New PS4 Media Player launches today - DLNA, MKV support and more

just tired the media player and its half baked like the xbones.

no subtitle support, no chapter skip support, no aspect ratio. forgot to check to see if it remembers where you left off if you exit the app but im guessing no. format support also is finicky, for instance m4v wont play unless you rename the extension to mp4.

so right now ps4 is almost up to par to the xbone for dlna but neither current gen consoles have an adequate player. hopefully sony updates it quickly to get the missing features in. Microsoft would be smart to do the same, they label their player as a preview so possibly the dash update will have the full featured version.

I have a media server set up as an SMB share, does that mean the PS4 wont find it?

Its a Raspberry Pi setup so I wont be bothering if it means I have to set up DLNA with it.

Hmm, some MP4's worked, but a few I'd created myself won't play - not sure what the problem is there. Those same files used to play perfectly on the PS3.

Ok true dream has come true, I can now SCRUB through a streaming 1080p .mkv file on my quiet PS4 without problems and audio stays in sync !

That is it PS3 you have serviced me very well EVERY SINGLE DAY (seriously use it every day to stream stuff off my home server).

Since June 12, 2008 (Day MGS4 came out).

But now its time for your current gen to take over!

*Packs up PS3*

FINALLY.

Not till they bring a new Buzz and allow me to use my old Singstar discs will my PS3 vacate its position!

App works well, though it's too bad there's no DTS support. I like how easy it is to add and access your favorites.

Neither is the final DLNA 2 version with DRM and metadata support.

Best guess is around October 27 for a full featured version with Playready 3.0 so the Paris game show? Sony relocates its 2015 Gamescom gala to Paris Games Week. 4K Blu-ray and Vidipath (DLNA CVP2) at the same time?

Ok, I've finally got it to work. My external HDD has got 2 partition, a FAT32 one and a EXFAT one, and it looks like the PS4 only find things from the EXFAT partition, and they don't even need to be put inside PHOTO or VIDEO folders.
I tried a HDD with 3 partitions (FAT32, EXFAT and HFS+) and none of them gets recognised.

Working great streaming from my plex server.

So, is it possible to have this app and my Windows 7 PC to stream from without needing to install a seperate program like Plex?

The reason I ask is because I have the Media Streaming turned on in Windows 7 but the PS4 can't see anything.

USB with a few MP4 movies when I plug into the PS4 it comes up with no media..

Edit: had to make a folder on USB called movies now they play. Same as PS3 I think.

Same problem here, not many of mine work at all and the same files work fine on the PS3.

Really?

My Panasonic TV supports MKV and even my old Samsung TV from 2010 does too. And with subtitles. Xbox One supports MKV.

My LG smart TV supports it, too. Even subtitles. PS4 uses 120W of power, so I wouldn't want to use it as media player (and needlessly wear it down in the process).

Isn't it pretty lame that it doesn't support DTS/DTS HD? DD is quite poor for 5.1. I'm sure PS3 could bitstream DTS from an MKV using Playstation Media Server.

Today all these formats should be supported from the start!

both these media players on both consoles are pretty useless. i mean both consoles support blurays just fine but god forbid i try to play those same blurays ripped straight to an MKV container (without touching the actual tracks) through these media players.

all of sudden those same codecs that work just fine when played from disc are now unsupported :|

sticking to Kodi for the time being

Unfortunately PS3 is still the best media player. Not being able to save anything to the HDD is useless.

What's the reason Sony and MS did it this way?

Why is mkv such a popular format?

No limits on the number or format of audio and subtitle tracks. It's also a fairly efficient container, and it's open source so no royalties. It got popular for piracy for all those reasons, particularly for anime since they could go nuts with subtitles and various dubs, and went from there.

Most DVD/BD rippers also now rip to MKV, so it's used a lot for people archiving their collections.

Does Cinavia influence own rips? I remember watching a movie at a friends house at his PS3 and suddenly the audio went away with a warning message about illegal content.

This was the secret megaton Sony had for E3, for me. Wasn't expecting it and bam, out of nowhere. Awesome.

did you have to do anything special? the media player isn't seeing my plex server on my pc. :/

Do you have DLNA enabled on your Plex server?

I'm having a different issue. Everything plays fine through Windows DLNA, but if I try to go through my Plex DLNA I get an error on my PS4 saying the media cannot be played.

Isn't SMB simply a type of file server, rather than having anything specifically to do with media?

Yep its a Windows Network Share. It was probably too much to expect Sony to add support for other network connections outside of DLNA with their first iteration of the app. They are usually fairly slow at this kind of thing, I'll check back with it again in 6-8 months.

So hardcoded subs only? :(. What about exfat support for larger video files?

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
All my files work, even some old AVI files other devices have trouble with, seem good but basic.
Why not include it with firmware thou and why do I have a feeling native support is never happening? also I got a feeling the UI on PS4 can never be changed.

The only use I have for this is to stream music while I am playing a game and I cant even use it because I ripped all my CDs as FLAC and any live phish I ever got was also in flac. I think I have like 1 or 2 albums in MP3 lol. So this is worthless unless I can transcode or something.

I was on occasion plugging my PS4 straight into my TV and my PC into my HDMI receiver and doing that as a workaround for not being able to enjoy music while I play.

tried with a couple of mkv, works ok with subtitles and everything. then i tried some video from gamersyde, like the metal gear trailer (this one). it's mp4 1080p 1gb and the ps4 is struggling to play it. i don't think it's the hardware since my pc can play it fine, could it be some codec problem?

Not at home for 6 hours... can you choose options to live-decode from server, or is it only try to play the file from the PS4 itself as the decoder?

That trailer has a 24 mbps bitrate, which is lower than a good bluray would do, and something the PS3 had no problem playing. So your PS4 should have no problem what so ever playing that, and if does it's a software issue, nothing more :)
