NieR: Automata |OT| "I wouldn't expect too much from this game if I were you."

Is there a new thread for this interview?

The man sounds depressed.I wish i could give him a hug.

Jesus Christ.

YT is about as cynical and depressed as Hideki anno when he created EoE, but it seems like YT has always been in a constant dark state of mind for a long time now.

Although it gives birth to great ideas, i actually really feel for him because living like that constantly feels like it can be soul crushingly pointless to feel no real hope in life

I have spent an hour traversing in all 3D axis's upon the first time you land on Earth after the tutorial.

Yes its been an hour+.

Umm when i said he sounds depressed i was talking about this:

Maybe "depressed" was a bit too harsh but he sounds like he lost his motivation.I haven't started Automata yet but i loved the first Nier so i also hope he continues to make games.

Nah he's just being real.

FUCK THIS FUCKING GAME!!!! I can't get past the first boss on normal, and get kicked back to the beginning because no save points. I've put in about 3 hours now. I get mauled by
the two bucket digger things
before I can even get to the boss.

And I beat the damn boss in the demo on my first try, so this is some BS. No save point before boss = shitty game design.

And don't tell me to git gud, dammit. I'm an old man!

Just put it on easy or abuse healing. It's not worth tearing your hair out.

View of humanity is pretty represented in his games, but with
the ending of automata
I think his outlook might be more real and uplifting then you would expect.

This game is abusing the elderly. Taro pls. Seriously though just change the difficulty to easy. I died there the first time on normal too but it was because I got cocky and thought I was so good.

Spamming dodge until they stopped moving worked for me.

Never played the first Nier, don't really feel like playing an open world game, and this game looks intriguing. Is it worth the pick up? I dig the fast combat.

So the easy mode is really no slouch. It's not like you'll sleep through the it. Try it out.

Even as someone who has struggled with depression his entire life like i have, reading YT's words are just nihilism embodied, he's like a Japanese modern day Edgar allen poe if he was a video game director

I wouldn't really call it an open world game. There's a limited number of sidequests but not endless collectibles or checklists. You can slam from one plot mission to the next and do side stuff if you ever feel like slowing down a bit.

When I think of open world games, I think of dozens and dozens of shallow tasks to check off on a map. This reminds me more of a proper old schoolers console RPG where you can wander around but you pretty much know what you have to do at any given time.

This is not a typical open world game. You will appreciate the big areas though, coz traversal in this game feels like Sonic on acid and for my taste PG often had to small areas in their games.

Finally got my hands on a copy. Been swamped with KH, Yakuza and Gravity Rush 2 (I've only plyed an hour of GR2!) Going to finally dig in tonight.

Oh, this is going to be awesome

Ok, now a very spoilery question concerning Route B. Don't click if you haven't finished A!!!
Is it possible to keep a steady altitude with the flying machines when you control them? I keep spamming X but they go down after a second or so.

Sounds perfect then! I'll give it a go tonight then. Thanks!

Most of the interview comes across as simply realist, but the part about feeling like he's already accomplished his goal and is just working out of habit is pretty depressing.

I can't get over the fact that you can't remove subtitles for voiced dialogue. Drives me nuts.

And yes, I've tried disabling chips or whatever they're called in the customization menu.

Coming from Bayonetta and DMC4, the combat feels a bit odd with an AI buddy, and the pod shooting is something I need to get used to (I keep forgetting that I can range attack enemies!).

How interesting does the combat get? I'm at the very beginning, just entering the desert, and so far it feels more mushy than Bayo, with a lack of incentive to play well (as opposed to just playing it safe and healing often) that feels odd in contrast to the pure character action games.

I'm aware that comparing this to Bayo is probably approaching it wrong, but stuff like weapon switching and the timed dodges promise a certain depth.

Being able to buy those big swords right at the beginning is hilarious, though. And great animations!

Sprinting around large empty areas reminds me a lot of Platinum stuff Transformers title, though watching 2B is definitely more than entertaining than a robot car.

healing wont help him if hes being 1 shot by getting
trapped between both grinders
, like I did. Nor will putting it on easy I guess (this im not sure).

