They should introduce him to everyone by shooting him out through one of those stage trapdoors.

People overblow the "power" of the Pope to change/overturn established Church doctrine.

Oh, I agree with you, the Pope has very little power. His power is limited to his position as the Bishop of Rome. But he is the head of the church and set the direction of the Curia. I personally believe the real change in the Church occurs at the local level, however.

He seems pretty progressive in this picture.

I also see they changed the pope garb to be more modern.

Doesn't work like this. There is no "liberal" pope.
Don't be silly. Of course there is. You can choose to be liberal and progressive in terms of interpreting and mandating catholic doctrine, or you can be a hard liner.

Pope John Paul was considered to be relatively liberal, while Ratzinger was considered conservative.

Silly? They both had exactly the same stances on morality- give me concrete examples of where they differed.

What's the point of a religion if the goal posts are constantly moved based on the social mores of the time?

The point of religion is haivng faith in God. Moving the goal posts is how the organizations keeps members from losing that faith enough to stop attending.
