New FFXIII Info From 1up.com

Sure, it's possible. It wouldn't resemble the PS3 version at all, but it's possible... why not. FFX, FFXI and FFXII are on that generation of systems.

I wonder if future main FF installments are completely out of the question now due solely b/c of Wii's lack of next-gen/360-bit capabilities?

If NCL had created a more powerful system would FFXIII be considered for Wii if PS3 continued to underperform sales-wise? Or will FFXIII, XIV, XV never appear on Wii no matter how well Wii is outselling PS3/X360 in Japam?

FFXIII looks like FFX mixed with FFVII IMO.
If you can respect FFX and FFVII as two different universes, then you certainly should respect FFXIII as one. FFVII seems like 1930s + magicks. FFX seems like ancient times + fantasy. FFXIII seems like year 3000 + magick + crystals + fantasy.

PantherLotus: Again, if that's the sort of thing you find "****ing amazing", there's really no direction for this discussion except disagreement. I find nothing at all redeeming in that shit

Wait, what? How is FFVII 1930s?

The question now is whether or not we agree that they should keep pursuing realism (in the graphics and characterization sense), over say, surrealism, like in FFIX. Did you also not love Vivi or the Chef because they were silly looking and off the wall?

If the Wii totally owns Japan I would think SE to be out of their minds not to at least entertain the idea of bringing a main entry over. I mean Nintendo dumping money in front of their corporate HQ would probably help too.

21 over here. But hey, if disagreeing with you would actually make me younger, then please bash Final Fantasy some more.

Ami, I feel quite offended by how you said, that your standards won't go that low. You have different taste then I do, I respect that, so please respect that as well.

I'm a type of guy that looks for either realism, or fantasy. I don't want my dinosaurs to fly, and I don't want my dragons to walk on two feet.

Wait, what? How is FFVII 1930s?

Capitalism, giant factory, architecture, cars, motorbikes. It just feels that way.

oh I like to add that FF9 is the exception of the recent FFs, as that one felt like a FF to me.

Im outta here!

The example they discussed was Shiva, who can transform into a motorcycle.

Everybody is singing:
GO, GO, POWER RANGERS!!!...

uh? no, it´s final fantasy :D

No problemo, in FFVII summons were weapon and armor accesories.

You didn't like FFVI? It had some great challenges, lots of customization and loads of pseudo non-linear segments... What's not to love?

Chef, ala Quina or whatever? **** that character was stupid. VIVI was neat, though. Although I would not characterize FFIX's direction as 'surreal' ;)

Bah. I was trying to come up with an antonym other than "cartoonish."

IMO the game that has the best looking art since the series has gone 3D is FF8.

FF7 had excellent art up until you leave Midgar, then the art becomes average.

FFX had subpar art overall. The game had some wow scenes like every FF, but everything else IMO was overdone. IMO the character designs in FFX or not appealing at all. The only character design I like is Auron.

The "target demographic" point concerning some of the more recent FF games' stunts is kind of irrelevant. If something in an FF game seems outrageous or a little high-flying, but is used in context and serves a purpose from a gameplay standpoint, then it can be acceptable and doesn't exactly need to speak to one specific demographic. But lately some of the shit they've been including is downright head-scratching - any way you look at it.

VI was awesome, and still the greatest Final Fantasy IMO. It actually felt like a fantasy world, rather than a science fiction novel.

I loved 12's mix of fantasy and medieval, that really was the perfect combination for me.

However, I think I can dig FFXIII. Sure, things sound ridiculous... but as long as they mix these crazy fight scenes with interesting dialog, a well thought out and deep story, and of course, a fun game, I'll go along for the ride.

I'm just excited about the battle system. FFX-2 had a very annoying story, but the battle system was awesome. It was fast, exciting, and had interesting options. If they can take FF12's no random battle style and meld it with FFX-2 style, fast paced combat, I'm sold.

Pffft. I for one felt like Cloud had been thrown a mile to stab me in the heart. Fans of FF can't agree on shit. However, I think someone else puts it better than I have:

Because in one moment it's easy to believe in talking dogs and animals, the ability to do magic, airships using magical power, fluffy-cute magical creatures, big yellow ridable chickens with armor, the ability to wield swords 4x your size, walking/smiling cacti, the ability to control titans (espers/summons/etc) and have them attack your enemies, etc...

