Nier: Automata PC performance thread

Alright boys and girls, after hearing a bunch about this game, I impulse bought it. After going through the beginning sequence a few times the game would crash before the first save point, ugh. It seemed to be an issue with my reference RX 480 or its drivers.

I was kind of on the fence and thanks to tax returns, I ordered myself a 1080 Ti, which arrives tomorrow.

So what are the essential tweaks?

So far I've installed FAR and the DualShock 4 button prompts. For FAR, the only changes I've made are setting the bloom and AO to native resolution, and for the in-game settings I turned off anti-aliasing. But the RX 480 still crashed.

With a 1080ti, I'd set GI to "high" (identical to "ultra" and quite a bit faster on NV), Bloom and AO to native, MSAA to off of course, and see at what DSR resolution you can get the game to run at a solid 60 FPS. I'd guess somewhere between 1800p and 2160p (that is, 4k).

Sounds awesome, and there's no dealing with the 30 fps cutscenes, right? (They're all prerendered IIRC)

Should I bother with unlocking the framerate? I have a 144Hz monitor, or is it less of a hassle to just enjoy that real nice IQ at 60 fps?

And hey! Thanks for all the sweet work you do!

Are there still issues with rx 480s?

Main reason i was turned off cause i didnt wanna fiddle with fixes.

also ps4 or i7 4790 + rx480

Yes, white screen crash STILL appears with rx470/480 in the 17.4.4 driver as well.
This is up to Platinum to fix, and we will have to wait a lot in order to fix that, I think, if ever.

Fuck.

At this point in time I'd go with PS4. I can't get past the prologue because of the white screen crash. If you don't mind rolling back your drivers and installing a third party mod, go with PC.

This new 180MB patch is going to break FAR, I'm sure.

Edit: well, its still works, but frame uncapper was broken, and I didn't get consistent pacing anymore :-\

It looks like a new patch has been released on Steam.

Also I tried to enable 2x/4x MSAA to see if they've fixed the pop-in issue.

Nope, it still there.

What does this patch do again, exactly?

From the FAR Steam Community thread:

I'm trying to uncap the frame rate but it's not working for me even after I've toggled the remove FPS cap option.

My dxgi.ini file has these settings:

[Render.FrameRate]
TargetFPS=98.0
LimiterTolerance=0.3
WaitForVBLANK=false
BackBufferCount=-1
PreRenderLimit=-1
PresentationInterval=-1
RefreshRate=98

(Trying to cap at 98 FPS as my monitor is 100Hz)

Here are my log files:

https://pastebin.com/TpVCRF2v
https://pastebin.com/f7m9mq1V

RTSS is disabled and that's the only frame rate modifier on my system so I don't know why the cap is being removed. Also, when trying to toggle off the UseBusyWait, the option just flickers seemingly unmarked. I've manually changed this value to false in the Far.ini file as a result.

You cannot change this stuff in the patched version of the game. I have to spend a while looking for the updated memory addresses. All of those features have disabled themselves instead of crashing your game.
Evertyhing render-related (except for framerate limiter fixes) still works. It's just the camera/HUD stuff that disables itself.

looks like the patch is only for DLC support. No tech support whatsoever. This is after over a month. I'm not expecting much anymore. I guess post release support wasn't in the tiny budget.

The DLC content isn't being forced on to people. It'll be a separate download (around 3.2GB minus Steam's compression).

Rather unfortunate considering that most fixes have been done by the community already and it should be arguably easy for the original devs to just integrate them into the game and push this as a "beta" patch with no QA or something.

Does Shadowplay work with FAR?

I hope the framerate limiter gets updated, but I'll stay in offline mode for a while just in case.

EDIT: I'm assuming it also breaks the free camera mod?

EDIT2: Oh nvm, free camera is part of FAR as well.

Can I avoid any patch related issues by over-writing the patched executable with the original executable?

You can download the previous version of the game by opening Steam's developer console and typing in download_depot 524220 524221 5957457901932186850. The game data will download to Steam\SteamApps\content\app_524220\depot_524221. Unfortunately, there's no progress indicator, however you'll see a "Depot download complete" message in the console once, uh, the depot download is complete.

FAR has been updated to run (mostly) with the patch.

Kaldaien [has NieR:Automata™] 24 minutes ago
I re-released the thing with the stutter fix enabled. I have partial support for framerate unlock, but I don't have memory patterns to scan for all of those features yet. Camera controls were also yanked out.

Everything render-related still works and I think that's what most people use this for :)

Latest version is:

FAR (Fix Automata Resolution) - v 0.5.6 [Patch Fix] - 4/28/17

Edit: I just ran Nier, and FAR auto-updated to the latest version.

Edit 2: @ JaseC - Not sure if you want to add a line in to the OP saying FAR has been updated for the patch? *shrugs* :)

I don't think that's necessary given FAR is the topic of the moment and the FAR-related items in the OP say to download or update it, however I'll cross out "Remove the 60fps cap" and "Enable free-form camera" since the solutions no longer work (for now) but link to the rollback process above for those who are still particularly interested in them.

I cant believe this... :(
And remember folks, this should be considered a GREAT PORT! -.-
It's a shitty broken port. I don't know what those people were smoking.

There is a glimmer of hope, though. The creator of FAR thinks he may have identified something that may be causing the crashes and he's trying to fix it.
Fuck you Platinum Games for releasing broken games and not bothering to even patch them.

Free form camera could be really useful for my second playthrough, I want to get some footage, we'll see how it goes. I'm currently playing Persona, so I'll just avoid opening Steam at all.

nobody said it was a great port...its a good port, period.

Err, yes they did? There are many people, especially in the early pages of the thread calling it that.

And it's hardly a "good port period." really. The person you're quoting is reacting to an issue that makes the game flat out unplayable on certain cards that are less than a year old. Hardly a minor issue.

If this were the usual bullshit Koei Tecmo musou game there wouldn't be nearly as many people going so hard into the paint to defend it.

You can roll back drivers, though. I agree you shouldn't have to, and I understand people who say they refuse to, but it's not completely unplayable.

Can't AMD fix this as well if a previous driver works fine? Doesn't that indicate it's something they changed that made it unplayable?

Nvidia is no stranger to new drivers breaking things, so I guess I just got used to this kind of bullshit.

EDIT: Like, on consoles people had to delete their patches and stop the game from uploading, or the english text becomes fucked (I think this was fixed this week, though). They also shouldn't have to do this, especially on a console, where it's not expected from the user to know how to do this kind of thing, but it's either that or not playing. It's fine if you choose not to play it out of principle, but it's not something that can't be fixed.

I purchased this to support Platinum on PC, however, I regret doing so. In this day and age, I shouldn't have to resort to community fixes for a game to function properly. A month later, and something as basic as rendering the game at the appropriate resolution hasn't been fixed?

It could go either way. Although based on what Kaldaien found out, it's most likely Platinum doing something stupid.
The full screen bug alone is a deal breaker. Luckily FAR and Borderless Gaming exist, but that doesn't elevate this shitty port to good because they are external tools.

In better news, people on Twitter have gotten the attention of Terry Makedon (Director of AMD software strategy + user experience according to his bio). He says this bug has his attention now so hopefully they resolve it because we know Platinum doesn't give a fuck.
