New Superman Returns Trailer

I'm reminded of F4 for some reason- this movie looks rather hokey all around. At least we have BB2 to look forward to.

Trailer has me pumped.

Even if it is a shitty movie, it's Superman. And Superman > Batman + Spider-Man combined, so a shitty Superman movie will still be better than Spider-Man and Batman Begins.

:D

Superman III and IV don't exist anymore as Superboy-Prime's punches have removed them from the universe, so don't even try to use that against my argument.

:D

I came into this thread to say:

1.- That trailer looks good, but it didn't excite me like the teaser did.

and

2.- Batman Begins destroys both Spider-Man films.

Looks awesome, even with some of the um ur "issues" we've heard about recently. I'm staying on the bandwagon.

superman works in camp. He's a boyscout that wears brightass blue and red tights for crying out loud. Even the Reeves movies were campy as hell.

borghe and Willco, can you guys please edit your posts to show spoiler tags while you talk about
supes and lois having sex
? I had no idea what you guys were talking about until this was mentioned (and I would have liked to have kept it that way :() but that totally gave it away for me...

Seeing as how that movie came out in what, 1981?, I think the spoiler period for it has long passed.

Well obviously I didn't want them to tag it because I didn't want superman II spoiled for me.

But I was reading their (untagged) conversation about the superman returns spoiler, and had no clue what they were talking about until I read that part, then i knew instantly. I just think it should be added to the tagged part of their posts to prevent it being spoiled for anyone else.

I couldn't wait to see this last year. Now my demand for it is at an absolutley frothing level! Seriously, this is like a dream come true for someone like me, who grew up on the original movies and the Fleischer cartoons.

I feel really bad for those that don't get it, because they never will.

bollocks. That's the 1960's/Donner interpretation of the character.

I think Donner's version works, and hits a chord with people. Even now, it still stands up on its own, as does the sequel to some extent. I don't mind Singer crafting this sequel with Donner's universe in mind, but I do agree that it's not the only way to do the character.

Looks absolutly awful. Another trashy comic book movie. Everything in it screams "cliché!", the story, the characters, the dialog, the action. And the effects are super-cheap. Just like in the awful Spider-Man movies you can tell every CGI shot as such, even Brando's face at the beginning. This movie won't do well on the box office after word of mouth goes around. This is your typical please everyone movie which ends as being a bland rehash of things we've seen a hundred times before.
I suppose the next good comic book movie with decent effects won't come before Cameron's Battle Angel.

That looks awesome as hell.

Notice the head of Jor-El imposed on the crystals in the Fortress? That was nice.

Seems to be closely following Donner's style, and that's a GOOD thing.

One thing that did annoy me was the proportions of Superman's body- His chest is huge but his waist is tiny as hell. You can notice it in a few of the zoomed out shots... It's quite bizarre.

I'm sorta hoping for the next superman after this one Grant Morrison writes for it cause frankly All Star Superman is just ..super awesome.

I don't get it. Everyone was happy that they decided to make a sequel to the Donner version. This plays exactly the same, and now everyone is complaining about the tone?

I think it looks great, especially after the hyperserious superhero flicks of late (X-men, Batman, Spiderman to a lesser extent). Don't get me wrong, I love the movies, but this looks like a nice change of pace.

Oh yeah, another thing. People have said they feel this movie is a disservice to Reeve. Well, thats fine and all, and I have no problem with that statement. But jesus, if its a disservice to Reeve, then its fucking blasphemous to Brando. Shit, the guy is dead, yet here they are using him in the teaser, then using his image in the trailer, and the rumor is hes in the movie through the use of CG and voice manipulation. Now thats fucking shameful.

I disagree... it brings continuity to the movies... I love the idea of seeing Brando in the Fortress...

Brando's image is now in control of his family... so if they feel it is OK, I think it should be used.

It is not like they are placing his face on a porn star... it is being used in a movie that millions of people will love...

