NHL '11 November Thread |OT| The Leafs Have Been Mathematically Eliminated

I've been out of the loop due to not having a decent PC to stream games, and no Centre Ice this year. So I'm really just going off what I get from TSN/Sportsnet/CBC, which isn't much.

oh idk it kinda looks like he was trying to avoid him there. id have to look at a replay but it looks like he barley hit him.

Why are there so many empty seats in Philly? I thought it was the biggest US hockey market, or one of them at least

Where there empty seats tonight? I didnt notice that on tv, and I think the Flyers do sell out most of if not all their games.

I tuned in with one minute to go, they were leading 4-1. First thing I noticed was how quiet the arena was, then looked at all the empty seats.

Mind you, it was nowhere near NYI or ATL bad, but I was expecting a lot more from a big US team leading the Rangers 4-1. Even Ottawa has a better crowd FFS

BAHAHA off Budaj's head

Canucks PP is solid these days

They had a good start + Tavares.
Good starts won't mean much this early in. Look at Columbus. Hell, Phoenix played well throughout 09/10 and never drew that many fans.

You don't really win your fanbase back unless you can prove you can consistently succeed. Unless you're Phoenix, there's no hope there.

That's Columbus and Phoenix. This is New York.
Doesn't matter. We're talking about teams that have been bad for years. A 4-1-2 record is not going to bring people into the stadium, especially when they then lose the following five games. They're going to need sustained success to grab people's attention.

Long Island, actually.
I think he's just referring to NY state which is a better hockey market overall than places like Columbus and Phoenix.

I understand what he's referring to, however Hempstead and Manhattan are 2 seperate worlds

But that doesn't matter if he's referring to the state and not the city.

I guess the thing is that 'you people' are accustomed to "New York" meaning NYC and if you're referring to the state you need to specify "New York state".....yes?

It does matter when talking about hockey.
The Rangers are bad, and have been bad for years. they went on a 7 year streak where they missed the playoffs. They still sold out. THAT'S New York.

The islanders have been just as bad, yet haven't had anything close to adecent attendance in years. That's Hempstead.

2 different places.

you have to live here to understand. All teams fan bases in NY State are not created equal.

HOWEVER, in a few years when the Islanders are better, I expect more people to show up.

Damn, the Blues win another. It's still really early, but it feels amazing to be in first place in the central.

Lindy Ruff sticking his neck out here:

Lindy Ruff was honored for his previous accomplishments on Thursday night when he was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame but the present state of the Buffalo Sabres was clearly on his mind.

Ruff closed out his induction speech with a strong statement and a guarantee that will likely hang over him for the rest of the season.

“When things are tough it’s when the true character has got to come out,” Ruff said, “we are a playoff team, we will make the playoffs.”

The statement was followed by applause from the crowd at the downtown Hyatt that was there to witness Ruff and twelve others get inducted into the Hall.

“You got to dig in, you got to belly up and there’s no quit in us and I’ll guarantee you that part.” Ruff said, “This team will be back and will be back hard. And my goal, and I’ve said it before, is to bring a damn championship to Buffalo.”

Ruff ended his speech with those words and pounded his fist on the podium before walking back to his seat while he was given a standing ovation.

Guess that's better than how hopeless he sounded after the Boston game.

Halak with another shutout .... crazy.
DAMN son.

Depending on who starts for the B's tomorrow night, we might get to see Thomas vs. Halak on Saturday. Epic.

Canucks look like they now have three legitimate scoring lines with the re-vamped third line. Raffi Torres is just on a roll right now.

Canucks with five wins in a row. :) I wonder how long Torres can keep this up. Kesler has four goals in five games, great to see.

In other streak-related news, Sharks shut out in two straight. Haven't seen the games, wonder what's going wrong there.

Dang it Sharks, you guys need to beat the Blues, not lose to them.

Damn the Sharks.

Man, I've picked all of the wrong teams today in our pickem group. I only got the Blue Jackets right and possibly Tampa if they win.

Detroit better win tomorrow for 3 straight, but I have to stream the game because it is on Fox Sport Plus, but I am looking forward to seeing the new Oilers though, as long as they lose.

Halak: 6-1-1/1.72/.932

Vezina bound, book it

edit: actually, 7-1-1/ 1.53 GAA/.940 SV/3 SO
Thomas: 7-0-0/0.72/.977

Makes Halak's stats look pedestrian.

Shark fans have been non-existent lately. They're all just a bunch of Marty Chinns.

I'm not saying otherwise.

Hempstead is not Manhattan. Yes. OK. But New York State, nevertheless, overall, is not Columbus or Phoenix.

The Western Conference is once again performing much better in inter-conference play.

I wonder when that's finally going to turn around.

my man BOB better keep his spot in goal for the Flyers when Michael "5-hole" Leighton recovers from his injury, the future is now, he's about the only thing that can derail our great play right now...

Torres has more goals than Jokinen, Ignila, and Bouwmeester combined!

Torres is tied with Ovechkin, Kessel and Hossa for goals. He's beating out Crosby, Getzlaf, Perry and Morrows.

Career year for sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up 30+ goals this season.

Let's not get crazy. He's putting up points right now, but he's been a pretty streaky player.

Exactly. He put up his career high of 27 on a team that made the Cup Finals. Since Vancouver won't get anywhere near the Finals, you can assume that Torres won't get anywhere near his career high either.

Frustrating, I've only had a chance to catch a couple of Sharks games so far this season while seeing "highlights" here and there from games I've missed.

I am not happy they didn't do anything to their defense in the off-season.

Watching the highlights against the Blues it looks like they're frustrated as well. I hope something lights a torch under their ass and they get back to form.
