Yeah Swedish players are very loyal to their organizations. ex Lidstrom, Alfredsson, Zetterberg, Lundqvist, Eriksson etc.
All loyalty, no heart.

Looks like Kassian will be wearing #9 with the Canucks. As if this whole situation wasn't heart-wrenching enough.
Weird choice. Apparently he's worn #54 and #19 in the past. #19 is Naslund obviously and #54 is Volpatti's.... but why'd he have to twist the knife like this? Won't put him on the fast track to popularity, but ah well.

Thanks Nucks-GAF. Will be interesting to see if Ruff doesn't stifle this one. Forwards that come from other organizations haven't exactly been successful here in the past.

He needs to put him on a line with Vanek and let them play. Stop micromanaging his best pure offensive player -- you've provided him with a high quality center now. Let him play his game.

I think Hodgson could impress immediately. He may not put up major points initially, but you'll be impressed by how he battles along the boards and passes the puck, if nothing else. Also his shot... he had NO shot as far as I was concerned last season, but this season he's been picking the top corner when given the chance.

Hmm. Tom Benjamin seems to like the trade. Thats enough for me. Slide me over to "Acceptance", Socreges. Should only be a one whiskey-shot penalty.
Good points, except:

The challenge, I thought, would be to make a good trade. How do you get any real value when you can’t take salary back in the deal? The only type of deal that makes sense is to trade Hodgson for a young, promising player who is a better fit. That isn’t an easy trade to make.
The Canucks had $4.6M to take back and either way they could have done better in the trade by including other pieces, eg draft picks.

You know how he impresses me? By helping craft the Sabres' first true #1 line in five years. That's how.

I have relatively high hopes for this trade lol

Just keep in mind that he's still young, and because of his past troubles, his development is around 2 years back of what it should be. He may be 4 years older than Nugent-Hopkins, but he's only really one more year ahead of him in professional hockey development.

He also needs a lot of work on his face-offs, but most rookies do so that's not going to be a big deal. The downside is that he doesn't have two of the league's best in face-offs to learn from in Malhotra and Kesler.

That might be a bit optimistic. But I think he'll make good use of the responsibility either way.

He'll probably default to being Buffalo's best center at this point. There's Roy, Adam and Ennis up the gut here in Buffalo (at least I think it's Ennis they're using now). It's a pretty barren position on this team, and nobody else has been able to shoulder that load yet.

It has to be him. I watched some videos on him. He look pretty good.

He probably wanted to wear #9 in Buffalo but that's Roy's number.

He should start initially on your third line and move up. Going from sheltered 3rd line minutes on the Canucks to "HE HAS TO BE THE GUY" is a huge leap in responsibility and might hurt him more than it helps. You're better off taking things slow than rushing it.

Also, prerequisite Hodgson viewing.
Especially for Buffalo fans.

Good thing I'm not the coach then haha

My prayer is having him play with people like Ellis won't hurt him.

Yeah I'm not saying he wouldn't be the Sabres #1 centre, but just that calling it a "true #1 line" is a bit optimistic. I'd have him pegged as a #2 centre right now in terms of his abilities, but that's not to say that he couldn't do well with #1 wingers.

Then the team has to find a true #1 this offseason. Hopefully they can move Roy and one or both of the 1st rounders and make it happen.

Conversely, I'd argue that the biggest problem is that there wasn't room for him in Vancouver's top six, forcing him to play those sheltered 3rd line minutes. Give him a couple of games and he should be centering your 2nd line, if not your 1st. He's at the point in his playing career where he needs play time to grow further. Hodgson's not a true #1 center yet, of course, but he makes things happen, has a killer shot and will score clutch goals. Your team will be immediately better for having him in a central role.

I think we should start Kassian right with the Sedins, same way we did it with Bitz, to really showcase him and see what he can do with awesome support. I don't see why Buffalo shouldn't do the same with Hodgson :p

Agreed. He should spend the next few games bouncing between the first and second lines. No point burying him on either of the bottom lines.

Devil's advocate: what if Columbus fires management this offseason (as Nash wants) and drafts Grigorenko first overall, giving Nash the #1 centre he's lacked his whole career.

