Nobody should give a fuck about the pope, catholicism, or religion in general.

Yet here you are, giving a fuck.

I'm an atheist, but your comment is pretty insulting. I don't like football, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist for the people who like it.

All I can think about is how cool it would be if large red banners were unraveled over the Vatican with the cobra command logo. Viral marketing for GI. Joe.

Well, the Catholic Church isn't as top down as you'd think outside of doctrine.

Each Diocese actually has a wide range of independence when it comes to operation.

Also, you're conflating the issue regarding the Cardinals' letter. The Catholic Church is all for Universal Healthcare. They. Love. That. Shit. What they weren't down with was the government sanctioning of contraceptives and abortion. They didn't want "Catholic" (QFE) hospitals being forced to, in their eyes, commit murder.

Which is ridiculous. If you own or operate a hospital you're mandated to follow regulatory law with no exceptions.

Here's hoping this Pope delivers the Catholic church into the 21st century. Hell, I'd settle for the 20th century at this point.

John Stewart did a funny bit on the Catholic Church trying to improve its image with women yet not letting them attain the position of priest, bishop, cardinal or pope within church ranks.

I'm a pretty large believer that the Pope doesn't matter. The Catholic Church is what it is. It's a corrupt organization that protects pedophiles. They take socially conservative stances on major issues including birth control and do so in places where such stances hurt the worst (Africa).

Pope Adrian II (867–872) was married before he took Holy Orders,[8] to a woman called Stephania, and had a daughter. His wife and daughter were still living when he was elected Pope and resided with him in the Lateran Palace. They were murdered by Eleutherius, brother of Anastasius Bibliothecarius, the Church's chief librarian.

Wat.

Like his predecessor Nicholas I, Adrian was forced to submit in temporal affairs to the interference of the emperor Louis II, who placed him under the surveillance of Arsenius, bishop of Orte, his confidential adviser, and Arsenius' nephew Anastasius, the librarian.
Adrian had in his youth married a woman named Stephania, by whom he had a daughter, and both were still living at his election, following which they lived with him in the Lateran Palace. They were carried off and assassinated by Anastasius' brother Eleutherius in 868.

Ah, I geddit. Like they were cleaning up his past or something?

It's amusing and depressing watching all this spectacle over something that should be irrelevant by now.

It's not irrelevant because the Catholic Church is an influential organization around the world. I myself am agnostic, but I realize the importance of the Church both in charity and in spirituality.

Having said that, I have all the faith in the world that the Church will make the wrong decision with regards to a new Pope. None of the 115 men align with my personal views on abortion, social justice, homosexuality, women etc, but there are a few who are acceptable in my view. I just don't believe those men have a fighting chance.

Was eating at a local Hamburger shop when the smoke popped up on the screen.

Don't remember seeing the smoke last time, at least not live. John Paul was the year before I was born.

So, Are they going to come out and say "and the nominees are:" then announce the winner? Does the winner know? Would you even call him a winner? Some people probably view the position as a burden. Hopefully he/she will be more tolerant and less racist than the previous one.

People overblow the "power" of the Pope to change/overturn established Church doctrine.

What's the point of a religion if the goal posts are constantly moved based on the social mores of the time?
