Nintendo First-Party Thread: The Teams, The Games, The Future

With the push of UE4 in Japan do you think Nintendo would use the engine for one of their IPs or maybe a new IP? Would be a cool thing to debut at E3.

Yeah we'll see how well UE4 runs on the Switch. Unity runs horribly on it, as evidenced by Super Bomberman R.

People leaving Mario + Sonic at the Olympics off their 2018 lists :(

Peosonally i'm expecting Nintendo to mostly release 1 game a month going forward and up to about 4 new IPs a year going forward.

Edit: just read Emily's thoughts on Starfox. My 2 cents on where to take it. VR or some other form of 3 stick control. Games like Steep and Starfox struggle with control scheme because they need 2 sticks to control the players movement (plane) in the 3D space, but require a camera/aim control seperate to that. If you mapped Starfox Zero's gamepad control to a Gear VR style accelerometer headset, it would work perfectly.

Although if Nintendo wanted to take a bigger chance, a 3D racer/Flight sim inspired by burnout paradise (a fully vertical open world futuristic city for flying through) Featuring Nintendo mascots from their Scifi inspired series like Starfox, F Zero, Metroid, Xenoblade, Wonderful 101 ect would be a dream game for me, and completely unique across all 3 current console platforms.

I don't see them doing 4 new IPs a year. Realistically they should be able to put out about 10 games a year with one(mayyyyybe 2) of those being a new IP.

Didn't we already have a game that released on Switch uses UE4. How was the performance on that?

I thought that there was a leak that Nintendo was hiring UE4 devs for a 1st party thing?

Dunno if there was a leak but there was an article about them being familiarize with engine.

Mobile link sorry.

Digital Foundry praised it because it has a lot going on under the hood, but it's not the best measuring stick since it's subnative on all consoles. I think Redout is the next confirmed UE4 game coming to Switch.

They already have two new IPs this year in ARMS and Project Mekuru. Idk if people would consider Mario + Rabbids a new IP.

Takhashi said Nintendo has a lot of new IPs coming. I could see 3 new IPs a year ranging from big to small.

Really interested in this rumored Mario RPG. Hope Ubisoft is allowed to use some of the secondary Mario cast, like Waluigi and Daisy.

Would be fun to see rather than the usual Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser lineup Nintendo has been using in the RPGs lately.

Isn't Project Mekuru a 3rd party game that Nintendo's picking up in the west? Are they also publishing in Japan or is Over Fence doing it thenselves?

what about third party games? really want to see which Japan third party game using UE4 is coming to the switch lol

Btw, how many Japan games in development using UE4 right now? Only know SMT HD and DQXI

Kingdom Hearts 3
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Ace Combat 7
Code Vein
Marvel vs Capcom Infinite
Tekken 7
....these are the major ones I can think of.

There is suppose to be 20 games coming to the Switch that are using UE4 so maybe it might some of these or stuff that hasn't been revealed yet.

18, if we take smt and dq11 out, but yeah, maybe a few of those games will end up on the console. Switch will probably be a big cake in the future, so I doubt Japan developers will abandon it

Bandai Namco and Square Enix seem to have moved to UE4 for major internal teams. On top of that there's Bloodstained and the Neptunia series from their latest game on. I wouldn't be surprised if the new No More Heroes is UE4 too. Various notable publishers are probably switching to UE4 since all the major devices support it

So right now there are Bloodstained, DQXI and Smt are switch games that are using UE4 as of now(or maybe Neptunia and NMH in the future). Speaking of games using UE4, will square localize DQH 1+2 or nah?

I wonder if we will see SNES remix anytime soon? Might be held back because of the rumoured SNES mini and potential virtual console launch but I would love to see it eventually

Hell, i would love them to port NES remix 1&2 to Switch

20+ is a big number, and afaik not many Japanese Indies use UE4, so it should be some good stuff in the pipeline, at the very least a lot of AA game which is my personal bread and butter

So Emily claims it's called "Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle?" Do you think that'd be pronounced "Mario and Rabbids," or literally "Mario plus Rabbids?"

