NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Let me guess: Solaris. Because everywhere else it's typically $330+...and then there's the shipping.

Yes, I'm going by Solaris.

That's disappointing to hear that Punch-Out can't be played with a Framemeister. I have a pretty good Panny plasma that seems to have a great response time when I play PS2/1 games via component. Will I be OK with NES and xrgb? Birthday is tomorrow and hoping I get some cash to finally buy one very soon....

You just jumped from 'what is the cheapest way' and 'what is the most expensive possible option available' within one page ;)

Read the first page of the NT thread before buying. Apart from the issues with the product itself, the time difference between ordering and receiving one of those may be somewhat... flexible.

Didn't know it's the most expensive. I have limited space. Not many other options it seems unless I can some how fit another monitor or a TV in my apartment (which is impossible). As I said, it's not a money issue. Cheapest is relative.

Got my Everdrive today. That was fast!

Unfortunately it doesn't work correctly. So I have to send it back. Shit. I was so excited to finally play with it. :(

Played quite a bit of GI Joe: The Atlantis Factor. Made by Capcom (might be the USA office). I don't think the first GI Joe NES game was made by Capcom but I'm too lazy to check right now.

It takes its cue from Bionic Commando -and it was most likely made in the same engine- with a top-down map system where you can choose your path and what Joe's you take with you for the level. Also like Bionic Commando you can level up your character by collecting items from dead enemies that annoying jump out of them in weird arc and can easily leave the screen. Luckily, if you kill an enemy but don't get the item, you can leave the screen and come back and kill them again and get the item. But on the flip side, enemies infinitely re-spawn but it doesn't reach Ninja Gaiden levels of annoyance. BUT, you can also level up select weapons, for every character... Which means that if you want to level up a specific character's weapon or health, you have to pause, switch to that character, and hopefully grab the item. For every, single, character, and, weapon.

It's an interesting game, kinda' fun, but flawed in quite a few areas. The devs love to have you take a lift or go down in the level only for an enemy or mine to be right there to get a cheap hit. Some bosses are very cheap and seem to require that you tank them. Best example is the very first boss you fight (the sledgehammer dude). He follows you, he only stops when you hit him, but you can't get away in time after hitting him to avoid being hit. There might be a way of doing it but I'll search for an LP later.

It's one of those games where you need a level order to follow like Mega Man. There's certain levels (especially one early on) that can just annihilate you because you're just not leveled up enough. It does seem to have infinite continues and passwords at least.

The first GI Joe game was made by KID, published by Taxan. Interestingly, when you complete one of their prior games (Kickmaster, I think), the ending screen mentions their upcoming GI Joe game. I played GI Joe a bit but didn't enjoy it as much as their other games (Low G Man, Burai Fighter, Kickmaster).

What's wrong with it?

I did two playthroughs of Super C last night and it's surprisingly easy especially if you hold on to the spread gun. I remember needing the extra lives cheat codes as a kid.

Shatterhand on the other hand is a bitch. The sword boss on the elevator boss was a notch harder than everything else up to that point. Then the last stage... super long and wayyy back to the start if you die. I went to bed. Maybe another time. Fantastic game. Best stage selection screen since Mega Man.

Looking for Gun*Nac?
Got a way to play famicom games?
Got 50 or less bucks?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gun-Nac-Nin...t-US-Seller-/231693060525?hash=item35f1fb89ad

Just looked and found one for under 40. Man, Famicom gaming is the way to go. Maybe I should just learn to read Japanese at this point.
I picked it up for $4 in Japan 2 years ago. And yeah the prices had already skyrocketed for the NES version... That's why I knew about it.

What's wrong with it?
When I first turn on the famicom nothing happens at all. Just a blue screen as if there wasn't any cartridge inserted at all. Then if I press Reset I get a green screen while the cartridge LED starts flashing, then garbled graphics.

I found this post on krikzz forum by someone with the exact same problem posted only a few days ago. http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=3445.0

I'm wondering if there's something wrong with a recent batch of PCBs or something.

