Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

Off topic, but did you ever explain how you won that 3DS, Vook?

Also, Monkey Ball seems like it would have ever little reading associated with it, so I would go for it if it would end up cheaper.

I played with the 3DS today for about 10mins, and I can give my superficial impressions:

Generally speaking, my mind wasn't blown. It pretty much is what it is. A Nintendo hand-held with acceptable but not stunning graphics, and the addition of the 3-D effect. So it seems to come down to 1. How great is it to have 3D? 2. How good will the games be in any case?

I basically can't comment much on 2., since I don't know what the lineup will look like. I played a racing game for a little bit (I forget the name), and sf4 for the rest. I personally wouldn't have any interest in sf4 just because of the controls. I play street fighter competitively, and wouldn't really want to play on anything other than a stick. The analog thumb circle thing was unusable. The d-pad wasn't terrible, and it's probably possible to get used to it. It's certainly not 360 pad levels of bad. Players who don't mind playing fighting games on a pad might think it's good I guess.

Anyway, as for the 3D. It looks... 3D. It works well. I'm just not sure how much I care.
It's cute that the games look 3D, don't get me wrong. But if I was really getting into a game, I think I'd forget that it's in 3D after a bit.

Anyway, the main problem is that my eyes were getting tired. I played around with the 3D slider a bit, and sometimes would be playing in 2D, and at those times, I kind of felt relieved.. like I could finally relax my eyes and just play the damn game. I really don't see myself wanting to use this thing for tons of gaming.

After I walked out of the store, I was rubbing my eyes for a couple minutes until they readjusted. Maybe this kind of issue varies from person to person? I dunno.

Marty, you're making me kinda regret cancelling my blue 3DS preorder (I had both colors preordered, then cancelled blue once I settled on black)... ffffuuuuuuuu

Not sure if the right thread for this (long impressions incoming), but I was able to play with the 3DS today on the GDC floor. Overall I was pretty impressed with it, I'm definitely leaning towards buying one now. They had almost all of the main launch window games on display (Steel Driver, Street Fighter, RE: Mercenaries, Zelda, Kid Icarus, PilotWings, Dead or Alive, might be missing one).

Street Fighter was actually the most impressive to me. The over-the-shoulder view was awesome and just seems to work. I'm not sure how it would be in competitive play or anything, but it definitely was pretty enjoyable playing against the computer. I actually preferred it to the traditional view, it just had that cool factor to it. It's awesome because when you do a haduken, you can see the cpu actually duck under it and avoid it. I don't really know how to describe it, but it just looks really good. Most people playing it also had very favorable impressions to the over-the-shoulder view. Loading times did seem a bit long, but that's because I was switching in and out of menus a lot.

Steel Driver I only played for 10 minutes and I played a quick demo showing off the gyroscopic features. It was kinda neat to play for the first time, but I think it would quickly get old. For that feature, you basically have to physically turn your body with the 3DS in your hand to turn the sub/camera. I don't know many locations where you would actually be able to do that, but as I said as a feature it's pretty neat. This is the only part of Steel Driver that I got to try, so I can't say much else about the actual game.

Kid Icarus I played for about 10 minutes as well. This one was a little awkward to play, as you use the analog stick with your left hand, the stylus in your right, then holding the 3DS becomes a weird balancing act with your right pinky. It's especially hard because the viewing angle for the 3D effect to work on the 3DS is very narrow. The demo I played was a short flight sequence where you target/shoot the enemies with the stylus and then there was an on-foot section afterward which I didn't really care for. I didn't really play enough of it to get a full impression, but the on-foot part definitely seemed a bit of a drag.

RE Mercenaries looked pretty good and the 3D effect was solid, however the game didn't do much for me. Movement is typical RE control and a bit slow. The default controls are a little weird and don't make much sense, I'm not sure if you can configure them or not. For example, you aim with the right trigger and shoot with Y, instead of doing something you're used to like aim with left and shoot with right. I played a survival type mode (I think) where zombies are constantly coming after you and you have to kill as many as you can.

PilotWings probably had the most noticeable 3D effect (along with SFIV) to me. I don't have much to comment on this one as I didn't play it for too long, but it definitely felt like what you would expect from a PilotWings game.

Zelda was a bit hard to judge because it was in the first dungeon and you couldn't really do much. The graphics weren't too impressive and I couldn't get a good feel for the 3D effect. I didn't put too much time into this one because I moved on to play more of the other games that were available.

Overall I was pretty surprised and impressed by the 3DS. The 3D effect really works and I didn't really get any eye fatigue at all, though the longest I played was probably 15 minutes. The viewing angle is really narrow, however when you play games you don't really tilt or move the device around very much. I couldn't get a feel for the weight of the device at all as they had a heavy security thing attached to all of them. I was impressed by the number of devices they had on display and the number of games as well. I'm definitely interested in getting one now, however I think I'm going to wait until I find a game that's going to make me want to buy it.

I'm going to go back tomorrow and check out Zelda a bit more and maybe play some Dead or Alive. Reggie was also there giving some type of televised interview. They cleared a bit of space for him so you couldn't really meet him or anything though :(.

And black is clearly superior :).

I'm heavily leaning on blue now after seeing both in person. Black just looks so plain and dull when seeing them side by side. That's from looking both open and closed. I could change my mind like I have in the past, but I've never felt this close to deciding on blue. I'll see how itgoes by the end of the week as I see them more, but definitely most likely blue at this point. Here's the other blue I mentioned. The white balance is a bit off but youc an see it's a much nicer blue and it's uniform for the entire body.