Assuming her rumors, and other rumors pan out, maybe we could be looking at the following for Switch's first year (in terms of notable first- and third-party games — note this list is not comprehensive):

March: Breath of the Wild / Super Bomberman R
April: Puyo Puyo Tetris / Mario Kart 8 DELUXE
May: Minecraft / Ultra Street Fighter II
June: ARMS
July: Splatoon 2
August: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
September: Fire Emblem Warriors
October: Pokemon Stars
November: Mario Odyssey / Smash Bros for Switch
December: Xenoblade Chronicles 2

This is exactly what I'm thinking could be the lineup. Although I don't think Smash Bros. will be this year. I think BotW DLC release in November though. Switch will have enough AAA multiplayer franchise releases in the first year with MK8D, Arms, Splatoon 2, and Pokémon alone. This is what I could see for 2018 based on their teams and content released in the past:

February: Super Smash Bros.- content from both versions of 4, new characters, stages, items, other content, additional modes, expanded options in different modes, etc.

March: Fire Emblem Switch/3DS

April: Pikmin 4

May: Retro Studios game

June: Mario Party

July: Pokken

August: Wii U remaster such as DK:TF, Captain Toad, Bayonetta 1+2, etc. outsourced to a different team such as Tantalus or Monster Games.

September: Mario Maker

October: 2D Zelda

November: Animal Crossing

2019: Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion (Next Level Games), 3D Mario 3DW-style title, new ips from EAD studios, Nintendo platformer spinoff from Good Feel, Hyrule Warriors 2, Pokemon Gen 8.

This also ignores the possibility of DLC for MK8D, ARMS, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Super Mario Odyssey, Smash Bros., etc. Not too mention I think Switch has a few big third party games lined up.

Your list is basically old IPs and rereleases/updates of old games, and a game from Retro Studios? Even the Wii U software had a better new IP ratio than that, and currently the Switch first party catalog releases with about 50% new IPs for the software with known release dates.

Wildcards: A new Animal Crossing... Pikmin 4... Retro Studio's new game... Maybe new games from Monster Games, Next Level Games, and/or Camelot... I also wonder what the NSMB/Mario Maker team is working on? Oh, and don't forget the Virtual Console... potentially with GCN titles, and/or Mother 3!

If Pokemon Stars and Smash Switch are real and both this year, I think Switch will have the best non-launch holiday ever for a Nintendo system.

Yeah, laid out like that, I think that either pokemon or smash is probably going to be next year. Probably pokemon, since smash seems like the kind of game they'd use to make people pay for the online services

I'm surprised you guys missed this. Again MIYAMOTO is wanting them use only Mario characters. I'm tired of his input in Paper Mario. He's ruining the series. Hopefully, he's done giving inputs.

This bit is ancient news. That goes back to Sticker Star days. The relevant bit is the part about going in a new direction which I (we?) actually did miss.

I know the Miyamoto influence goes back to sticker star, but to see his influence continued in another game is sad. I hope his influence on Paper Mario is done. The fans have spoken two games in a row and they said they're done with the SS/CS direction.

only if they can squeeze nintendo's balls into publishing it, as usual.

I meant they were still talking about this old mandate.

Doesn't Bomberman run at 60 fps now?

With dropped resolutions, yes.

between pushing the control scheme in Starfox Zero and pushing what characters can go in Paper Mario, I'm kinda hoping Miyamoto takes a step back from getting involved soon.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Miyamoto is involved in just about every first party game to some degree.

Has there been any rumblings on the Xenoblade Chronicles X Switch port? Or did they die out once 2 got announced?

Exactly 0 rumblings ever since the original rumblings. Xenoblade 2 killed that, as far as I'm concerned. Maybe they'll do it later, if they ever need to fill a spot in the year or something.

Miyamoto is pretty much out of the mix now. They've got him doing other things. The younger guys have taken over.

Good thing is Koizumi likes story and is different from Miyamoto, but in a good way. I'd like to see his influence in other games.
