New model GBA SP?

man... as suckered as I am --- this is perfect, and'll go along with my Micro real nice :lol

Backwards-compatability with the nice backlighting is awesome - good collectors item in some years.

i was just thinking the other day that a backlit sp would be the ideal portable. i think this is the first time in better than a decade that nintendo has met my needs as a consumer.

This really pisses me off, because IMO, a backlit GBA SP is pretty much the perfect Game Boy. I love the Micro, but it only plays GBA games, and it's more style over function. I want a backlit SP!!

It's two steps short of perfection:
-need headphone port
-where's my classic NES version?!? (alternatively: where's my celebi version?!?)

In any case, I echo your rage.

The SP really is the perfect system. I never had a problem with the light it produced before, but this is obviously a huge improvement. Oh well, I'll stick with my NESP.

I've got to start thinning my Gameboy collection...time to get rid of the old Gameboy Pocket Light.

Thin the collection by getting rid of one of the most unique and least prolific types?

I'm having a really hard time finding any info on this that didn't originate here, all from the same poster.

Just saying, is all.

Well, I called Nintendo about it this morning...

i can't believe they didn't add a headphone port!
It's not a complete redesign, just a slight upgrade to the existing line, probably having to do with the price/availability of the LCD screens.

Well, there ya go then.

Sorry to doubt, just found it odd that no one else seems to have gotten any pics of it.

If it doesn't have a headphone output, it's still not the perfect Game Boy.

Next week: A GBA SP that is side-lit, but has a headphone output!

Later: GBA SP that is backlit and has a headphone output, but delivers mild electric shocks when you press the A button.

To those complaining about this issue, why don't I see a similiar outcry when Nintendo released the SP to replace the original GBA? Isn't that even more deplorable?

they did. i remember tons of complaints. now. when sony released the pstwo.. i heard absolutely nothing..

I agree, the headphone port is quite significant and the SP's adapter dongle, in my experience, lowers the quality of the signal to the headphones. The micro on the other hand, has crystal clear sound through headphones, and it's sadly quite understated.

Is the screen technology in the new SP and the Micro any different from that in the DS? Is there a reason why the new SP seems so much brighter and more vibrant than the DS in that comparison shot?

Three steps (well, two for me because I don't care about the whole nostalgic look). Add a headphone port and integrated Play-Yan and I will make sweet consumer love to Nintendo once more.

I just went to my local EB where a girlfriend works, she told me that soem shipment came in yesterday but they're charging $119.99 which is 20$ more then the other retails are selling the previous version at 99.99$CAD. To anyone who's working at retail here what's your selling price in either US or CAD? thanks,

Holy shit. This is way bigger news than the Micro. That screen looks sweet. I've been playing all my GBA games on the DS, but I'm tempted to grab a new SP just because the form factor is much better for GBA games. Damn you, Nintendo.....

Wow Wyzdom.. Seems everyone is stupid except you... and yet you are the one who was wrong.

Suck it up and eat some crow.

I was surprised by this new as many people are. Also, i just received a new batch of GBASP at the store the day before this thread appeared and they aren't the backlit ones.

And i still think Nintendo is stupid. The GB Micro is stupid and imo it just lost it's only true appeal/advantage (backlit screen) since now the GBASP is having one.

Errr, I don't see what's the fuss here? Isn't the present GBA SP perfectly well-lit and all? You mean that when it's totally dark, games can't be played on the SP?

I don't get it. What's the difference between backlit and frontlit?
Frontlit washes out the colours, backlit doesn't.

Normally, I don't mind Nintendo releading new models. But this one really pisses me off big time. Why? Two reason.

1.) It makes no sense. Its going to take sales away from the new Micro, but elimintating it's most attractive unique feature. I'd much rather have a backlit SP than a super tiny micro.

2.) Don't get me to fucking buy your product if you intent to make it better over and over. I will forgive once, with the Sp replacing the darkboy, and I forgive the micro because it's kind of a unique item, but i wont fucking forgive this.

My '97 Miata has a lot more horsepower, limited slip differential, headrest speakers...all stuff that wasn't in the '92 Miata. Boy, those early adopters must be pissed that Mazda doesn't sell the exact same car year after year after year.

they're not stupid, they know exactly what they're doing which is why they've kept quiet about this

If i had to pick between a micro and a new backlit sp (already being the owner of the regular sp), i would chose the micro.

It's screen is not the only advatage. It's size is. I really, really like the size and my hands have no problem adjusting to it's use.

I still have my original GBA (Red).

I haven't upgrade to GBA SP or NDS. I don't know what to do. Damn Nintendo!!!

GBA SP:

brigher screen
plays GBA games
plays GBC games

OR

NDS:

Has Picto --- chat program. ( <~~~forgot how to spell it)
plays GBA games
plays NDS games
DOES NOT plays GBC games

I may gonna to wait it out next year (after E3 '06) and cuz i have a feeling Nintendo might pull another stunt.

3 Possibilites:

Brighter screen for NDS
NDS sleeker version
GBA Next.

My PS2 3000X doesnt have many features of the PS2 50000. Lets not even start to talk about the 70000

I also believe there will be some sort of DS redesign sometime next year. It's one of the reasons I've been trying to hold out.

Are they releasing one in Black? I might just sell my current Black SP for a new Black SP, making it like the 8th GBA I buy. Lordy.

Edit - Also, don't want to read through the whole thread. Is the packaging any different to indicate the upgrades? How will I know if I'm buying an upgraded SP or not?

It says with new brighter screen on it, I believe.

Unless you really want one now, you'd be smart to wait. As I said before, this screen will almost certainly make it into the DS at some point, and I'd bet on it being more sooner than later.

OOC, why on Earth would they even do this? Did they not realize it has the potential to majorly cut into sales of the Micro? It seems like such an odd choice to make, right before launching Micro. Unless maybe the profit margins on backlit SPs are really high?

Nintendo doesn't seem to be making a whole hell of a lot of sense lately anyhow. >:|

And right after I took the plunge and bought that fuckin' NintenD00DS to play Sigma Star Saga. Thanks you motherfuckers. Nintendo is officially on my shit list for this portable debacle. The NintenD00DS being the third piece of portable hardware I've purchased from these pricks this generation alone.

Release one god damned piece of hardware, and make god damned sure it blows my fucking mind!

Christ, if there were some news of this before hand I would have just held off.

PSP ahoy! And I really hope Sony can make in-roads into the portable market so the stench of Nintendo Abuse of Power™ won't be so suffocating. >:|

Ohhhh, that about seals the deal. I was getting close to getting a Micro, but now I want one of these. I might wait a bit more to see if they'll improve the DS screen, but I don't know how long I'll last after PdP/Dr Mario comes out here.

The DS can't really be classed in the same generation as the GBA, can it?

Considering GBA software is what's keeping this pig afloat, it god damned well is. Screw that third pillar rubbish, it's apparent in the sales charts that the NintenD00DS is the sort of hardware Nintendo should have released from day one. You know - the sort you can see without needing to harness the mighty power of Earth's own sun.

That whole third pillar line was just pre-emptive damage control which translated to, "If you suckers don't buy this. . ."
