Nintendo First-Party Thread: The Teams, The Games, The Future

I should have bough some stock back when this thread was made.

Looking at the curve it wouldn't have made much difference, though. I should probably buy this year.

Looking only at 1st and 2nd party output over the last few years, I think you can form a few solid predictions of what to expect at Nintendo's E3 2017:

The Expected-

- We'll obviously get a deeper dive into Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2 and get a clearer idea of whether the latter will actually be releasing in 2017. If it is, I'd expect a December release.

- I think we'll also get a good look at Splatoon 2's story mode.

- We'll also likely get details on Zelda's Summer DLC.

- Kirby's holiday action title for 3DS will probably be revealed as well.

The Much Rumored -

- Of these two rumored titles, the Smash Bros port and Pokemon Stars, I think we'll get at least one for release in the late fall period. The Pokemon games are usually revealed 6 to 10 months before release, and typically not at E3, so if the Stars rumor is true, it will be interesting to see how it is revealed. If the Smash Bros port is revealed, and it has any new characters, I feel one is very likely to be an Inkling. Also, if Splatoon 2 is going to be releasing along side the online service app, I could possibly see a Smash Bros port launching when the online service becomes paid in the fall.

Animal Crossing Possibilities -

- Looking at EPD Group 2, the team that covers the Splatoon and Animal Crossing franchises, they have not released a mainline Animal Crossing title since 2012 (2013 in the US). It did receive a fairly large update in 2016, but it was free, and large parts of it were outsourced to other development teams. I wonder whether development for a new Animal Crossing had begun on the Wii U and was pushed to the side to wait for new hardware to come along. Meanwhile Happy Home designer was made as a stopgap title for the 3DS in 2015. The Animal Crossing Plaza on the Wii U was kind of a weird thing that didn't amount to much.

On top of this, the Animal Crossing mobile title reveal may have been delayed to tie it with the reveal of a new main version for the Switch. It's possible that the two titles may connect in some way. If Animal Crossing for Switch is revealed at E3, I'd expect it to be a Spring-Summer 2018 title. The main sticking point is how big EPD Group 2 is, and how much of the team they have working on Splatoon 2 and its future DLC.

Likely Reveals -

- There are two EPD teams which will very likely have at least one title to show off at E3, EPD Group 4 and Group 7.

- EPD Group 4 is in charge of the Pikmin and 2D Mario titles. Their last releases were Super Mario Maker in Fall 2015, and Pikmin 3 in Summer 2013. Pikmin 4 has been mentioned by Miyamoto several times, but with conflicting information - how the title is almost completed, but at the same time, how it has also fallen down the list of priorities. Seeing as it's likely this team will have at least one title ready in 2018, a reveal of either the Pikmin game, or perhaps a new 2D mario, will likely be shown at E3.

-EPD Group 7's last projects were Miitomo in 2016, which was co-developed, and the last Rhythm Heaven in 2015. I'd expect a new title to be shown at E3, whether a sequel to a well known franchise ( WarioWare would fit well on the Switch), or a brand new IP. Though I'm not sure how involved this team is in all the Miitomo updates.

The Greatest Mystery-

Finally, it would appear that Retro Studios should be ready to reveal something. I don't know what it could be. There were rumors that it was a new IP, but I guess we'll find out eventually. The main interesting piece of information about Retro Studios is that it took four years between their major releases of Donkey Kong Country Returns in 2010, and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze in 2014, yet they also assisted on Mario Kart 7 and the 3DS port of DKC Returns during that time. To my knowledge, that have not done any assist work since the release of Tropical Freeze, and have devoted all their resources to their next title, or possibly, titles. We also know they love barbecue.

- Animal Crossing can definitely be announced at E3. Although I would expect it Spring 2018 at earliest.
- Miitomo was developed by a standard 30 man in-house team at Nintendo. It seems Super Mario Run and FIre Emblem Heroes (IS) were also developed by their standard teams. DeNa is there for the server development and MyNintendo integration.
- Some remasters from NST and Tantalus would be ace.

What is Tantalus currently doing? I seem to remember them being the developers behind the Switch port of Sonic Mania and also maybe Rime? If that's true, are they big enough that they could be working on another project?