But now they want to make a god/titan/esper/summon also change into a motorcycle? OH **** NO THATS JUST TOO MUCH. THERE'S NO WAY THAT MAKES SENSE IN THIS WORLD. THATS DOWNRIGHT HEAD SCRATCHIN I TELL YA.

HOW DARE THEY.

It's been a decade since FFVII. since then, there really hasnt been a FF to defy what FF is. I'd rather SE take a risk in moving the series in a different direction.

that said, i do have my concerns about what this "new direction" entails

The story and battle system will be real clinchers for me as well. The battle system in X-2 IMO is the perfect evolution of the ATB system, so I'm really excited to see how it's going to further evolve.

Yea, I just hope that they can somehow eliminate random battles. I'd love for all battles to take place in the field.

Gameplay is your last priority?

Wow, another Final Fantasy thread gone to ruins. Who'da thunk.

Anyway, I will say Shiva turning into a motorcycle just sounds absolutely ridiculous. And that picture Dragona posted isn't helping matters any.

I'm willing to make leeway on the fact that Square might still be able to incorporate it into the gameworld in a manner that doesn't cause me to break down in laughter, but the premise just seems to utterly illogical that I find it difficult to believe.

The problem here is how logical something is within context of the world the game/story/movie/novel/whatever takes place in.

A world protrayed at the getgo as a placed where magic is an everyday affair would not be viewed as ridiculous if a character hurled a magically crafted fireball at another, whereas in a world like ours, such an event would either require careful explanation and integration by the author, or it just comes off as a weak, and/or a deus ex machina.

The problem here is that the idea of Shiva transforming into a motorcycle seems ridiculous given the context of Final Fantasy games as we know it. They've had techworld FFs before, but nothing of this sort had been brought up in them. In which case we have to judge it as ridiculous unless they implement it in such a way that does not look ridiculous. (Making the espers inherently mechanical might work. I dunno.)

Every single FF game has had "mecha" in them. Jokes on you I guess.

I think what he means is they're "over-meching" this one. :)

For instance, Final Fantasy VI had mechs, but it also had a lot of castles, knights, small midieval style towns, and your everyday chocobos.

This one looks like it's being made by the creators of the Animatrix or something.

EverSoTrendy said:
I'm sorry that doesn't sound to good. Mecha in my FF games. How about no.

Totally. Final Fantasy is supposed to be about magic, and be in a classical setting. I mean Fantasy. I was playing Final Fantasy 6, and as soon as I saw Vicks and Wedge and Terra riding in those mechs, I knew that the game just wasn't for me. I put it away, and really, I couldn't be happier.

Pssh, mechs in my Final Fantasy. What a joke.

Like me, I'm trying to withold judgements, but then the AC -> XIII reference began to reinforce those doubts. Next thing you know, I'm seriously harboring ideas that this was concieved as a means to supply cool cinema subjects first, gameplay second. The ball's in their court to validate this mechanic, as this queasiness I got about this is rather reliable.

Wow. There are people here who actually want mechamons. *smh*

What request? ITT, we're discussing the 'new' info that we have for FFXIII. If you don't like the comments it is getting, feel free to leave the thread. As usual, whining about negativity does not really contribute to a conversation. But if you're crying about it, blame SquareEnix not us.

Eh. Looks like true Final Fantasy has finally finished. FFXII and its new battle system does the series no good - and this? Sounds like poop. Action RPGs not Final Fantasy, get it away.

I've always thought they should just combine all the different summoning facets into one system...

each summon IMO should be able to be summoned as a single major attack; field freezes, animation plays out... or summoned as a major force to replace the party in a temporary fashion; the summon gets move, attack, special commands and finally summoned in a minor form, akin to the way FFXI summoners work; i.e. as a pet for the summoner.

Combine it with a junctioning system and you get a tremendous amount of depth to it.

Hell if it was upto me, I'd even throw in a materia system; orbs that you can junction with weapons, armor, special items/summons in order to grant different properties or stat bonuses depending on the orb.
