Considering Apple make some fantastic hardware and software, their apps pretty much suck, don't they?

Are all pretty shocking...

GameCenter, Camera, Photos, Maps etc are so so... but generally, I don't understand how they manage to get it so wrong so often, and seemingly make little to no effort to improve them

Engadget haven't written about it yet, so there is no issue according to Apple, I bet

You forgot mail...
It is "functional" but not anything else.

The camera app is super shitty, if you ask me. The more and more they've added on to it the worse it's become. It needs to rethink most of its UI imo. Apart from that and YouTube, the stock apps are fine.

Hmm. I use Evernote instead of Notes and Omnifocus instead of Reminders. Any recommendations for Youtube and Messages replacements?

The UI is pretty outdated but it does it job, I'll never like the UI again after using Android and seeing WM.

Finally got around to reading, or trying to read, the new issue of Edge, and I will not be resubscribing if this is the new app. It is awfull. Instead of reading an article on the whole screen, you are forced to read in an area the size of an iPhone that is centered in the middle of the screen, so far from the edges that it can't be scrolled with your thumbs. It is overly animated, and much slower than the old version since so many animations now need to load. It is such a usability downgrade. Frustrating.

I don't see what's wrong with Messages. Other than I'd really like to have the ability to stop sending a text.

The camera app is functional, that's about it. The HDR mode is nice but takes ages to process and I don't like the way it always stores a duplicate, the image editing options are barely worth having (even having for example the 'Clarity' function from Camera+ would be great). Timer, stabiliser and burst are also missing features that'd be super easy to implement and useful for a lot of people.

Regarding the Messages app, try BiteSMS and you'll see just how awful the stock messages app is. Just the ability to reply from the lock screen or any app alone makes it infinitely better than the stock app.

^Just an fyi, you can disable it saving the original image along with the HDR version, in the settings app. Pretty much the first thing I did.

Chrome browser is kind of useless without the extensions e.g. cant export the article to Read It Later. They should enable a gesture for a popup window where you can choose the destination to export it to

Ah, brilliant - thank you!

And agreed about Chrome, but it's still very early days for it. I'm hoping it's going to be regularly updated and well supported, and love the way it syncs devices. Jailbreak tweaks make it much more useful too.

The only slight letdown is the speed - http://ijailbreaknow.com/apple/speed-test-between-google-chrome-and-safari-app-on-iphone/

Messages is terrible. Try having a group chat in landscape mode. All you can see is the keyboard... fail. I don't even know how the timestamps work in Messages cause it just seems to randomly appear.

I remember paying for Read It Later. I'm surprised Pocket has remained free; it is superb. Arguably in the top 5 of best apps in the store

Yea Pocket is great. I got Instapaper for free at Starbucks and I still use Pocket over it.

Not sure if the development costs are worth it considering there is a fairly good chance Verge readers are probably getting news on their RSS feeds from the website. Why would I download their app? To watch the videos?!

True but plenty of people are always asking for the app on the site and in device homescreens in The Verge forums and elsewhere you can see people with The Verge as a web app on their homescreen.

Does the apple podcast app run like absolute dogshit for anyone else using it with an iPhone 4? Man, how does this pass quality control.

Yes. I don't understand it either. It takes at least a minute and a half before I get control to scroll through my subscribed podcasts. The app otherwise looks decent, but the performance makes it unusable.

Saying those Apple apps suck is a bit over the top. They could be improved sure, but suck? Notes does its job just fine. It isn't meant to be an Evernote type app. Notes is more akin to Windows Notepad. The problem with the YouTube app is that it exists at all. Safari is fine as well (I like Chrome better too, but Safari served me well). Maybe because I never tried sending a group text while in landscape but Messages works fine too. I do agree Reminders in its current form is pretty useless as a todo list. That app does pretty much suck. Wait, what's wrong with the Maps app? I think it works great and am pretty sad Apple is changing it in iOS 6.

It's a dark time for podcasting apps. They fucked up Instacast in a new update again! I don't understand how an app can be so good, then unusable, then good, then unusable again! Argh.

