Nintendo Direct for Kirby Air Riders - 19th August (6am PT // 9am PT // 2pm UK)

Also, a game specific direct implies that it may be coming out sooner than anticipated, they usually only do these about a month before release
So confused by this game. We have a new add on for Kirby coming next weekish and just had Mario Kart. Why is this game even a thing and why is it releasing soon?

I'm betting that Sakurai made a deal with Nintendo that he'd be allowed to use resources to make a sequel to Kirby Air Ride, as well as a Kid Icarus Uprising port/remaster, in exchange for agreeing to direct the next Smash Bros game.

If you look at who's developing Air Riders, it's the same split of developers as Smash Bros usually is. So my completely wild guess is that Sakurai is already working on the next Smash Bros game, but has a few B teams from each studio simultaneously working on Air Riders.

i didn't really understand this game back in the day but ...something new/weird and the guy doing is the reason to tune in.

It's claim to fame back then was one button control. 'A' button only. Wonder if they will drop Kirby Air Ride (GC) after the Direct.

I also have to say that Nintendo fans are eating good. I think since the April Directs we've had like MKW, DKB, Partnet, Indie, and now this. Sure, some dishes were not great, but makes sense.

45 minutes is way too long for one game. Especially a game where you play as Kirby flying a vehicle. No other Nintendo game has ever gotten a title Direct of this length. Nintendo spent less time on Smash Ultimate at e3 2018. Craziness.

Even a Kirby Direct shouldn't be this long, with multiple games announced/ shown.

Very curious as to the justification for the length. There must be a lot of drawn out explaining and showing.

For context, the Mario 35th Direct was only 15 minutes long, and featured 4-5 new game announcements.
its Sakurai he likes to talk and i say let him.

this was 48 minutes with one character and some mii fighters

But the point of all those character videos was to go in depth for them to show everything they put into each new character, how they play differently to the others, how they honour their origins and what not, whether Terry or Minecraft's Steve or whatever. And I don't think any were as 'Direct's.

It's extremely important, and COVID has nothing to do with it. It's related to the hardware, and how every exclusive so far have been glorified Switch 1 games so far. This one will break the pattern, or so it should.
Current Nintendo games look the way they do because that's the way they want them to look because of software budgets. It's nothing to do with hardware. The only two Switch 2 games that will look way better than original Switch games will be 3D Mario and 3D Zelda simply because those are the two games they usually push the budget out for.

Don't expect this Kirby game to blow your mind visually lol.

How the fuck someone can call the game like DK Bananza and say "glorified Switch 1 game"? You say this because it was originally being developed for original Switch? So based on that logic is The Last Guardian just "glorified PS3 game"? Is original InFAMOUS just "glorified PS2 game"?

I wish they'd glorify WipeOut or Motorstorm...

Well yes of course.

Thus far every big S2 game is a glorified S1 game.

Made Mario Kart for S1 but moved it late to S2. Made Donkey Kong first as a S1 game and moved it to S2. S1 players can even play game by linking up with an S2 player. Enhanced versions of BotW/TotK are glorified S1 games. Metroid Prime 4 is getting S1 and S2 versions so glorified S1 game.

Guess what Pokemon ZA also glorified S1 game since it coming to both consoles.

Like damn so far I haven't seen a single S2 game developed specifically for S2 since it's creation.

This will be Sakurai using 45m to OCD over the most irrelevant detsils.
I hope he does, watching Sakurai talk about game design in his series of videos was like watching a Michelin chef talk about his cuisine.

He had a whole video about how to render hitstun in a fighting game in a visually satisfying and readable way.

To be fair, they did this because they couldn't get it to run on S1 with what they wanted to do (they've said so in the "Ask the developer" interview series). So it's not really a S1 game...
And yet somehow it's running in co-op mode on a S1 so technically everything the S2 player is doing...is being performed on an S1. I'd rather pose the question have you guys developed a game specifically for S2 that did not start development on the S1.

It would be much more interesting to know the answer to that.

There is lot of game s does this, for example The Last Guardian was originally was being made for PS3 before moved the project for PS4….original InFAMOU is using modified Sly Cooper engine from PS2.

That doesn't mean DK Bananza could work on original Switch, in fact they moved it to Switch 2 exactly because they couldn't made it work for Switch 1.

Afaik it is working similar to how the Wii U Gamepad works, it gets most of the data streamed from the Switch 2 unit.

Which is amazing. Makes you wonder how many games they will implement to actually use that feature if games have a co-op or multiplayer function and they only need one person to own the game. Or if it's a one and done.

It has a dedicated button on the Switch 2 home screen, so you have to imagine they're going to try to implement it in as many games as possible.

You didn't hold this same standard when downplaying crossgen/not so ambitious PS5 games that obviously started on PS4, why hold it here as well? Any game started without next gen considerations for the start in mind is not next gen, and The Last Guardian is the perfect example of that, funnily enough.

this is super common. Like I immediately thought of Shenmue being made for the Saturn.

but it's bad and lazy when Nintendo does it...

"It's basically Mario Kart. I even mentioned this when I recived the request to make the game. I asked them if they still wanted to do it."

I love Sakurai, I could watch this guy present anything.

He is awesome but why is he wasted on a game like this instead of say, a full-on Kid Icarus game?

Hard disagree, I could believe it's a Switch game.
Visuals are really disappointing, not even anywhere near Mario Kart World standard.
Nah, World isn't even close. Just the lightning model here is ages better, and you can tell the DLSS usage from a mile also, unlike the crisp native 1440p of World. Suggesting legit hardware utilization.

Wrong. BotW is technically a glorified Wii U game.
