New FFXIII Info From 1up.com

Because in one moment it's easy to believe in talking dogs and animals, the ability to do magic, airships using magical power, fluffy-cute magical creatures, big yellow ridable chickens with armor, the ability to wield swords 4x your size, walking/smiling cacti, the ability to control titans (espers/summons/etc) and have them attack your enemies, etc...

But now they want to make a god/titan/esper/summon also change into a motorcycle? OH **** NO THATS JUST TOO MUCH. THERE'S NO WAY THAT MAKES SENSE IN THIS WORLD. THATS DOWNRIGHT HEAD SCRATCHIN I TELL YA.

HOW DARE THEY.

Bravo, good sir.

Who decides who's the real FF fan? You? Amirox maybe?
I'm with the series since # 1 (or 4), played through all of them, liked each and every one of them, have some favourites.
If FF would be rehashing the same theme, the same characters, the same stories, and the same summons looking exactly the same all the time - I wouldn't like it.
It's great that they leave the names, leave basics (Shiva is ice, Ifrit is fire), and radically change the rest (Shiva is just an Ice Princess > Shiva is just an airship > Shiva is a half machine, half Esper). It makes for a great and deep story part, just like in FFXII, when Espers were the ones who defied the God, and in fact, every Esper in FFXII is named after some demon. I'm sure FFXIII will also show you why espers are turned into machines, I can already think of couple amazing scenarios.
For example. We know that Lightning wants to destroy the crystal, so she's against magick. What if, similiary to nethicite in FFXII, Espers in FFXIII are human creation? Would do for some deep story to me.

The most surprising innovation, however, is that summons are now going to be part mecha and play an expanded role of more than just battle support. "The treatment of summons beasts has changed quite a bit," Toriyama revealed, "The fact that the players can summon will not change, but what happens after that will be something totally different." The example they discussed was Shiva, who can transform into a motorcycle. Toriyama hinted that he thinks "it might be the case" that you can ride it during a fight. Whoa

Square you truly have sinned...

I absolutely cannot wait to see Carbuncle transform into a fat Bejeweled pimp ring for Lightning's pinkie finger. I mean if people are ready to accept ice princess motorcycles, the sky truly is the limit...

My thoughts exactly. Leviathan turning into an Ancient dildo confirmed

Animate objects being turned into "inanimate" ones isn't an uncommon thing in Japanese videogames or anime. Unless you've had your head in the sand when it comes to playing Japanese games, it really isn't all that crazy. It's even happened in the FF series itself already although the circumstances are a bit different.

Also Amorix you do realise that FF7 is just as overthe top as FF:AC. It is just getting silly when you say that "its over the top" but you don't acknowledge the fact that Cloud has a sword that's as big as he is and the main badguy has a sword that is just as long. They fight monster and summon things that shoot power rays down to the earth. Near the beging of the game Cloud rides on his motorcycle to take care of some Shinra soilders. One of your charcters has a effing machingun as an arm.

Now you always complain about FF:AC but how would you have carried the movie out and what action style would you choose for FF:AC that still held true to their powers?

the "real" Final Fantasy fans?

Please... please stop talking directly out of your ass, Tsunami. You're smarter than that. I've seen it. This is very disrespectful and baseless to those of us that have following and supporting this series for many years.

Call me crazy, but a handful of people here are willing to, I dunno, wait to see how this is actually implemented before automatically writing it off. There are uncountable amounts of design ideas from various stories (in games and film) that, broken down to basic descriptions, sound lame and silly, but have actually turned out to be interesting and effective.

I mean, at least they are continuing to form new ideas for a series that is 20 years old with thirteen completely different entries and multiple off-shoots/spin-offs. Lesser series have floundered after three or four.
The idea of Cocoon sounds fantastic. Very Alita-ish. It seems like the main characters will be viewed as antagonists- possibly even being antagonists from a certain perspective. Not to mention that, love him or hate him, Kitase has been in charge of arguably the most memorable, unique FF's ever made.