I only failed and had to restart once, and even if I end up loving the game (which I hope and think I will), I will always look back at that and think its a horrible design choice. There really is no reason at all for the game not having a checkpoint there really, even if you want to puff up your chest and say "git gud". What if your power goes out for example? Welp sucks to be you gotta restart the game. On PC its a Steam+Denuvo game, do we even know what happens if your internet goes out and youre playing? Or if the game simply decides to crash as its been doing for people. Theres a lot of little things that can happen outside of your control.

But even just going by stuff in your control, hey some people are shit. Some people dont have patience to retry stuff, let alone the whole start of the game. Why should they be punished for a design quirk that serves no mechanical purpose? You shouldnt be happy that they are getting frustrated with the game you love, you should be sad that this might prevent them from enjoying the game you love.

Im actually surprised, and disapointed, at the amount of "git gud lol this is our niche game and Taro is a god can do no wrong" responses im seeing in these last few pages. Even Souls fans will say when something is bullshit in those games >_>

It really depends on the chips you use, you can customize how the combat goes to a really good degree. You can get Witch Time (Overclock chip), MGR's Parry (Counter), chips that add a energy wave from your swings (Shock Wave), increase the range of your evade, plus many more that you can experiment with.

The action game moves and controls are there, but it's all tweaked for an RPG so it's not going to directly compare to bayo as an action game. The intro makes it seem like that but the combat will mix it up and after that. There won't be orchestrated waves of enemies all the time.

It can be pretty complex if your looking for that, but its not how the gameplay was designed, it was more about getting in hits and balancing melee with ranged attacks than being a combo simulator like Platinum's other games.

This is a Yoko Taro game and an action RPG with Platinum flair, not a Platinum action game.

I have a lot of items that I have no idea what to do with, different kinds of ore, books, etc. How much of this stuff is safe to sell? I know some things say to just sell it, but I dunno if that the only things I should sell?

Thanks, that sounds good! I like that chip concept and hearing that there's a witch time equivalent is great.

Yeah, I definitely don't need DMC4-type depth in every action game, and having light Platinum combat mixed with a great RPG is something I've wanted for a long time.

If it says to sell it, then it's okay. Anything else is likely for weapon upgrading

Don't sell any of your materials. Sometimes you'll be really tempted when you're in a pinch, but you'll regret it later when you need one more Rusty Fukwuzit for an upgrade and you don't know where to get it.

Got the game on PC, haven't played NieR before. Got it based on how much I love Platinum's other games.

What's this bullshit about the intro though? Did the dumb little bullet hell segment, got to the actual melee combat portion, game told me to heavy attack with Y, and every time I attacked, I was damaged. Game wasn't giving me any other feedback. I have no idea why I was being damaged. Then I died, got taken back to the main menu, and now I have to do the whole bullet hell segment again?

What?

Got this on PC. Played about 5 hours and running around the 2nd area
desert
. Really enjoying this game! It has tremendous atmosphere and music, and the combat feels great! The details of the landscapes look a little dated but nothing too jarring for me.

alright. Definitely tempting, got like 8 books worth 5k each, same with some ores

That's weird. Sounds like a bug. Keep in mind that you can't save until you beat the first segment of the game. Stock up on healing items and lower the difficullty if you need to, to get past the first part.

What?

You need to use evade to not be hit, watch for the signs.

Heavy attack usually means you need to time it and not mash it.

Holy difficulty spike batman! I just got to the point where
the underground opens up after some Goliaths invade the city ruins
and now I'm seeing enemies almost x1.5 my level!

Shit is fucking hard, even on normal. Should I get some weapons from the shops? I've only got the start sword (upgraded to lv3) and two spears so far.

I'm not really praying for much, but I'm hoping they fix the area streaming "crash" bug on PC. The entire screen freezes, but there's sound in the background to indicate that the game is still running. Every time I hit the bug I get to an area where I couldn't save, losing about 15 minutes of play. Had to repeat an particularly boring escort side quest because of that >=(

And now I died during the bullet hell segment because I got hit by like 20 projectiles while I was frozen in place because the game was changing camera perspectives.

The fuck
