no matter what once Chrome is out, this argument won't matter.

TwitchTV app has been updated to take less of the brokerdness out.

-Fix crashes related to All Games list.
-Fix crashes related to search.
-Fixed crashes related to memory issues.

Maybe it'll work properly now. The last update really fucked a lot of things that were working before up.

The atomic icon is ugly for sure but I can't stand using safari. The time between new pages opening (that animation) is so bothersome. Tab management is the only reason I use atomic over safari, no gestures or anything.

They really broke Instacast in the latest update
:(

- Unskippable boot screen
- crashes all the time
- slow, choppy (but I have iPhone 4S? What is this supposed to run on, if not that?)
- fucked up some of my subscriptions (refused to display newer eps of Tested and Bombcast until I deleted and re added them. It then tried to download 130+ episodes of Tested even though settings say only to cache the latest episode.)
-Can't "refresh all episodes" command within the new playlists .. Problem is that the "latest episodes" screen is now a playlist. That's pretty much the most important screen!
- IAP for instacast pro now? Does it fix all the new problems, cause I'd pay if it did that ... even though it's ransom. :p

The old one was so good :(

Just get Downcast. i did it awhile back when I wanted the iPad version w/iCloud sync. Plus, it has some nifty features Instacast didn't have.

Does anyone else use Tweetbot + Tweetmarker? I have Tweetmarker working with Chrome Twitter on Mac & PC, Twitter app for Android, but it just doesn't seem to be working with Tweetbot at all. Their help calls out Tweetmarker (saying it's indicated by a blue flag) but I don't see a setting nor do I see it working.

I switched to iCloud syncing with tweetbot - mostly because I find the web version of Twitter to be absolutely miserable.

Before Tweetbot had iCloud - i used Tweetmarker. But with Tweetmarker I always found it best to at least exit Tweetbot (pushing the home button) when done reading. This seemed to sync 'cleaner' for me.

Will do, thanks. Yeah I read across so many different types of devices iCloud won't cut it for me. Glad that it actually works with Tweetbot though -- was worried there.

Feeddler Pro or River of News, I prefer Feeddler Pro since it is universal and has a cleaner look

or just use mobile version of google reader (since the google web apps suck on iPad due to that the scrolling is shit)

After searching high and low, and weighing up the pros and cons of several others, I recently picked up Mr. Reader - I haven't regretted it at all, and would highly recommend it. Syncs really well, and I've found that it allows me to wade through my countless feeds really efficiently. Nicely put together app, lots of nice little touches, I reckon.

Edit: the slideshow thing on the website gives a really good overview of its features.

Yikes, totally forgot about this thread. Thanks for the recommendations. Feature-wise they seem to be pretty nice, on the other hand they are quite ugly.

Anyone of you following Silvio Rizzi on Twitter (I don't use it); has he mentioned anything about a Reeder for iPad update? I want an revised feed list.

Furthermore, is there any reason apart from personal taste to use Pocket instead of Readability or vice-versa? I tried both, both have pros and cons, and I am totally not able to decide which one to use. Readability has the disadvantage of not being supported by Zite on my iPad, as I noticed just now.

I've been using Atomic Web Browser. The main thing I like about it is the ability to switch what it identifies as (mobile or desktop) and the fact that it has its own file manager.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
I didn't remember Coda being $99.

Whatever $62 for 2 awesome apps = steal.

Diet Coda was being a little sluggish logging though.

Yeah Coda has been $99 for years now.

If I download direct now will I be able to download off the Mac App Store later?

Don't think so.

Seemed like an "either-or" scenario from what I read.

App Store version has iCloud if that interests you.

It definitely does....guess I will finally use the App Store on my Macbook when I get home from work tonight.

I just wanted to buy it NOW! Haha

I've been using Reeder for a while and I like it, but I'm frustrated by my inability to manage my feeds(subscribe, unsubscribe, change categories etc.). Is there an app that will let me do that?

scorcho

best suggestion would be to use google reader to manage your subscriptions and import that into Reeder.