...but I guess being a supporter of this series for 16 years means I'm not a 'real' fan because I'm willing to accept the possibility that this idea of summons also serving as inanimate objects could actually be interesting. Yeah. That makes sense... -_-

Is being closed-minded the new hip thing these days?
Jesus christ... I feel substantially more stupid just for reading 95% of the ****ing tripe in this thread. I must secretly be a masochist... :(

Non-closeup shots that show a few characters on the screen, probably are.
Didn't IGN confirm the battle footage from the E3 2K5 trailer was real-time?

I've asked him this before and he's never answered it... and he never will because he's got nothin'. :D

I thought this was an early April Fool's joke but I guess Square is serious about it.
Square should consider hiring the director of Versus/DMC3 to handle the cutscenes.

Set a new standard for ridiculousness I say.
I'm all for it though cause I know the characters will be great, and there will be a lot of emotion carrying the game along. I figure if I can believe in the cast then hell maybe I'll deal with summons transforming into whatever.

There are varying degrees of fandom, it just seems silly to argue about it in terms of "Years Supported" or who the "True" fans are. I mean doesn't it really come down personal preference?

To me ice princess motorcycles are retarded, does that make me any less of fan, not really, much to the same degree that support of ice princess motorcycles doesn't make people any less of a fan (it just makes them a little off :D )

Real Final Fantasy fans was to strong a statment, I was more referring to the people coming in here that openly dislike the series or have stopped liking it for a while now. They come in and tell current final fantasy fans how to feel about all this and how weird is.

I know this, its just Shiva. I mean, an important Esper/Summon whatever. Its as if shes being reduced in some way. Its more of a joke than anything (to me)

Probably. Bahamut Zero and Neo Bahamut probably put him up to it :(

You know, how cool would it be if Nomura himself was an optional boss in FFXIII?

His ultimate attack could be expelling thousands of buckles and zippers from his sleeves to cause MASSIVE DAMAGE and inflict the entire party with the new status ailment: "Metro"

i havent played FF12 yet (*gasp* yeah) but do you actually cast a summon and it turns into an airship? really?

mmm....

also, at least -I- have always found Ivalice summons kinda meh.

No. The airships in Ivalice are just named after various summons in the series history. The actual Espers in the game have different names, and don't hilariously transform into silly objects.

Let's say this was what it was about. If that was true, of all the ideas humans had for harvesting the awesome power of a summon they created mechanically, they came up with allowing it to transform into a motorbike after it wreaks havoc on some enemies? That's the type of shit that makes it feel so forced and silly, a thinly-veiled attempt to be "cool". There's not many practical scenarios that aren't ridiculous for this shit.

What I do agree on is that it's early, and maybe for the first time these sort of things will be neat in the perspective of the whole picture. I'm just not expecting anything, especially given the team behind it and what we've seen so far stylistically, conceptually and... shivamotorbikally.

Are you high? You just said you read the thread since you're a masochist. Not only does an extremely similar question have a response FROM ME in this very thread (being about the AC-inspired cutscenes in FFXIII, but just switch it out to "AC" for your liking) but I've also answered it at least fifty other times in these same discussions. Your response, consistently, is "DO YOU JUST HATE IMAGINATION, AMIROX?" or some other bizarre bullshit that has nothing to do with what I said.

"Nomura has gone mad! Shiva turns into a motorcycle :´("

I doubt Nomura designed the summons (he designed the ones in FF7 and 8, but not 10).

According to interviews, the world of FF13 is high-tech but there are two kinds of machines in use: ones created by humans which resemble normal technology, and "weird" machines created by the Crystals which aren't completely understood by humans, and resemble magic. The summons are probably an example of the "weird machines created by the Crystals".

As for why they did it, the theme of FF13's setting is technology+magic combined in unusual ways so they probably wanted that to be reflected in the summons, along with everything else.

Honestly, you believe that? I'm sure myself and others could think of a hundred, in fact, maybe even a thousand, different variations than a motorcycle.

As great as this game is looking, I'm setting my expectations to low to avoid disappointment.