I do believe there are different "region settings" on a Famicom/NES Everdrive. It could be set to NTSC or vice versa set to PAL (maybe they set it to PAL by default because you are in a PAL region?). I believe you hit the reset button 5 times to change it.

Just make sure you've checked this before you declare it defective.

Hmm alright I'll try this tonight. Although I think a Famicom doesn't have a lockout chip in it anyway right?

So, Gargoyles's Quest 2.

This is a game I've had on my radar for a few months. I've had a saved eBay search set up during that time. Whenever I've checked it - maybe once or twice a week for a few months - there were seemingly always a few copies out there. Usually going for about $60-$65. The last week or so there have hardly been any copies on EBay and the ones that are there are going for $120 (BIN so take it with a grain of salt).

I swear this feels like a racket. If this game shows up on a prominent YT channel in the next week followed by a flood of carts for sale on ebay, I am going to make myself a really nice tin foil hat to start wearing...

I have the Famicom version. There is dialogue but it doesn't really stop you from playing the game. The PAL version is going for 70-100 € so screw that.

Played a bit of Gunnac. It's okay. Pretty mediocre Shmup. It has a solid frame rate that never dips which is quite an achievement but the game is just too easy and doesn't stand out enough. Feels like the kind of Shmup you would introduce to a child to get them used to the genre.

Didn't work. :/

Yeah it's well made and all, but this is also the impression I got when I first played it. Once you get weapon #3 I think, you can basically just stay at the bottom of the screen and keep holding the fire button.

Would you guys have any interest in picking a game every week for all of us to play and discuss? Kind of like an NES/Famicom book club?

I think anything that leads to more discussion about actually playing games in these threads is a great thing.

We could try monthly. I worry that it'll be too lengthy, but at the same time, there are other benefits. I'll come up with a plan for this for October and post it up here soon.

I'm thinking of also budgets for everyone. I don't know if everyone could swing a new retro game every week.

I'm guessing many here have preferences to real carts too.

I agree. I have a decent selection, but there's going to be some that are just going to have to rely on emulation..

Monster Party is a great pick. I only have the US version myself, but I don't think I would require people to play one version or another in this.

Given that the JP version was unreleased it's going to be the US version. I was just thinking about the weird changes from the JP proto they had found and dumped within the past couple of years :)

I would be in once I get my FM from Solaris. I am super busy and haven't had a ton of time to game in the last few months. I am hopeful that I can more easily jump in and out of 8-bit games than current gen stuff, though. I think weekly is a bit much. Monthly would be more my speed. Maybe every two weeks or so?

Tecmo Super Bowl is the one you want. It's got a battery and is overall the fuller experience.

Sweet, I found a copy for $3. I gotta test the battery, but I think it saves.

I was playing it and was having fun, but I hadn't played Tecmo Bowl, so I didn't know which was the better game.

Any of you talented graphics guys? I've got some ideas for banners/image for the One A Month play thing.

Can anyone take these ideas and make them look good? Haha

EDIT: I got someone on this, but if anyone here wants to take a crack, by all means, please do

Heh. Fair enough.

JP Monster Party would be a ROM file of the unreleased JP prototype with all the dubiously illegal references intact or the actual prototype itself. You probably don't want to look for and buy that.

In related news I have a gorgeous CIB copy of Monster Party that I've played to death. I'd love to bust it out again.

I'm in. I'd never even heard of Monster Party until now, I assume it was a US only release. Will order a copy now, it's not too expensive.

We're 100% doing Monster Party to kick things off, so, pick up your copies now. Starting October 1st and going all through the month of October, that will be the featured game.

I like this idea. Most NES games are nice and short so I'll probably give it a shot, never played this one. I can always use more NES platformers in my life

Also count me in the Wai Wai world 2 club. Ordered one from a JP seller on Amazon. Came in box with no manual, but box Is in good shape and cart in excellent. That's one thing I kinda like about ordering JP imports on Amazon, you never know if you'll get something complete, box only, manual in box, or just cart, but it'll always be in great shape. Its like a win win gamble.