They are decent size and can do 2 ports at once. Doesn't mean they actually are though. We don't have confirmation Nintendo has hired them for another project.

Listen, I would love for the rest of the year to be:
-ARMS
-Splatoon 2
-Fire Emblem Warriors
-Mario + Rabbids
-Pokken
-Smash
-Xenoblade 2
-Odyssey
-Pokemon

But I think 1-2 may get shuffled around (or delayed) - my main guess would be XB2. Besides, a 2018 with 1-2 of those titles, plus Retro's game, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Mario Party, and maybe NLG and HAL would be a solid second year. I want HAL to make a Switch Kirby but the thing is that they haven't made a traditionally-styled Kirby game in HD yet, so they'd need to start from scratch for most of the assets.

2019 ... maybe a Majora's Mask-style sequel to BotW, a sequel to ARMS (if it takes off; they did it with Wii Sports, Pikmin, Splatoon, Wii Fit), Good-Feel, maybe Grezzo, Mario sports of some sort (better than Ultra Smash, we live in hope).

- Animal Crossing can definitely be announced at E3. Although I would expect it Spring 2018 at earliest.

Animal Crossing I could see them holding off until Holiday 2018 if they feel like it'll fare better then. Seems to have been what they did for New Leaf in Japan when it was first released. Or games like Ever Oasis, S.T.E.A.M., Woolly World, Paper Mario, etc...those don't feel like games that were coming down to the wire.

2018 sounds like a good time for things like Animal Crossing, Mario Maker 2, Kirby... Perhaps even Sakurai's new game, depending on how involved he is in Smash for Switch.

I really hope this generation that Tokyo gets to work on something big that is non-Mario branded. Captain Toad was great (and I'd dig a sequel) but it'd be nice to see them go crazy with something completely new.

I think Pokemon should be saved for next year, this year line up is too strong, adding Pokemon would be overkilled

At the very least, I think it should be announced during this year as it would send a very clear message about the Switch and the future.

I think E3 next year will be suitable for Pokemon, by that time the switch will have a decent userbase and Pokemon will make sure that next year will be an awesome E3. By now, a smash port, fire emblem, smt hd or that rabbid+ mario will be enough for this year lol

Or it be this year and next year :p

All this talk about NLG... I was getting worried that maybe Nintendo cut them off because Metroid Prime Fed Force did not do so hot. I hope they stick around and do more collabs with Nintendo.

NLG produced successful Nintendo games in three different franchises before Fed Force, and Dark Moon was one of the best selling games on 3DS. Why would Nintendo cut them off after one flop?

It was Nintendo's decision to make MPFF so it's not NLG fault if wasn't what the fans wanted..

I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen with GameCube games, will they be released via the next version of Virtual Console or will select titles be given HD remaster treatment?

Virtual console blow out would also be a huge deal to me

If by blowout you mean 8 NES games, SNES and N64 "eventually", and no word of GCN games whatsoever, then you just might almost get what you wish for!

It was Nintendo's decision to make MPFF so it's not NLG fault if wasn't what the fans wanted..

Kensuke Tanabe owns that game's failings, so if Nintendo passes the buck to NLG, that would be pretty fucked. I doubt they would though.

Luigi's Mansion 2 moved something like 4 million units. MPFF is a great game that was doomed from the get-go. Nintendo knows it's not the game itself or what NLG did. Not sure why that would have any repercussions for their relationship. Things are fine.

I would not worry about Nintendo's and NLG's relation based on one unsuccessful game. Devil's Third bombed too, but Nintendo still continued working with Valhalla Game Studios with Momotaro Dentetsu.

I can't see them launching two fighters in the fall. I really can't see both Smash AND Pokemon AND Mario in the same fall too. Nintendo is trying to be better about spacing releases.

I suspect rest of the year will be:
-ARMS
-Splatoon 2
-Fire Emblem Warriors
-Mario + Rabbids
-Smash GOTY port
-Odyssey
-Xenoblade 2

2018 will be:
-Pokemon (in the Spring)
-Pokken GOTY port
-Retro's game
-Fire Emblem
-Animal Crossing
-Mario Party
-Mario Maker

With some possibilities going forward into 2019 and beyond of a new Zelda using the BotW engine, 2D Mario, Paper Mario, Mario Sports, Kirby, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, further Pokemon titles, further Fire Emblem titles, etc....