Obviously there are other ways they could've achieved that, but this happens to be the one they chose. I'm not sure how disbelief is warranted.

I guess the only saving grace is that we'll be able to ride Shive in this one har har harrr heeee hawwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Those screens are gorgeous.

I don't like JRPGs and I don't like FF much either.... but in saying that, I have alot riding on this game.

I fully expect this to be where next gen gaming is heading as a whole. FF XIII is the one game that's really made my jaw drop and think to myself, WOW........

..... don't get me wrong, GOW looks incedible. But I felt that was a evolution of where the games last gen were going. FF XIII looks like a revolution (providing that there's no funny business going on), the only other title to make my jaw drop like that thus far has been the most recent magazine shots of LIAR.... the ones with the giant sea serpent just dwarfing everything else on screen!!!

This is where, for better or for worse, my bar for next gen has been set. I really hope that they reach it.... regardless of platform. Even though, either way, I won't be buying this game....ahem.

That water in the Shiva summon looks insane. If that turns out to be real-time water effects, then FFXIII pretty much surpassed Toy Story 1&2.

Anyhow, I'm just excited about FFXIII because Toriyama is freaking awesome so I know the game will have daaaaarn good gameplay. Imagine a main FF title with the replayability and depth that FFX-2 had... :O~~~~

If these kind of transformations turn into unique gameplay mechanics, such as using Shiva to travel around large sections of the world, then it could be a cool idea. But it would be a completely waste if it was just for the sake of showing action sequences during battle like in AC.

Hey, I thought the X team was behind this game?

There's people from both the FFX and FFX-2 teams working on this. Toriyama, the director, directed FFX-2. Kitase, who's just an executive producer now, was the main director of FFX (and FFVII and FFVIII). It's all Production Division 1, anyhow.

Avalon said:

Nah. Game director is Toriyama who did X-2 and FFXII:RW. Music is Unlimited Saga Hamazu, and Kitase is just producing.

It should hopefully have the gameplay of X-2, mixed with the production values and epic-ness of X. Could be cool!

Toriyama said that summons this time would have uses outside battle, although battles would still be their primary use.

Sounds like a further progression of FFXII's summons.

I didn't know. Maybe the gameplay will be good after all.

I assumed that was CGI, I mean, that couldn't possibly be real time..........

..... could it?

Yeah, looks like CG to me. But they can't be going back to FFVII's "use CG each time you summon" in this modern day and age. Maybe it's some event scene or something.

If you take away the water, the Shiva model looks doable, but that water is just too insane.

Agreed. While there wil be some CGI, I assumed that the advent of these new machines meant less reliance on CGI and more in game cut scenes, since the White Engine is supposed to be all things to all people.

The main thing that throws doubt into my mind is the water effect, I have a theory (and brace yourself it's a doozy), that perhaps the reason the water is in there at all is to really as some sort of glorified tech demo.

"Ohhhhh, look what we can do real time, why here's lot of water being thrown about. "

But then again, the water could be a key part part of the FF/summoners game play. I'm not a fan of the series, I really don't know. In short, it's a crack pot theory.

But if it were real time..... man alive. :D

If summons were created by the crystals, then it kinda makes using them by Lightning, a conflict of interests. If she wants to destroy the crystal, why would she use it's powers?
Or it makes for another awesome plot, where Crystal wants to destroy itself.
Yup, potential alone makes it the best FF ever. Final Fantasies always had awesome stories, but none was this awesome. Main heroine to destroy the world - mmmmm...

After seeing what can be done by PhysX and Havok 4 on PS3, I wouldn't say it's out of reach.

Bebpo said:
You sure about that?

Yep.

Interesting that no main director is named there.

Well, FFX was somewhat unique in the way that Tsuchida got a pretty big place in the spotlight for a battle director. So did Nakazato, as field director (the same spot he had on FFX-2). Toriyama was, as you can see, event director, so he's definitely closest to being the "main" one.

IIRC, Kitase really went hands-on with the project though, unusually much so for a producer.
