New PS4 Media Player launches today - DLNA, MKV support and more

Neither is the final DLNA 2 version with DRM and metadata support.

Best guess is around October 27 for a full featured version with Playready 3.0 so the Paris game show? Sony relocates its 2015 Gamescom gala to Paris Games Week. 4K Blu-ray and Vidipath (DLNA CVP2) at the same time?

So its safe to say they could have released this half baked POS 8 months ago? I'm happy its finally here but its so bare bones I cant believe it took this long. With that said when its working correctly it streams files way faster than the PS3.

That trailer has a 24 mbps bitrate, which is lower than a good bluray would do, and something the PS3 had no problem playing. So your PS4 should have no problem what so ever playing that, and if does it's a software issue, nothing more :)

yeah i meant from the ps4 side. hope they fix it but i fear they just leave it half baked

tried with a couple of mkv, works ok with subtitles and everything. then i tried some video from gamersyde, like the metal gear trailer (this one). it's mp4 1080p 1gb and the ps4 is struggling to play it. i don't think it's the hardware since my pc can play it fine, could it be some codec problem?
There's some weird issue with some of gamersyde's vids. Even on my pc, certain files from that site stutter like mad when I use GOM player or VLC. I pop these same files into windows media player and it plays like butter. Just weird since the PS4 has native MP4 support (your issue) and all these media players I mentioned play any content you throw at it with aplomb.

Had a quick mess around with it. Connected it to several different media servers around the home and it plays back all the usual video formats no problems but chucks a shit fit if subtitle streams are involved.

You have soft subtitles working? How do you turn them off and on?

the new player is so struggle compared to ps3's. Listed video formats not working properly. The volume on everything is super low. Cant even see pictures of scenes while scrolling threw videos. This is kinda unacceptable considering how much time they've had.

if we had to pick a date where the ps4 has caught up to, streaming device wise I think it's around 2008.
DLNA on a console in 2008 was a big deal. It's 2015 and I have 4 devices on my desk that can do it, plus my TV.

I'm not saying it's pointless, just that they didn't have much incentive this time around to make it a priority.

Just a follow up question from earlier in the thread.

I'm assuming I need to have some form of Media Server program installed and cant rely on Windows 7 Media Streaming alone as I cant see anything on the PS4 using just Windows.

yeah, I have a wdtv from 2009 which supports everything that people are struggling with here. This is totally phoned in.

Yeah, this level is what I've expected at LAUNCH.

Sorted through some of the pointless bs like renaming music folder to music and pulling video into folders named whatever. Mp4s and mp3s are working now, but no luck on mkvs. Any advice?

This is...better than nothing but a damn joke compared to the showtime player on my CFW PS3....PS3 staying in the living room I guess *sigh*

Back when the PS3 got DLNA, there was a REALLY good app for streaming to it, called PS3 Media Server.

It was directly built to transcode files on the fly. However, it's since been abandoned, BUT was picked up as Universal Media Server.

http://www.universalmediaserver.com/

It's updated regularly and better than ever.

I'd been using the PS3 Media server for years. Was having issues streaming certain files on PS4's Media Player, that worked fine on PS3. Just switched up to Universal Media Server and everything works perfectly. THANK YOU!

I uh, can't find any reason to have my PS3 hooked up anymore. Feeling a little happysad to see the old guard go...

Did you enable the 'Enable HDMI Device Link'? Most TV remotes work pretty great with the PS4 (and PS3). My PS3 remote lives in a drawer, because I just use the remote from my TV to control it.

My TV doesn't support it unfortunately. Picture's great, but it's ancient by today's standards. I probably won't upgrade until I can sensibly go 4K, so it might be a while. The media remote is the only reason I use my PS3 as the primary Netflix machine. I'd love to use the PS4. Hard to understand why Sony won't allow the use of the old PS3 remote on their new console when they seem to have no interest in making an alternative.

Once UMS gets a proper PS4 profile playback will get better.

They need to match the actual device's capabilities when deciding what to transcode or not, and just using a generic/ps3 profile isn't going to work in all cases.

Working nearly perfectly for me. Only a couple of vids stutter the whole way through. Not sure why. Audio is fine, but the frames keep juddering. Again, less than a handful of movies, but still a tad annoying. That said, since my PS3 stopped playing Blu-rays, my PS4 can FINALLY get moved into the living room since I can hook up my USB drive to it and access all of my media!! Some of the best E3 news yet!

