new MGS3: Subsistence details

I understand this sentence, but I don't get what you are implying.

In Snake Eater there was no reticle in the 3rd person mode, and you couldn't move while firing in first person mode (IIRC for the most part - there might have been something about the laying in the grass 1st person view that I missed since you can actually move while crawling on your stomach in the grass.). You had to pretty much just stand still, facing one direction (with a 360 degree pan) + fire. Of course since they did the 3rd person camera change they could change the whole thing in Subsistance and give you a 1st person toggle camera view that allows for movement in first person while firing.

I don't think you have the stealth pegged correctly.

Heh well I'm just going by what I've seen so far, and a lot of guesswork (basically Snake Eater game mechanics with a new camera).

Does anyone know if there is the option to play with the camera in the original style? If so I might as well sell my copy of MGS3 now, since I'm definitely buying this one.

Yes, you can still play with the old camera, you can actually switch between the new 3D camera and the overhead camera in realtime. BTW, you won't need to go into first person to shoot accurately, the Subsistence trailer showed that auto aim had been implemented just like in the normal single player mode of every other MGS title.

How about reading MGS3 saves? Will Subsistance give me my infinity face paint right off the bat or am I going to have to capture that damn snake all over again?

Doubtful considering Substance couldn't read saves from MGS2.

I believe Kojima already confirmed that your save from MGS3 won't transfer over to Subsistence.

ugh...I don't know what to do.

I bought MGS3 ages ago but it's still in the plastic wrap on my EC. Subsistance is tempting but when I really look at the extras, they don't seem worth the $50 price tag. Don't know what to do.

IGN has some detailed impressions

might be spoilers since it says what it's in the trailer :p

The online mode will be able to support up to eight people online with five different modes of play and will have three different military groups to choose from. But instead of showing us some regular battles, Kojima Productions was clearly more interested in creating some cinematic scenes with the troops. In one of the earliest scenes, seven soldiers from the Ocelot unit run along a hallway and then all hide inside their cardboard boxes.

With everyone lying in wait, Naked Snake comes running by and one by one all of the boxes lift up and start following him as if he were the Pied Piper of cardboard. Suddenly, Naked Snake runs ahead, turns a corner and hides inside a box himself. The line of boxes rounds the corner, continues down the hallway and Naked Snake follows after the last one in his own box.

After this we see a few more scenes of groups of eight soldiers going through various maneuvers. There would never be such a large army in a game since that's the maximum amount of people for a game, but it was a pleasure to watch as Naked Snake inspected a group of soldiers as he walked up and down a line of them at attention. Later on, the soldiers paired off and Naked Snake demonstrated some CQC tactics on one before the rest copied him and left four grunts groaning on the ground afterwards.

Once the training was complete we saw various scenes of soldiers gearing up for a fight. Russian soldiers were lining up along a fallen tree and getting ready for a battle. Ocelot soldiers were running and jumping behind Revolver Ocelot across urban rooftops. In the frenzy of soldiers getting into position and reloading their weapons we could see locations that were lifted straight out of Snake Eater as well as a couple of spots that looked to be completely new. After all, where were those buildings that the Ocelot soldiers were scampering along? It's just another question that we know Kojima will refuse to answer until he's ready.

Oddly enough, the video didn't contain any direct explanations of the new modes. Besides deathmatch and team deathmatch modes there are three modes that are unique to Subsistence. These are the Capture, Rescue and Sneaking modes which all revolve around groups fighting to grab a certain item or prevent it from being taken. The Capture pits four against four in a battle to grab hold of an item on the map and hold it for a minimum amount of time where Rescue involves one group trying to move an item from one spot to the other while the other tries to stop them and get it. And as for Sneaking, that's the one vs. seven mode that's been revealed earlier where Naked Snake tries to get into a complex, grab an item, and get out.

But as for the video we didn't see much evidence of this, if at all. The Kojima team was obviously having too much fun setting up different scenes such as one where Naked Snake was caught and seven laser sights were roaming all over his body as all of the other soldiers had their guns trained on him. And then there was the scene with Naked Snake distracting a group of guards by throwing down a girly magazine or the encounter where Raikov punched Ocelot square in the crotch. It just had to be seen to be believed and we sincerely hope the trailer gets released soon so that any and all of this will make sense.