If this doesn't get updated to good again... It's Downcast time.

What I hate about the YouTube app is that the player is discarded when the video ends. That's always great when I waited for an eternity for the video to load because I've got a bad connection and want to view a part (or the whole video) again. Isn't the app supposed to cache videos?

I could've sworn you can replay the last video you watched without having to reload it, unless you quit the app.

Occasionally it re-loads fast, indicating that it's cached indeed - but not more often than not it takes forever again.

But apart from the performance, I also dislike that the detail page of the video is displayed after it ends instead of the view from where you've originally opened it (e.g. search, history). It kinds feels wrong to me in terms of usability. But that's just a very minor issue for me.

It also appears to automatically play the highest possible rez version of the video, which is particularly shit for my slow connection. And it's not possible to simply copy a link to the video without drafting an email and mucking aout with the link if you want to post it here. Unless I'm missing something.

You should be using Downcast anyway. Go and never look back! ;)

The YouTube app doesn't show all of my subscriptions which is annoying as fuck. If I want to watch anything starting with "t" or later I need to search for it. Garbage.

If you use YouTube a lot, you might as well add a bookmark to the mobile site to your homescreen. It's pretty much a deprecated app that is unlikely to see many improvements. Apple even showed off LTE video downloads using Vimeo instead of YouTube at the new iPad keynote.

Big issue with Downcast is you can't have it auto-rewind the last 5 or 10 seconds of podcast when you hit "play". Instacast's ability to do this is a boon for people like me who listen in their cars via a bluetooth connection. You need to compensate for the lag of the car getting shut off and the "stop" signal getting send to the phone.

Enable restrictions under settings app. Disable YouTube. Use website. Problem solved.

I don't know why people bother with that crappy app.

So what is regarded as the best translator app, txt and voice?
And is their one who works offline?

Also what is the best one for resizing img and uploading them to a service for easy post on GAF/other forums/websites?

Language-specific ones are usually better than all-purpose ones.

Is there any app similar to BoardMemo? The "Lite" version only allows me to have 3 notes and the "Full" version doesn't even exist on the App Store (Canada at least).

All I want is some app that'll keep notes in the form of notifications in notification center so I can see them every time I pull it down. I don't want any locations or due dates to be associated with these notes. I just want them to persist upon entry until I delete them.

Anyone elses Twitter app not working today? It keeps closing down all the time.

Tried turning the phone off and on again, even deleted the app and redownloaded. Just closes after a few seconds of getting an updated feed.

iPhone 4S.

Newsify update is glorious! Mark as read while scrolling, hold to mark as read/star, and other minor tweaks have turned this into easily the best blend of form and function amongst the various RSS readers.

So good!

iPhone 4S.

It's been doing that for me too, but it's been infrequent. iPad 3.

AirVideo got updated for iPad retina display, by the way. Haven't gotten a chance to check it out.

Google bought Sparrow, current app won't be updated anymore.

You can view our public announcement here, but I wanted to reach out directly to make sure you were aware of the news. We will continue to make available our existing products, and we will provide support and critical updates to our users. However, as we’ll be busy with new projects at Google, we do not plan to release new features for the Sparrow apps.

A Google spokesperson also told us:

The Sparrow team has always put their users first by focusing on building a seamlessly simple and intuitive interface for their email client. We look forward to bringing them aboard the Gmail team, where they’ll be working on new projects.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sparrow is way better than the Gmail iOS app, but keep in mind the Gmail one still has push. No reason Sparrow team couldn't just be working on an upgraded Gmail app that would end up on iOS.

Though I guess if you want a good mail app rather than just a gmail app, that sucks.

Sorry if the answer's really obvious, but what's up with Empire's monthly subscription being $1.99 on Newsstand?

Every issue is $4.99 without a subscription, and the monthly subscription is $1.99. The magazine comes out monthly. I ARE CONFUSED.

What are you confused about? They want recurring payments as opposed to one-off's so they incentivize subscriptions over single purchases.
