Nintendo Direct Feb 13, 2014 Thread | 3DS/Wii U Spring games

I guess E3 then..

Still losing hope for a Dragon Quest game. If VII isn't announced by E3 this year it isn't coming and this truly will be a new dark age of Dragon Quest.

I like how they tried to sell Mario floating away in a bubble as if it's a revolutionary new feature that they totally haven't done before.

Sorry, it's my first Direct, do they do that often?

Since Nintendo doesn't announce anything new for the Wii U I'm starting to believe after Smash Bros. in the fall that's it for the Wii U. Nintendo will just claim it had a full life cycle. Everything that was announced for it was released.

Agreed. Looks like they're going to finish up MK8 and Smash and quietly mothball it.

So at this point I'm thinking it'll go down like this:

February: DK
March: Nothing
April: a e-Shop title and Child of Light
May: Kart
June: Nothing
July: Nothing
August: maybe Bayonetta but I doubt it
September: Again possibly Bayonetta
October: Hyrule Warriors
November: Smash
December: X if we're lucky

With the strong possibility that one of them will be delayed into early 2015. The Direct wasn't terrible it's just amazing that they're fine with the almost 100 day gap of nothing retail coming out on their console. I'm not really disappointed but all I wanted was something to release in-between Dk and Kart.

DK looks great. The music in the trailer was incredible.

X looks bad. The combat looks indentical to Xenoblade and I never thought Xenoblades combat was good. Mechs were alright I guess.

Child of Light looks dreadfully boring and I really dislike the art style.

I mean, Im pretty into what they showed but at the same time most of it was stuff we already knew was coming and most of it still doesnt have a confirmed release date. I feel like at the very least they could have tossed some logos up there of unannounced stuff and said "see you at E3!"

I guess theyre trying to avoid a yarn yoshi scenario of showing something off really soon and then having nothing else to show for a long time, but i really feel like they need something to drum up excitement and ride out the Wii U the best they can

So...let's see if I got this straight: people got hyped like crazy because they were expecting X and Bayonetta 2 info even when logic would say that was not what a Spring releases-focused ND would have.

They got X AND Bayonetta 2.

People call the ND the most disappointing ever.

I don't understand... Please help me understand.

The people who hype the ND are not the same people who come here after the Direct to complain about it. Simple like that.

How does everyone forget this was a Spring only Direct? Seriously you expected Metroid or Zelda out by June?

The people who hype the ND are not the same people who come here after the Direct to complain about it. Simple like that.

Yeah I noticed a lot of the people after the Direct weren't in the thread beforehand.

My thoughts by game (I am sure many people don't agree with me):
Little Mac in Smash - Great art style for the reveal, and he looks fun to play as. Great job.
Mario Golf 3DS - it doesn't appear to have a full RPG mode, but the Mii mode seems to add a lot of meat to the game and I'm very grateful for that.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe - Looks like another Kirby game to me.
Yoshi's New Island - Looked less visually bad than in past assets, but the sounds are terrible. Gyro controls are awful.
Steel Diver: Sub Wars - Well, we knew it was coming. Looks terrible, like an awful sequel to a game that was already bad. I'll play the free version. Also it's not clear Nintendo understands what free to play is. It doesn't mean releasing a demo and then a paid full version. But yeah I'll play the demo.
Rusty's Feeling Good Baseball - The worst part about countries with haggling culture is haggling. It's a gross mode of operation that involves low-information consumers subsidizing high-information consumers. I don't think introducing real money haggling to game business models is a good thing. Also the game did not look good.
Pokemon Battle Trozei - Looked like a totally unremarkable puzzle game, there are 10,000 of these on iOS.
Professor Layton 6 - Looked like Professor Layton 6.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - Looked like Monster Hunter.
Weapon Shop de Omasse - Weird they're bringing it out now, didn't look any good to me.
Inazuma Eleven - I've always been curious about this game and it's great that it's finally getting a North American release.
Treasurenauts - Definitely willing to try it out.
Moon Chronicles - Already own Moon, won't be rebuying.
Shovel Knight - Getting it on PC first time it drops in price to $3.75
1001 Spikes - I didn't really like the original title in the series on XBLIG
Retro City Rampage - Already own it twice on other platforms, it's OK but not great.
Child of Light - Looks excellent, as I said when it was unveiled. Not sure which platform I'd get it on.
DKC: Tropical Freeze - Personally I did not like DKC:R's physics as compared to the original games. I did not feel like it had as good of a sense of momentum. Visually this looked quite good though, really dynamic, and I loved the audio medley.
NES Remix 2 - I am mildly interested in NES Remix, but $15 again is really not worth it to me. I'd buy a disc of NES Remix 1 - 8 for $30. I think I'd also be interested in individual games for $1. But I don't think $15 for the number they've shown quite does it for me.
GBA games on 3DS - I'm an Ambassador so I guess the excitement here is sort of diminished, but yeah there's a lot of GBA games I'd love to rebuy on 3DS.
Mario Kart 8 - Looked like Mario Kart. Koopa kids are cool.
X - Looked... oh man, I'm going to get jumped on for this. I did not think it looked good. The animation and movements looked choppy, the screen was filled with UI, the colours seemed kind of garrish, the rock textures didn't look great. This was kind of a step back compared to previously released media for me.
Bayonetta 2 - Hated what I played of the original, don't like the genre, hate the characters, hate the nonsense dialogue, hate hate hate hate hate the speed acid lounge pop junk music. Bayonetta rubs me the wrong way totally.