But caught up in the goofiness there were still a couple of pieces of information that were thrown in. Nearing the end of the video we see a soldier in the middle of a field of grass as all of the grass begins moving about frantically. It's not from gunshots since there are no direct lines of movement, but something else. The camera flicks over to an infrared mode and we see bodies moving all over the place. The camera flicks back and there are hazy shapes running all through the grass. When we asked about this, the official answer was, "sorry, maybe later." Ah well.

As the action came to a close the theme moved on to shots of the soldiers going through what looked like group calisthenics. Soldiers would all lean to the left and then to the right in unison or shuffle along to some rhythm. As all the journalists in the room were busting up laughing at the absurdity of it all, we almost missed the final shot of Naked Snake holding a flamethrower and glancing at the camera before the trailer cut to black and it was over. And what was that all about? "Sorry, maybe later."

I am very excited for this. Definitely picking it up when it hits. Can't wait to jump online, and this should be a good excuse to play through the game a few more times. :D

This can only work in multi if there is a continually updated and randomized collection of barely softcore porn,
so that each magazine you are tempted with could be new and awesome.

Make it happen Kojima.

does the slim ps2 play ps1 games? i thought i read somewhere that it didnt.

I'm against people buying the slimline for a couple reasons.

1. Some of them had really bad output displays and laser diode problems, resutling in more jaggies and dead lasers.
2. You can't use the HDD, which means you can't backup your save games, install HDDLoader, or use special HDD features supplied with certian games.
3. Playing imports is possible but more difficult to do.

The only good things about the slimline were slightly faster load times, and the smaller size.
However, if you use HDDLoader for the old fat PS2 you not only get faster load times than the slimline you even get less texture popin.

the laser sight effect looks shitty :(

interesting video though. they sure had a lot of fun making the video :p

That montage of action in the middle got me fucking pumped. I swear that I'm going to spontaneously combust when I see the MGS4 trailer.

That trailer was brilliant. Especially the portion with the various soldiers saluting. And Snake with his cigar. :lol Great trailer, can't wait to jump online with this.

The end of the trailer sure made it looks like that.

either that or that its a special effect for VR missions.

edit: just watched it again :D

I think you are right....
unless you can get optical camo for your troops, maybe you have money like in CS and can upgrade your weapons/armour

all I have to say is !

I just thought it was suggesting a bomberman-style option where you can keep playing after you die but maybe you can't actually hurt the players...just taunt them and freak them out.

The ghosts appear in the rescue missions, since you can't spawn in that mode you turn into a ghost and have the ability to haunt other players and can try to screw them up.

Pretty cool idea.

Hmm, that is still pretty cool. Having the grass move around like that could totally screw someone up in a forest level.

Yes it will. If somebody shoots out your radio you will lose the ability to communicate with your teammates, now you'll know how the guards feel.

The part with the ghosts was fucking awesome and creepy, and the AKI style low blow complete with the bell ring.

A lot of asses will get whooped online.

Brilliant.

How about this:

A full-fledged Metal Gear Online on PS3 (& maybe X360), with all the characters and bosses from past metal gears. You'd have to earn them, of course, and they'd have to balance out the advantages. Imagine piloting Metal Gear Ray against a squad of stinger-equipped guys..........drool.....

*releasing in Spring 2009....or never.....

The end of the trailer sure made it looks like that.

There are suppose to be unlockable characters. Imagine how badass of a unit you'd have if they let you use The Boss' Cobra unit. If nothing else, she has to be atleast playable. She's probably the most popular character in the game.

SWEEEEEEET! Too bad there's no making of MGS3 or just some documentary on the entire MGS series. That would be really cool. Also, the price is a little crappy. $30 would have been nice but maybe they want to make this legit. Bring MGS into the online world and make it well known for it's online. I think it could compete right there with SOCOM. And hell, get this one under your belt and who knows how popular online gets for this. It would be a nice idea though to have MGS4 and follow it up with MGS4 "online" and continue to do this. Or just include it in it's initial release. Either way. Can't wait to play this. May just let my friend who borrowed MGS3 from me keep it, and grab this, the bastard. It's worth it though if he plays it. Everyone needs to know it's greatness.

MGS4 will have a built in online model so they won't need to do a re release of it like this. They'd been working on MGO since MGS2, but the engine didn't work right with it so it never really went anywhere. MGS3 was built with MGO in mind so it works out alot better in it. So this is basically a test run for both the new camera and online which are both going to be in MGS4. If MGS4's location turns out to be what most are expecting it to be now (the middle east) it's going to be very well suited for online play.
