Did you guys read the features update EA just
posted on their site today? Here's a quick summary:
Sticks are out. There's no word on whether or not the team will be able to patch them in at a later date, but right now the game was simply not coming together with 12 different players having real time sticks physics. They know this will disappoint a small subsection of fans who liked playing EA's NHL series with hockey sticks, but there are some checks and balances that come with creating an all-new physics engine in the FIFA series and then porting it over to NHL.
As it stands, players will still be able to interact with the puck via the kicking animation, but this means that legitimate goals will probably be few and far between (which is an added level of immersion for New York Rangers fans). Fortunately, EA's new physics engine, which I'm not sure you've heard of, allows players to bowl into the goalie without taking a penalty, so it is possible to knock a player off the puck with a thunderous hit (don't try to poke-check; you'll just get a tripping penalty), then fly into a goalie skates-first Clint Malarchuk style before he can stop the puck from entering the net. Should a goal be scored, Ray Ferraro will note how it's the best goal he's seen in ten years (every time).
Lastly, since hockey sticks won't be in the launch window version of the game (the launch window being NHL 15, 16, and 17), EA has had to cut back on Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) features. Due to the real world soccer physics engine (with Fight Night boxing fight mechanics), players won't be able to play against human nor CPU opponents while connected to the internet. However, if players are disconnected from the internet before starting up HUT, then it will not boot up since it requires an internet connection. Because of these unforseen unfortunate circumstances, EA is offering launch-day players ONE FREE GOLD PREMIUM HUT PACK that will consist entirely of pictures of hockey sticks that you can't actually use. But you can look at them. It'll be like having a neat piece of furniture in Animal Crossing that isn't actually functional.
As a note to their loyal fans who will be playing FIFNAHL 15 on last gen consoles; they're bringing the same great experience as NHL 14. Like, really the same. Very, very similar. Basically they replaced the Season game day calendar with pictures of grandpa porn. EA Sports. It's in the game.