Overall I think the amount of content in this Nintendo Direct is pretty good and they're clearly getting a handle on the format. It flowed pretty well from game to game. Personally I wasn't very interested in very much so I didn't get a lot out of it, but they are clearly getting better at doing these things and that bodes well.

It's weird. I am a fan of a lot of what Nintendo does, game-wise. I buy more Nintendo games than any other publisher. But I didn't get much from this personally.

So since Wii U AND 3DS, my expectation is 31 Minute Direct
00:00-05:00 - Please Understand
05:00-20:00 - 3DS Games
20:00-28:00 - Indie Games
28:00-30:00 - DK and Mario Kart, only Wii U retail games shown
30:00-31:00 - Please Understand

I'm honestly disappointed at how almost correct I was.

This, my friends, is exactly why I haven't bought a Wii U yet. This. Exactly this. I might be part of the problem, but I sure as hell am not going to buy a Wii U in the year to come. Might pick up MK8 and DKCTF in 2015.

Ooh, Little Mac. He looks like he'll bring a unique playstyle to Smash. His meter mechanic will probably be on Lucario, too.

MK8 and Donkey Kong look interesting, but I'll only be buying the former. The tracks are the real meat of the game so we'll see how things shake out as release nears.

Bayonetta looks good. Simple, solid action game. As over the top as a Platinum game gets.

That's as strong a lineup as you'll find anywhere across all platforms this year. Things are slowly falling into place for Nintendo.

Uhm sarcasm? 2 retail releases for the first HALF of 2014 :(

Is nintendo really thinking about ditching the wiiu?!

It was disappointing, but at the same time it's all I honestly expected so I'm not too bummed. It's a shame we didn't really see any new games, but I'm sure we'll see new stuff before E3.

DKCTF/Smash Bros/Mario Kart 8 look fantastic, and Bayonetta 2 finally has my interest.

X isn't really my kind of thing, but I do think they should've spliced together a trailer for it instead. Gameplay footage just doesn't do that type of game justice.

Also no one has mentioned it, but does anyone else get a slight Star Fox vibe from the new Steel Diver? :P

I'm not sure what some expected.

I like playing around in the hype, but never go in expecting more than should and I come away from damn near every one of them happy.

New trailers for X and Bayo2, still loving what I'm seeing from DK, Yoshi, and Kirby. The new additions to Mario Golf look interesting. Some of that downloadable stuff is nice.

Spieler Eins I can understand hating everything there. Guy seems to hate everything Nintendo anymore. Even inventive stuff like Remix. But some of you expect too much (in some ways the bare minimum) but expecting more from Nintendo after nearly two decades of this stuff is insane. Really since the advent of 3D Nintendo has changed. Never being able to support their platforms to the expectations of gamers.

Get used to it. The games being made for both their handheld and home console are infinitely more advanced than the games they were making even three years ago. Their handhelds are increasingly more powerful. Somewhere around Vita to 360 level is expected of their next handheld.

This is only going to get worse for their largest titles. Longer and more drawn out between releases.