More than 5 million last I saw.

It's going to be very difficult for anyone to predict the line up for 2018 onwards considering Nintendo seem to be focusing more on new IP moving forward.

I'm actually pretty curious about what NST is working on now that Mario Maker for 3DS is out. It would be interesting if they were given some HD remasters from the Gamecube/Wii era or some sort of enhanced Wii U port... though I wouldn't be surprised to see them back on another Mario Vs Donkey Kong.

I feel like there has to be a Paper Mario: Color Splash being worked on at some level. It was a great game that was kind of ignored by a large audience, and I think it could do better on the Switch.

I would prefer a HD remaster of Paper Mario TTYD than Colour Splash coming back, be great to see that along with an announcement of a true sequel.

Are NST a port/remaster studio mostly then? I hope Nintendo have got a few studios working on remasters, I want Switch to have the most complete Nintendo library it possibly can

Except Nintendo has already confirmed that the old-style Paper Mario gameplay has moved to the Mario and Luigi series. There will be no "true sequels" to that game.

They need to be a port/remaster studio at this point...they make Mario vs. DK games and they're not allowed to make any other new games. Might as well let them port and remaster games atleast.

Nintendo already said they're done with Color Splash type of games. I wouldn't believe them when it comes to "we're done with TTDY type of games". Nintendo fans have spoken up two games in a row that they don't like Paper Mario being a non RPG. Why would they keep producing something that goes against what the fans want?

I can see Paper Mario going back to form with the Switch. I can't see Color Splash being ported. TBH there are other game way more deserving that Color Splash from the Wii U.

I must have missed this. Do you have a link?

Also the first I'm hearing of this.

By the way, Sticker Star sold gangbusters. I don't think they're getting the message you'd want them to get. And the post-TTYD games exist as they are because of the actual feedback they got from that.^^

I personally found Colour Splash really dull and not at all as great as the originals. I would rather them try these things with the Mario & Luigi series and make Paper Mario the main RPG game.

I find Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario both really tired by this point, wouldn't mind them sitting this generation out.
Same goes for Mario Party and the sports titles too. Creatively stagnant.

Emily Rogers says the official title of the game is called Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and it's published by Ubisoft, not Nintendo.

https://arcadegirl64.wordpress.com/2017/04/22/quick-thoughts-on-switchs-year-one/
So Emily claims it's called "Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle?" Do you think that'd be pronounced "Mario and Rabbids," or literally "Mario plus Rabbids?"

Assuming her rumors, and other rumors pan out, maybe we could be looking at the following for Switch's first year (in terms of notable first- and third-party games — note this list is not comprehensive):

March: Breath of the Wild / Super Bomberman R
April: Puyo Puyo Tetris / Mario Kart 8 DELUXE
May: Minecraft / Ultra Street Fighter II
June: ARMS
July: Splatoon 2
August: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
September: Fire Emblem Warriors
October: Pokemon Stars
November: Mario Odyssey / Smash Bros for Switch
December: Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Wildcards: A new Animal Crossing... Pikmin 4... Retro Studio's new game... Maybe new games from Monster Games, Next Level Games, and/or Camelot... I also wonder what the NSMB/Mario Maker team is working on? Oh, and don't forget the Virtual Console... potentially with GCN titles, and/or Mother 3!

If Pokemon Stars and Smash Switch are real and both this year, I think Switch will have the best non-launch holiday ever for a Nintendo system.

Additional wildcard would be Kid Icarus Uprising 2 or whatever Sakurai is working on. Doubt he's involved much in the Smash port.

Kid Icarus Uprising is one of my favorite games ever. However, I think Sakurai is indeed overseeing a "definitive edition" of Smash 4, one compiling content from both the WiiU and 3DS versions (remastering the latter) and incorporating all DLC, along with some new content including, yes, new characters.

Nice thing about a definitive edition on a new system is Sakurai has the perfect excuse to break roster parity and bring back, say, Ice Climbers. I can already picture him explaining in the E3 Digital Event: "The Ice Climbers weren't possible on the WiiU due to CPU restrictions in eight-player Smash, or in the 3DS version due to CPU restrictions in general. But on the Switch, they're better than ever!"