When dead Laurence Olivier showed up in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, that pretty much opened the doors for any dead actor to show up in any movie.

Yeah, and Im against it all. Unless the actor in question specifically says "when I die feel free to place me in movies digitally lolz".

I can see where you are coming from, but on the other hand if done well it will hold up.

Not to mention isn't the Brando footage just Superman II footage that was cut when they refused to pay Brando? Which if true should certainly make the Superman II Director's Cut seem a little odd this fall (which reportedly ALSO has the brando footage restored).

I think the trailer is pretty excellent. I'm just worried that the
kid
will ruin it for me. I'm really looking forward to it based on the trailer alone though.

Something about the trailer struck me as "genuine"

I think the film looks great. I'm not a Superman fan/reader but I do love Comicbook movies (good ones anyway) and this one looks like it won't dissapoint :)

It's Superman II footage, that Brando's family has been compensated for so that they can use it. From what I can gather, they have the upmost respect for Brando and his performance, and this is Singer's way of honoring him.

haha honoring him by using his image in a sequel to a movie he thought was ridiculous from the get go. It's more like Singer's way of cashing in on the nostalgia of Superman 78.

no, by using footage HE ALREADY SHOT FOR A SEQUEL, in a different sequel. And make no qualms about it, the ONLY reason Brando wasn't in Supes II was because Salkind was trying to cut budget and didn't want to pay Brando for what was already shot. If Salkind would have ponied up the money, Brando WOULD have been in the "silly little sequel". So I fail to see what the point is.

Really, if they were pulling a Sky Captain , I could see where you guys are coming from. If they were reusing Superman: The Movie footage, I could even see where you guys are coming from. But not on this. Brando shot the footage for a Superman sequel, and the footage is being used in a Superman sequel. His family okayed the use, and are being compensated. this is entirely different from Sky Captain.

and let's face facts, at the end of his career brando would star in anything that people would hire him (and put up with him) for.

While it is undeniably true that Brando would take any paying role near the end, I still hate the posthumous use of actors. Anyways, Im not gonna rant about it anymore.

dude it's footage he shot nearly 30 years ago, so it's still 'his image'.

He didn't shoot the footage for "a" Superman sequel as in any old sequel. He shot it for a movie that was made years ago, and Singer is using it because this movie is all about nostalgia. I'm not saying it's either right or wrong, but the 'honoring Brando' stuff is ridiculous. So his family ok'd it, big whoop.

not if by "honoring" they mean finally making the footage available and his performance finally compensated. ;)

Oh please, Singer could have just as easily gotten a new actor for Jor El.

And he should have. But using Brando will, as stated, help to cash in even more. Im sure there do exist Brando fans who will pay to see this just because hes "in" it.

Oh yeah, Brando fans are the new teen girls demographic. Look out Titanic. :lol

Uh, what? Who compared Superman's box office to Titanic? And sorry, but it wasnt just teeny boppers going to Titanic over and over again. My point is I feel its a cheap way to cash in on a dead guy's legend. Also, wasnt Brando and Superman like Alec Guiness and Star Wars? ie. he grew to hate doing the role?

I'm glad with the direction Singer is taking. The tone is right, IMO

Lois seems to have a case of the Katie Holmes, though

Routh - we'll see

That's STILL the interpretation of the character. The naive boyscout n blue PJs. That hasn't changed.

I don't see him that way at all. How in gods name can he be naive with all that he's dealt with ove rthe years? That makes no sense.

Then you just don't get Superman and thus have no business bashing a Superman movie or the person playing Superman in any thread.

Also, I'm still wondering how Luthor got past the killer polar bear guards at the Fortress of Solitude. :lol

1. You're over-reacting, Brando was always about the money, in his own words, "Acting is an empty and useless profession."
2. He never hated the role- anymore than any other role- he hated the treatment of Donner and the behind-the-scenes money issues. If anything, finally paying out put to rest the legal disputes over that money that haunted his entire life.