Yeah, that is a nice shade of blue. I, too, have been mulling around the colours, and I am thinking of going for the blue. Every handheld system I own is black, with one exception, the original Cobalt GBA SP. When it broke, I got the NES edition. I loved that Cobalt, and I couldn't find a new one around my parts.

Marty, if you could please answer me one more thing: using the blue system, when you look down onto the bottom touch screen and then look back at the top 3d screen, does the colour throw you off at all? I guess it would be better to ask once you have had a chance to try the black system, but maybe you can give a before/after opinion.

Thanks, it is much appreciated.

Heh I still have all three of mine preordered and I won't cancel them until probably the week before release. I'm actually glad I got to see them both in person before release as it helps make the decision easier. I really was 50/50 before and would one day want blue and then another day, black. Hopefully you'll get to see a demo unit before it's released.

Really? You liked the over the shoulder view? It's kinda neat to see visually on the 3D screen but heh ironically, I had trouble judging the spacing from that view. It was hard to tell when someone was jumping in, how close they were compared to the normal view. I found it much harder to time a dragon punch because of that angle. It was somewhat unplayable for me.

RE Mercenaries looked pretty good and the 3D effect was solid, however the game didn't do much for me. Movement is typical RE control and a bit slow. This one did the least for me so far. It was just sorta meh.

Oh that reminded me, ya the view angle would sometimes cause me to see double from just moving the 3DS too much. I'm just not used to having to keep it so steady. If anything, I may turn off the 3D just because of this aspect.

And black is clearly superior :).

Hah no way, blue is =) Black just looked like a generic boring prototype shell compared to the blue one.

Been taking some shots of the Clipper game here in staples center with the 3DS. The 3D effect is pretty prominent in a lot of them. :)

OOhhh, did you manage to get a picture of Griffin dunking? I would love to see that in 3D..

I didn't think it was too bad, but I'm not a competitive player so I don't know if it would work in the long run. Maybe it is a feature that would get old, but it definitely had that wow factor.

Blue looks cool on the outside, but I think it looks dumb that the top half of the inside paneling is black. If that was blue too I would definitely be more interested in it, however the two tone coloring just looks ugly to me.

The two tone isn't a style choice, it's necessary. If it were blue at the top, then it would ruin the effect of pop out images, especially ones at the edge of the screen.

It seems pretty certain that every 3DS colour that is ever launched will include a black top screen backing. Perhaps in future they will release versions where the entire interior is black and only the exterior is coloured. Perhaps that wouldn't seem so ugly.

Now if we were to ignore the fact that the top screen is black...what would your choice be between the two colors?

This is the shade of blue I sorta wish it was. Just like my DS Lite which unfortunately only came out in Japan. Glad I got that as a gift.

Although it's a bit darker than that in person. Depending on the lighting it can almost look black.

I didn't notice anything that stood out but also the stuff I played was mostly top screen heavy and I didn't need the bottom screen much. I played with both blue and black already and nothing jumped out but I'll definitely do some quick panning tomorrow to see if it makes a difference. Heh it wouldn't surprise me if it did just to make things more difficult and then I gotta consider black again =)

Everyone here is going to be black and blue with all the fighting over color.

Nice one. Speaking for myself, I have to make the right choice since I will not be able to afford another one if I change my mind.

I kind of guessed that was the reasoning, and I agree if it was all black on the inside that would definitely be better.

Now the poor guy is going to get a thousand PMs.

Nice going. :(

FinalFantasyDog posted quite a few pages back that he had a spare reserve ticket for the Japanese launch. Nobody cared but me to PM him I guess...

Oh shit! My 3DS got returned to sender because of the battery shipping problem mentioned by CVX a while back.

Oh well. I can wait a few more days...

The blue is nice...but

I bought the purple GCN, always wished I bought the black one.
I bought the blue DSphat, always lusted after the black DSlite and DSi.

I want to just kind of forget about the system once I'm playing a game, and the bright blue interior is anything but neutral.

I also think the black will age better. It probably won't look as old when new models are released, like our poor friend the silver DSphat.

In the end, I'm torn. If the Blue is really THAT nice in person, I may change my mind. I hope I get to try before I buy.

Much appreciated! Thank you for the impressions. :) I almost wish there was a faceplate so I could change the color on a whim.

*LALALALA* I CAN'T HEAR YOU.
:(
Stop pushing me back on the fence.

I'm just glad the blue on the inside is a tad darker than it looked in pictures. It certainly helped make me closer to my decision. I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow to see if it comes off the way I see it.

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
You guys are doing it wrong!

Be like my and buy 3 consoles, then you have two of one colour and one of the other.

Where did you go? We need more images.

Please. All I've got for THREE WEEKS is printing them out, shredding them, dissolving them in water, and then shooting them into my veins.

You've got to give me more.

Please. :(

When you take a 3D image, what kind of file are they stored as? Would it be possible to open it with a 3D photo editor of some kind and separate the two images so they can be posted online and viewed cross-eyed style? Are the snapshots you can take in Pilotwings stored the same way?

Edit: Oh wait, Pilotwings isn't out yet. Durr.

ah, I'm sorry, I searched "photo" but didn't think to search "picture." They're stored as an MPO file huh...

So after some web searches I'm reading that it is possible. It would be cool to see some 3D AR photos sometime.

I just like sexy pictures, that's all.

It really is all I have to go off, since according to the managers in two of my local Gamestops the US won't be getting demo units until after launch, and by then I'll already have my own, so... :(
