That only happens if you do it through the friends-list. If they send it through Miiverse then you'll get a friend-request.

Actually, it is the number of people who have participated in the community. It's right in the Miiverse digital manual. Go to User Menu > Manual > #8 Communities > #2, 4th one down "Community Participants - This shows the number of people who have actively participated in this community."

Nope, you are right. Nintendo said it will have a smart phone app, a 3DS implementation, and be accessible through a computer as well I believe. The phone app can't get here soon enough.

Adding additional fields to the profile should not be a difficult task at all. Hopefully they are able to do it soon.

I know that's what the manual says but I just tested this and it didn't work. I went to the Chasing Aurora Community (which is very small) and replied to a comment, yet the number remained at 551.

And you didn't test making a new post in a community you had already posted in? That's not a very scientific test. The number doesn't go up right away either.

Jackano just replied to a post of mine and the counter went up. It was his first post in that community.

I'm going with what the manual says.
