Thats good, we need money then to keep Kulie (or move him) but hes an important piece on the third line, eats a lot of tough defensive minutes and upgrade D. I don't know if Phaneuf will want more money but im not inclined to really give him more then 6.5, I dont really know a comparable for him. At the same time though we have no one to replace him so he might have some leverage.

Really glad Lupul and JVR are tied up long term because after seeing what Clarkson got those two would have demanded a lot of cash.
OH CRAP McClement is due for money too next year, got a couple 1st place Selke votes and was a key player on the team, he'll probably ask for a bit more as well.
Bolland expires next year, replace him for cheap with Colborne might be the answer if he asks for a lot of money as well.

He started off on fire, then hit a rut for like 13 games during the season, but picked it up at the end and carried into the playoffs. He just needs a full season of NHL play to get used to the travel and grind. I say he's probably worth around 3-3.5 mil per year, but I'm sure he's looking for 4+ and like a 6 yr deal.

Daniel Cleary is going to remain with the Detroit Red Wings.

A source told MLive.com today that the free agent forward has agreed to a contract that will pay him roughly $2.6 million per season for three years.

The deal could be announced as early as today but the Red Wings have to release a player to get under the 50-man roster limit before they can re-sign Cleary.

Edit: Did I mention that we still need to sign Smith, Andersson, and Nyquist to new RFA contracts? This signing will put us over the 50 contract mark because of the other 3 and that will put us way over the cap, not too mention he takes away spots from Nyquist, Tatar, and Andersson. Holland better have a dang Ace up his sleeve where we are trading a few guys for a solid top 3 defensemen. That is the only way he can redeem himself now, and even then I don't know if he can. Detroit has not agreed with Cleary on a three-year contract that will pay him roughly $2.6 million a season.

The sticking point is the salary cap. They’d like to have Cleary back, but only if they’re able to shed some salary first.

Teams can go 10-percent over the salary cap during the offseason, but that’s something they don’t want to do.

In the meantime, Cleary is free to sign with any other team if he gets the deal he’s looking for.

If they can't move anyone, Cleary is SOL
