NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

The cheapest copy available on eBay is $27.50. Then the next cheapest is $40 and it only goes up from there, plus, there aren't that many available in general. I would unfortunately say this violates the $30 limit we set and I don't think we can include this as a nomination.

Really? I remember it being super cheap and common, Like <$5 cheap.

What about one of the Wizards & Warriors games? All three are cheap. They also seem to be in that platform action/adventure wheelhouse that our voters tend to like. I have the first two but will admit it's been a while since I played them. Plus, Rare.

I won't officially nominate them myself, though, since I have one in the mix already.

Is there any good reason why Mega Man 5 is like 100+ right now? Seems just a few months ago it was like, half of that.

I feel like MM5 has been around $100 for a while now. I think it's just less common than the other games in the series, (It came out on the last day of 1992) and Mega Man is very popular so there is demand for those titles.

That Pokemon repro for $200...I'm not really up on these things, but is that a case of artificial demand since it's just a repro, or is there an actual rareness to it?

Heck, I'll do it. Wizards & Warriors 1 in particular is a classic in the NES library approaching if not quite reaching a Castlevania or Mega Man, it's the first NES Rare platformer, I would say Rare's first on the NES that was more than just kind of a simple trial-run-programming-the-format game (Slalom). It's the first real showcase for David Wise's wonderful musical sensibilities, it's a fun platformer, it's Nintendo-hard but its unlimited continues suits current video game sensibilities. While Ironsword/W&W2 is largely wonderful and its huge bosses impressive for the time, W&W1 is a bit more straightforward of a game (I recall playing W&W2 a few times, taking the wrong door, and getting trapped in boss room and killed immediately because I hadn't discovered a needed item to survive or beat the boss yet).

Plus it's the only one actually programmed by Rare, rather than Zippo Games/the Pickford Brothers on behalf of Rare on behalf of Acclaim.

I'm actually very curious about seeing more about W&W3 and its more complex game structure, but mostly because every time I try to play it, I get to a point where I'm at a loss as to how to make progress and I know that there are a lot more content and character choices still ahead of me.

Just be prepared in general for Kuros' sword. It's, er... a bit on the stubby side?

It's always been the most expensive MM cart. Back in 2010 when I started my NES collection I think I shelled out $45.

MM1 I got for around $30. MM2/3 for $15. MM4/6 for $25.

That Pokemon repro for $200...I'm not really up on these things, but is that a case of artificial demand since it's just a repro, or is there an actual rareness to it?

I ended up buying it using money I was saving for a Moon Crystal cart that sold out before I had the chance. I asked the seller in a PM and he told me he makes them independently so it's a tad harder to break even once all the parts come together. Said he'd also send me 6 extra repro boxes for the heck of the it.

Doing some further research on romhacking sites, it seems it was most likely made without permission from the translators and that the guy only made around ~20 copies. On the bright side at least, some of the money may be donated to sites that help release prototypes/unreleased games. https://www.instagram.com/p/-E5FNVhyob/

It'll probably end up on other repro sites in the future, though most likely without the box/manual. Should get it in the mail by Friday so I'll post my thoughts/pictures then. If the quality and game itself are good I don't have much of an issue paying that price, the original pirate itself tends to go for a lot, and the seller seemed nice enough.

Mega Man 5 is the only Mega Man cartridge I own (Bought when I was a youngin' back in the early 90s) and the only one I've played from beginning to end.

I still have the manual and box in pretty decent shape, I'm hoping it'll help me retire later in life.

The above is not a serious statement, before you poke fun at me.

I'd prefer Battletoads over any W&W game but that's just me and my vote will just go elsewhere lol What I'm saying is that if an official nomination for one game of the trilogy is made, I'll add it to the list. We just need one more nomination to get rolling.

Can we nominate Famicom version instead or does it need to be affordable on NES as well?

If so, Mighty Final Fight or Snow Bros. for Famicom. Fuck this NES $200 bullshit for a cart thing.

While I wouldn't stop someone from playing a PAL or Famicom version/cart, nominees are NTSC only, also, MFF is still too expensive on Famicom, appearing to average over $30.

That's true. I paid $35 for it at Classic Game Fest in Austin back in 2014. Snow Bros I paid $29 for it back in 2002-03 at a Gamestop. <lost Little Samson in a game of rock paper scissors>

Took 6 weeks, but I finally received the extender cables for the Nes-controller today. Time to play Shatterhand and Guardian Legend!

We still need a fifth game, but I won't wait around for it much longer. If we don't have one by Midnight EST tonight, I'm closing and we're voting on four instead of five. Several people floated suggestions out there (one of the Wizards & Warriors trilogy & to name a couple Battletoads, as much as I'd hate any of those haha) but no one has officially made a nomination.

Here's the current list:

April 2016 Game Club Nominations
Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight
Burai Fighter
Pinball Quest
Wrecking Crew
?

Other games people have mentioned in the past include Startropics and TMNT. I don't mind going forward with 4, it's a fifth less work to set up but it is less to vote on, so, s'up to you guys.