However, it'd be cool if a Kid Icarus Uprising sequel was entrusted to, say, PlatinumGames, with Sakurai playing a consultation role similar to what Kamiya did on Bayonetta 2. Sakurai would also hopefully write the script again.

GI: What do you think of feedback saying that (despite Toads having different personalities) we miss the variety in NPC characters from the old games? Why haven’t some of the old NPCs from the early Paper Mario games ever returned?

Tanabe: Mario is not an IP that I created. From the position of someone borrowing the IP, I think it’s only natural to show respect to the person who created it, and let that feeling of respect guide us. So when Miyamoto-san, the father of Mario, asks us “could you make a game with only characters from the Mario family?”, I think it’s only natural for us to give it our best shot.
In other words, we are not currently thinking about returning to old NPCs.

Incidentally, I do think Color Splash may have proven that we can still make a game entertaining, even if our original characters don’t appear as NPCs. And with that belief, we will keep on continuing to do our best.

GI: Would you ever consider bringing back companion characters with different abilities?

Tanabe: Personally, I don’t give much thought to how we are leaving old methods behind in any series, not just Paper Mario. I always prioritize thinking about how we can build new methods and new elements. Of course, there were some series where we have not made big changes to the systems, but sometimes that’s because we feel as though these systems haven’t been perfected yet, or the gameplay can be expanded even further. We felt both of those things in Color Splash.

However, I do feel as though we reached the end of where Color Splash is headed, so if we get the chance to continue the series, I think we’ll want to create a Paper Mario with a different system.

I'm surprised you guys missed this. Again MIYAMOTO is wanting them use only Mario characters. I'm tired of his input in Paper Mario. He's ruining the series. Hopefully, he's done giving inputs.

Also, Tanabe basically confirmed they're done with this type of Paper Mario (SS & CS). SS sold well so they tried to build on it and Miyamoto again asked them to only use Mario characters instead of unique NPCs.

I expect a return to RPG Paper Mario and Miyamoto not having a influence no more. They have to listen to the fans now.

Color Splash is one of the most hysterical games I've played; pure comedy gold, that script. That said I don't count on it getting a remaster anytime soon. TTYD is more likely but given the rumored GC VC perhaps they'd rather just put it there. Which, is kinda funny to think about; in Wind Waker HD's Iwata Asks, they talk about devising ways to convert Gamecube data to Wii U, which would presumably work with more titles beyond Zelda ones, and yet Wind Waker HD was the only GC remaster the Wii U got that Nintendo developed in house, no matter how well it sold.

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff. Gives me hope for the future of the series.

Has anybody seen this recent interview with Masuda?

https://youtu.be/pI11J9ds20I?t=3m59s

At 3:59 he is questioned about the future of Pokémon on Switch and he says that at first he thought that the console was designed mainly to be played at home, but was surprised to see many people using as a handheld, and he even asks the interviewer if he uses the Switch more as a console or as a handheld. He concludes by stating that they will see how people use Switch before making a decision.

So far everything Masuda has said in interviews sound like a Pokémon Switch game really isn't in development yet.

Hmmm I guess I could see that for Smash. Though I just want to see what he does next besides it. Uprising was an amazing experience so I look forward to whatever he does.

No problem I definitely have hope for the Paper Mario series. Who knows which way they'll go next, but Nintendo is giving us what we want with BotW and Super Mario Odyssey. I'm hoping that carries over to Paper Mario.

We had a topic where they're hiring to make a Pokémon game on Switch I thought? Plus this doesn't eliminate a Pokémon Stars because I think we assume Pokémon Stars isn't starting from the ground up on Switch.

Not sure if anyone saw Emily's blog post that shared some info on the rumored Rabbids game from the other day. I thought people would like to see.

About the weapons.

"They're not realistic guns, they don't shoot bullets. They are sci-fi cartoonish guns that shoot lasers, energy beams, and things of that nature. Characters can even have arm cannons ala Mega Man/Metroid."

About the game's art direction.

"As I mentioned yesterday, the art style and aesthetics remind me a little of Super Mario 3D World, but it's a bit more detailed than 3D World."