Does he stay in Columbus?
The only way Columbus doesn't take Yakupov is if they lose the lottery. Yakupov is supposedly head and shoulders above all the other players, and the only one as of right now that could be playing in the NHL. Sucks to hear about Beliveau, hopefully he recovers soon....tonight is a good tank game if they lose, although I'd like to see Geoffrion score one.

Hope you're happy with Gaustad, Nashville. You've broken Ryan Miller's heart:

"It was a pretty tough day," Miller said after practice in Anaheim Ice. "I’m not going to lie. I’m not real happy about the way it all turned out. But that’s the business of hockey.

"Like I’ve said, we don’t make those decisions. That’s more proof because if I had any more influence Paul would still be here. I appreciate the way he plays. He’s been one of my best friends for a long time there. Obviously, that’s going to continue, but it was nice to have him as a teammate and have those other intangibles."

"He does the things that are not easy to do every night," Miller said of Gaustad. "It’s just too important for a hockey team, and it is a little frustrating in that regard.

"Personally, he’s a close friend, and also I think he’s a big part of the team. No matter the way you view hockey, you have to understand how important players like Paul can be and how long it takes to develop a guy that plays that way at such a high level. Winning those faceoffs is not easy. Killing those penalties is not easy. Not a lot of guys are willing to do that job ever night, and he was."

Read this in Elliot Friedman's "30 Thoughts" article and figured Nucks fan's would be interesed:

6. I'll admit to a man-crush with Cody Hodgson's game, so I'm not the best person to properly evaluate the Vancouver/Buffalo trade. That, and I haven't seen a ton of Zack Kassian. But contacted several NHL types to ask their thoughts, I was amazed by the wildly divergent opinion. There was no consensus. For everyone who liked Hodgson, there was someone who questioned whether he really is a top-six forward. For everyone who said that Kassian's got Milan Lucic written all over him, there was someone who said he's not in Lucic's league. It's going to be fascinating to see how this turns out.

7. There was real surprise Buffalo dealt Kassian. Not so much for Hodgson -- no room for him to play centre in Vancouver's lineup. While Canucks GM Mike Gillis wouldn't confirm Hodgson asked for a trade, several other teams were under the impression he had done so -- recently. Hodgson sounded shocked in his interviews, though.

That's temporary relief though. Unless they could force Ballard into retirement they'd have to throw the dice at some other contract. I agree that some picks or something would make sense. But I also buy into Tom's evaluation of Hodgson, so...

I won't be able to watch Van-Phx today, can someone please keep an eye on Kassian and let me know how he's doing / how he did and post it here? I am very curious and it would be much appreciated.

I love love love the idea of Hodgson with a pure goal scorer like Vanek, but Ruff seems to always go by seniority. Will be interesting where he starts. Hell, I'd love to see Vanek paired with Hodgson and Leino. That could be a dangerous line if Ville starts looking like he's an NHL player again.

And LOL @ Miller. Looks like the team isn't quite going to cater to him as much as in the past. They got great value for Goose. If he means that much to you, convince him to come back in a couple months.

I actually watched that game/shot live. Was one of the reasons I was so excited to get the guy.

I think my friend (who lives in Malton, same place that I live) hasn't even left his house yet. He's going to be so fucking late. He has the tickets for tonight's Leafs-Panthers game.

It takes around an hour and twenty minutes just to get to Union station from where we live... Ugh.

That's not what he meant, though. And room will always be made in the offseason. So I still think he was offpoint there.

I’m probably only noticing this because I look up at the magnet schedule on my desk at work multiple times a day, and I’m sure that many teams have a similar road ahead, but the Bruins’ final month of the season looks like quite the gauntlet considering the injuries they’re dealing with. Starting tonight, through the end of the season, there’s only one instance where they have more than one day between games (they have a two day break prior to a four day, three game west coast trip), with four back-to-back weekends thrown into that span for even more fun. In the final week, they play the Rangers, Penguins, Senators and Sabres – could be nuts. The playoff-style schedule basically starts now, so I hope they’re ready to get back into the grind again.

I also hope Rolston gets a nice welcome back from the crowd tonight. He was one of my favorites back in the day.

Just saw Geoffrion on Sportscenter, dude looks like a lot like Darche hopefully he doesn't play like him, and his number is 57 which pretty cool of him.
