Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

Holy shit, that's almost half of my entire life time, but I don't remember being THAT young when the N64 came out... fffffuuuuuuuuu

Heh, Pilotwings was on the SNES in 1991. N64 was the second iteration youngin'!

There might have been with the 3DS. :(

So several people using the same device have to use the same friend list? It's just dumb.

Portables are generally considered personal devices. It's like how your phone doesn't have multiple numbers and contact lists for other people.

I would assume the thinking is that with a handheld, you are far, far more likely to find users having one each, rather than - as is the case with a home console - sharing one that sits in a lounge. Also, Nintendo's attitude toward the DS line - at least since the DSi on - seems to have been to try and make it a very personal device that you customise and take with you everywhere - having multiple user accounts on it runs counter to that way of thinking.

(and for clarity, I'm not defending the situation, just trying to offer what I think is the reason for it).

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.

Mine should be here sometime this week but I was wondering if anyone has tried an SD card besides the 2GB one it comes with? Was planning on picking up an 8GB for it. I'm hesitant since I know the Wii wasn't able to use larger SD cards (not sure if it's still the case).

Just stuck in a Sandisk Extreme II SD HC 8gb and worked fine, said 3000 Photos left (I don't think it can do anymore)

I love the idea of weekly updates showing videos of all the new releases of the week and stuff... but I wish it was more streamlined, without the need to update the entire firmware.

Well if it was a regular thing like that, they'd push it through SpotPass.

I think the reason is because Nintendo wants to sell one to every person in the family.

if it didn't have a 3D screen, that screen would ALSO be a touch screen (they decided against it since that destroyed the gimmicky 3D illusion).
PR BS. Putting something between your eyes and a 3D screen ruins the illusion no more than putting something between your eyes and any other object.

Would love if they just made the camera work with the stylus or something.
I never liked things like SM64DS's touch screen virtual analog pad for main character control, but I definitely think that would suffice for camera control. Hope to see games taking advantage of that. Not quite as perfect as a second analog stick, but I can see doing it with a thumb without much trouble.

It is hard to measure while looking at a photo, but how big is the displayed picture?
As big as the DS/DS lite screens? Smaller?
3DS bottom screen is almost identical in size to DS/DSL screen, so that should give an idea of the size of the BC DS screens there.

Tried doing so when I played the 3DS a couple of weeks back. Created double-vision for me, from what I remember.

Hopefully some 3DS owning person can verify this for me.

Nintendo already confirmed that the 3DS accepts cards up to 32GB (ie the limit of SDHC) and for that matter the Wii does too (since firmware 4.0).

Hopefully Nintendo patches in SDXC support somewhere down the line.

what's the 3DS crable/base for?

Charging. Nintendo intend you to have it on there whenever it's not being used at home.

Lower battery life on the 3DS is one of the reasons.

I don't know if this has been posted yet but sometime after Iwata's GDC keynote today Hideki Konno is going to have a 3DS session. Don't expect anything to be announced there but it should be interested. Here's the official description:

"For many years Hideki Konno has produced, and been involved with, a number of Nintendos games, including the MARIO KART and NINTENDOGS series. Recently, for the first time in his career, he was assigned the role of overall producer for new Nintendo hardware: the Nintendo 3DS system. Mr. Konno will discuss how he has dealt with the challenges of developing the successor to Nintendo DS while, at the same time, being deeply involved in the software creation process of nintendogs+cats as the games producer."

The title of the session is "Development Process of Nintendo 3DS".

I was replying to a post that said it has been 15 years since the last Pilotwings (which is the N64 one)... I'm aware of the SNES one (but never played it.)

You have to have a dog first before the cat gets one though.

And VOOK, have you tried deleting your Mii and creating a new one to reset your Friends Code default?

When I try and delete it, it comes up with this

^ ah that sucks. Guess you'll have to rock your other 3DS.

Pretty much. You can cover half of the screen with your hand and the 3D effect is not compromised on the top screen.

FUD for days!

I get the same screen too as well.

I can reset the 3DS back to default, and it prompts the recreation of the user account back again, but the Friend Code never change, it remains the same. I knew this coz I initially have taken my face pic to simplify the creation of my Mii to be user with the 3DS user account, but it didn't really represent me. I then proceeded to change the name to the current 3DS Mii name I'm using now, with the current Mii.

Wait, what? You can't just have a cat in +Cats?? So I can't just turn the game on, pick a cat and start doing stuff with it?

:|

Cats are just another Toy for the dogs. lolol

I'm sure that since this example is just another image it's not totally convincing, but blocking part of a 3D image will just... block part of the 3D image. The other parts should still be seen fine.

Here I've taken a sample 3D shot and shown it unmolested on top, but with a hand and stylus intruding on the same image beneath it. Left two images for parallel viewers, right two for cross-eye.

Not *quite* true. True if the 3D is only ever used going *into* the screen, but if the image is such that it comes closer than the plane of the screen, it's going to look a bit unusual if there's an object in realspace apparently blocking the view of something that ought to be in front of it.

Having said that, in most cases it really should be able to be designed around.

Need to figure out how to change the default one then :(

You can edit any Mii in the Mii Studio by highlighting the tile with the Mii you want to change and then hitting the 手直しする button at the bottom-middle.

YEah might just have to edit my Mii to look exactly like my Wii one. I hate the autogenerated one :(

Haha, I know what you mean. Here's a couple of mine that came out before going in and editing it.

Okay played about 2 hours of Monkey Ball....

p20110303064545.jpg

I love my 3D effects but I'm with amirox for once here: I can not play the monkey ball mode in 3D.

Two control options: slide pad and gryo, gryo obviously just won't work in 3D due to you moving the unit, but I find even on the slide pad control I subconsciously move the unit to try to make turns thus throwing the 3D off.

What's even more disappointing is the 3d effects on a nice scale are in the quite nice range. The setting is a pop-up story book with some of the 3d effects best I've played on the system, There is even flying popping out at you effects that actually work too!

The game is loose. Really shouldn't go from playing Ridge racer to Monkey Racing, slip stream / drifting, but the the controls just feel too loose for me, not too mention hit detection for items seem to be a bit a bit too generous(I did not just touch that banana peel)!

Same with fighting, if the games just had some polish, made them feel tighter it could really be a great package.

Edit: just read the interview with sega rep about the game, apparntly each level has a different lay-out if you are playing it using the slide pad or if you are playing it using the Motion sensor

Question: is there an option to transfer your NDS wifi settings/account so you don't lose your Friend Codes when you migrate to the 3DS? Can someone test it, like using the NDS utility for it with the download mode in the 3DS?

This is the game I want to buy at launch. I love the series.

I have a couple of questions: How are the graphics? The screenshots released by Sega looked very bad.

Do you have experience with previous Super Monkey Ball games? Some people feel the controls very loose because they expect to control the ball, but in reality, you are moving the world... most people I know expect controls similar to Marble Blast Ultra. But maybe this is not the case and the controls are indeed loose.