Yeah, some are better than others... I have the Plex Server and Universal Media Server set up on my PC...

Last night when trying different movies and just testing how it worked, I had issues playing some files when using Plex. I had zero issues when using Universal Media Server...

Also, movies that played using both media servers, ALWAYS loaded faster using Universal Media Server..

I do want to add I was using the Media Player app to connect to my Plex server and NOT the Plex App since I'm not a paid Plex Member...

Do you have DLNA enabled on your Plex server?

I'm having a different issue. Everything plays fine through Windows DLNA, but if I try to go through my Plex DLNA I get an error on my PS4 saying the media cannot be played.

That was the same exact thing happening to me with Plex... Some videos would say they couldn't be played, but when I used Universal Media Server those same videos worked great...

Is there no way to play all your music at once? You can play all of a specific folder, but not all of a folder with folders within it seems.

I have one too, and it's baffling the amount of people who will sit around waiting and complaining for years for functionality that may or may not come instead of ponying up $50-80 for a superior product that was designed for that purpose.

Is there any way to make is see music/video's on a drive other than C?

I've moved all my "entertainment" stuff to my E drive as I installed Windows on a SSD, but this media player will only seem to look on the C drive.

VLC doesn't use (or at least didn't last I checked) GPU acceleration for video playback, so if your CPU can't handle the bitrate then it will stutter like crazy. I'm going to guess it's the same thing with the current implementation of the media playback on PS4.

It's sort of hit or miss with me so far. MP4s have have the greatest likelyhood of succeeding but it's quite finicky about it's MKVs. Sometimes it won't play audio either on MP4s. Hopefully UMS will release an update/information about what it the ps4 can play and how it likes its files formatted.

Still this is a huge win. /puts ps3 in closet.

Based on my brieft test, the USB video playback seems to work as well as the PS3's, and the latter never supported MKV files.

It's the lack of useful playback options available on the PS3 which I object to, things like thumbnail search, chapters, subtitles, aspect ratio adjustment, specific time search, frame advancing and more.

Lots of files play in the wrong ratio with no way of correcting it and MKV's can't have subtitles enabled. Poor show all round imo.

like spotify/ps music, media player app doesn't work with my harmony remote yet :(

I know. If they just released a BT remote we would be able to mimic that. Sony needs money, aren't peripherals the king of high margin profit generators?

And don't start with me about HDMI-CEC. It doesn't work with my receiver.

Does Cinavia influence own rips? I remember watching a movie at a friends house at his PS3 and suddenly the audio went away with a warning message about illegal content.

Not if you use XBMC or other media centre software without Cinavia.

To be fair, stuff like the WDTV, Popcorn Hour, etc. have always had wider codec/container support than anything else.

That's always been the white whale. Trying to find a box that supports local content that at that level, as well as streaming services like Netflix, etc. And still to this day, it hasn't really happened. Generally Plex/Kodi on a streaming box is the closest to this, but then you still run into either needing a backend that can do realtime transcoding for the former, or your client device needs to at least support the underlying codecs for the latter.

Kind of crazy we're still dealing with this all these years later. At least most recent content has moved to MKV which makes things a bit more stable.

Nope, just showed up straight away.

thanks! just did the old reboot on both the pc and ps4 and plex showed up no problem.

I had to check but yeah DLNA was enabled. I'm guessing its set that way by default.

As for the playback - yeah its hit and miss on mine too. Some say cannot play media while others work fine. Not sure whats up. Theres probably some setting in Plex somewhere that needs to change maybe but I'd have no idea where to begin.

Ah, I haven't tested it so extensively yet. Hopefully they'll add those features at some point.

Can't you just tell your media server which folders to access? Most of them let you when you set the server up on your PC..

like spotify/ps music, media player app doesn't work with my harmony remote yet :(

Harmony remotes were recently updated with PS4 support... Did you reconnect your remote to your PC and add the PS4 to your remote? I don't know if the new update will work as you want, but it may. It still will not power on the PS4, but will power it down...

Here is info on the update

So it seems like some MKV files work and some don't? Not really sure of the reason for this, but ones with AC3 audio seem to work more often than AAC?

Anyone else experiencing this? Are they going to 'patch' / update it to allow it to play more file types?

The non-working files work on VLC, so it's not an issue with the files themselves I don't think.

Edit:

Oh, I had some luck renaming an avi file. It had a filename that ended in ".com" and it wasn't playing. Worked fine when I renamed it ".avi" though.