No Zelda?

:(

E3 my friend. It will be glorious. The hype will be bigger. The stage will be grander. GAF will be down for days.

They got X AND Bayonetta 2.

People call the ND the most disappointing ever.

I don't understand... Please help me understand.

I was hyping it for those exact reasons and I left completely satisfied. I don't know what everybody else was expecting.

Haha. All you people who are disappointed. Why? We got exactly what we were expecting.

We were expecting X, Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and Donkey Kong. And that's exactly what we got plus a few other things.

Are you just mad because we didn't see a big new Wii U title? Looks that way. So Nintendo Directs are only good if we see huge new games? No. This one was good. We got a lot of content and information on games that look really good.

You guys never cease to amaze me.

Never, never jump on a hype train. You're just asking for disappointment if you do.

The good stuff hits you when you least expect it.

That said, I would not expect any pleasant surprises from Nintendo anytime soon. I get the sense that they are tapped out for the moment. Anything truly great that we don't know about by now would be wasted on the WiiU, and the 3DS has already released all of it's big guns, save for Smash.

Well I'm extremely disappointed. Ill buy DC:TF when it drops to 30. Nintendo games hold value for way too long, and in this market, they will lose their ecosystem.

Good Direct overall. Lot of 3DS stuff as expected. X and Bayonetta 2 looked amazing. X is still my most wanted game. Mario Kart 8 looks like a lot of fun. Course layout looks crazy. The Koopa Kids are a nice addition. Child of Light being the only third party title for the Wii U is insanely disappointing but expected.. Not having any dates for games was disappointing as well. Especially for X and Bayonetta 2. Mario Kart 8 should be releasing so much earlier though. I get why they have it at the end of May though. Kids are getting out of school for the summer. What better time to release that game outside of the holidays.

I keep foolishly hoping for a port of Bayonetta 1 to go with the release of Bayonetta 2. I guess I'll have to find a used copy of the 360 version. That's the best one between it and the PS3 right?

I'm confused as to why you were expecting a different combat system where the first trailer for this game made it pretty clear it was going to be like Xenoblade. Some of the reactions around here amaze me.

They wanted it to be a different game more in line with their tastes, which I guess everybody wants that to a point. Thought not sure why they expected it and boy am I glad they were wrong and it is like Xenoblade because I love that game like many others do.

That was just one battle...
Yes, and that battle looked terrible. The initial reveal looked great, so I'm not going to write the game off just yet, but this was just so unexciting. Instead of flashy close combat accompanied by some awesome battle music we got some pew pew pew and QTEs for dummies. I thought things would shake up a bit when he entered the mech but it was the same; barrage the monster from afar and dodge heavily telegraphed attacks. Did they think the west was going to east this up because of guns?

Eh, that Pokemon Puzzle & Dragon jobbie looked pretty cool.

Also that football game was the ugliest game that will launch all generation. That's some sort of achievement.

You were kind of naive if you really expected Zelda U, we won't see any footage of even hear information about it until at least E3 2014. :P

Unless you meant Majora's Mask 3DS, because I was actually convinced they would announce it today...

I Meant Both.. but yeah.. kinda disappointing nothing was mentioned for either system... Theres's Always E3 Right?...right?

You people really have the wrong expectations for NDs. They're as much about the lead-up as the actual stream.

Also, if the original disclaimer states it's about games releasing by the end of spring (ie around mid-June), you shouldn't expect huge new announcements (especially with their holiday lineup likely being announced in its majority at E3 in about 4 months). We got a few new trailers, a couple release dates, and some info on upcoming digital releases. That's really all you can wish for (outside of the odd out-of-left-field announcement).

I guess E3 then..

Don't do that to yourself. Nintendo's last three E3's have been awful.

Here's the thing for anyone getting hyped:

Nintendo's development is fucked. They were slow to adopt HD and new techniques, and their studios are behind the curve. The games they do make are taking forever. With a failing console, you're going to get cheap nostalgia cash-ins like NES Remix. Nintendo isn't going to greenlight a $50 million budget for an epic StarFox reboot with 32 player online battles. Iwata wants conservative software, as seen with every single title on Wii U so far.

Sure, you might get a Zelda reveal at E3, and then you can wait until 2015 to play it. But don't get hyped. Don't expect surprises.