Man, what took so long? Lemme know how they work, maybe I'll put in my order now so they get here before we pick the July game.

I have seriously no idea, but Im glad they finally arrived. Yeah, you should order now if you want them before the july-game lol. Going to report on them later tonight when I get to try them out!

Replaced the 72 pin connector yesterday and the NES is back up and running! It actually doesn't look as bad as I thought it would on my plasma. It's by no means good, but not too bad.

I love the NES controller, so stout and responsive 30 years later.

Alright, we have a full list.

Did you install an after market one or a different OEM one? Pretty easy to do?

I bought it off Amazon so I think it's a replica OEM one. It looks exactly the same but I would doubt it's an official Nintendo one, especially since it was only ~$10. There are many videos/tutorials online to refurb the one you have instead of buying a new one but I had already purchased one so I decided to try it out and it works fine.

It's very easy to do, all you need is a phillips screwdriver. I used this guide as a reference but didn't follow it exactly (I didn't need to do step 5 for example).

If it's got a fairly tight grip on the carts then it's an after market one. I'm thinking of swapping mine out for an OEM one I got on eBay. I want to be able to more easily get games in and out.

Yes, it is pretty tight but I didn't find it difficult to get the carts in or out. I saved my original one so I can always refurb it if I want/need to in the future.

I highly recommend the Blinking Light Win 72pin connector.

There is one on eBay for $80. There is an NES with one in it for $110.

I have them in 3 NES, and it's difficult as hell to get the games out, but they boot up on the first try every time.

I ordered it the Saturday after Black Friday and didn't get the product until around New Year's.

I ordered shells for all four Everdrives I ordered (N8, GB, 64 v3, Mega), and all four came with stickers on them.

Thanks, while I'm sure the holidays jammed up both Krikzz and customs, I think I'm gonna go with StoneAgeGamer.

Got my Blinking Light Win in the mail finally! I suck at anything mechanical so I'll have my friend come over to help me install it.

Blinking Light Win is shockingly easy to put in. I'm pretty n00btastic when it comes to that stuff and even I was able to install it.

Got this is the mail, tonight's entertainment:

The beat em up game with the zaniest enemy knockback distance ever.

Really cool that this was released ten years into the life of the Famicom/NES hardware.

Voted for Street Fighter 2010 because that's the one title in the list I'm very familiar with. Plus I want to see you some of you guys suffer playing it.

It's not bad but the controls really hurt it.

Jerk

Haha jk but I know what you mean. I own the game, it has interesting concepts but goddamn it, I've never finished it because of all the cheap hits and poor control.

Beat Goonies for Famicom yesterday. Short and simple little game (only took a couple sittings to complete) but it's really charming and just solid fun. The game came out just after SMB, but it's really of the era before SMB changed everything. I can also see why Nintendo chose it as Playchoice arcade title later. I used my Ascii stick to play through some of it and it plays really well with a stick! Highly recommended FC game.

So what are people's progression of steps to get a cart to work?

I got Blaster Master online from Gamestop (lol, it was $5 couldn’t pass it up) and it isn't working [edit, by not working I mean I get the blinking light]. I used rubbing alcohol and a q-tip on the pins a couple times. It was pretty dirty but showing clean now. I recently (prior to purchasing this game) replaced my 72 pin connector and all my other carts work first try. Disassemble the cart and Brasso the pins next? Returning it is obviously an option but I’d like to try some options prior to that.

I honestly don't think the controls are flawed. Your character has the ability to handle everything around him - you just have to execute your moves very carefully. It's undoubtedly a hard game to get into, but it's extremely great and fluid once you have a handle on it. Hoping it wins.

If you have the tools to disassemble, I would do that and use an eraser on the pins. Follow that up with a soft cloth and alcohol to remove any eraser residue. If the pins look OK on visual inspection I can't imagine you'd need to use Brasso. I think that's only for the worst kind of corrosion. I've never had to use it.

Ok, thanks. I'll try the eraser first. I don't have a security bit but I am going to try to source one locally so I don't have to wait for shipping.

Voted Wrecking Crew because it's a Nintendo Black Box game I have never played and need a reason. I had Cobra Commander as a kid. Personal opinion... game sucks. lol.

The controls take some getting used to but it doesn't help that you have to deal with enemies who come at you from weird directions. It's very difficult to kill said enemies without taking a hit and when you do take a hit you lose your powerup.

Just got that Pokemon Yellow repro in the mail today, and for the most part it's Gen 2 Pokemon on the NES. I can tell I'm going to have a lot of fun playing through it. The Manual that came with it is just a resized reprint of the original Yellow manual that replaces the in-game pictures & GB system details with the NES which is a nice touch.

I have noticed that your movement is kind of weird, granted you still have perfect control, but it feels like you're randomly switching between walking and running (Gen 3). You can't run indoors, but outside it works a random even in tall grass.

Moves are definitely weaker overall, as Thundershock take 3~4 hits to kill Pidgeys. Daisy Oak uses the FRLG Female Trainer Sprite. Nurse Joy now has the option of either: Heal or Exit, and the Center has two Box Computers on each floor (Multiplayer?).
