Well the price in the UK is holding me back. I refuse to pay over £40 for any game especially considering most tank in price months after release. £40+ for this, huge meh. Even TW3 wouldn't get bought at £40+ by me but for what it is worth it wasn't that price in the UK at launch.

No idea why Sony have decided to push retail to RRP the fuck out of this game. Selling on hype?

'Push retail to RRP'? What? This is a huge game which is well designed and has loads of great content. How much is appropriate for that?

For everyone currently playing it. Do you think this is a good application for PSVR?

Definitely. Absolutely. I can't wait for VR PC mods. It's going to be a masterpiece.

Restarted due to the pre-order ship fuckery, glad i did. Started in a much more interesting system full of planets, got all the upgrades i had previously and an alien gave me an upgraded multi-tool. All within about 30 minutes.

Enjoying it a lot more than i thought i would tbh.

Wow the 2nd system I discovered has already been discovered by someone else..

They might not be too far away considering the game just came out. Maybe you can follow their trajectory based on their discoveries.

Are you sure? All the systems already have a "name". The odds of your second system being one another player have been to are basically 0.

Actually running into another play is basically 0. Encountering a discovered planet? I'm not sure. It's highly unlikely right now but not impossible.

Sean basically said in AMA last night that they are still implementing and debugging PC features, while release may be quite late at Friday because of it.
It almost sounded like Friday was optimistic. That's why I decided not to wait for it.

They seem to be pushing the deadline and I hope they push it back rather than forcing it out the door.

1. No. You never see your player character. You don't "look" like anything.
2. No*

*They've been weirdly ambiguous about this. The odds of being in the same place at the same time as another player are ~0.... but they never said what you would theoretically see. Sean emphasizes this is a single player game, however.

I see, thanks for the answers !

I don't think I would enjoy the discovery aspect of this game. The pleasure of exploring in a game for me comes from knowing that each discovery gets you one step closer to completion. That's the whole point of something like catching all the Pokémon. I don't think it would be any fun to catch Pokémon if they were just infinitely procedurally generated.

There is also hand-crafted discovery.

Alien languages, ship upgrades, suit upgrades, weapon upgrades, alien standing, backstory, present story (with 'choose your own adventure' style decisions) and puzzles are all brilliant things you discover besides all the procedural stuff.

The procedural stuff is just to give it scale and make the moment-to-moment experience unique.

Firstly WOW! Much impressed. Started at 8am this morning, now 3pm. Played for about 5 hours total, had some breaks.

My first thought? Sid Meiers Civilization, the original on the Amiga. That was the last time, possibly the only time, a game as grabbed my attention this way. I remember first playing Civ and looking up at the clock 2 days later wondering where the time had gone and if I should actually get some sleep. I can see this game becoming the time hole grabbing my attention this way again, especially given I can remote play on the Vita...

My second thought? Someone played a lot, and I mean a lot, of Elite back in the ol' 8-bit days and wanted to make the ultimate version of this game. They succeeded, and then some. When I played the wire-framed original on my Amstrad CPC "back in the day" THIS is the game I was imagining playing.

My third thought? My god, a first person game not giving me motion sickness! I usually hate first person with a passion and pretty much avoid them in favour of third person adventures like Assassins Creed and Uncharted.

So...Captains Log: Stardate 544129.2
I woke up in my ship, appear to have crash landed. Man I don't remember what happened but my ships wrecked.

I get out and appear to be in a dormant volcano crater. Man it's cold, -60 degrees. My exosuit warns me of extreme -75 degrees night time temperatures. I can't travel far away from my ship or I'll freeze to death.

I head out, and tentatively explore around the edge of the crater, heading back to my ship every so often to warm up. Slowly I learn the distance I can travel out during the day without freezing, I start exploring a wider area for Plutonium, Zinc, and Hadrium(?).

On one of my trips out I travel a bit far out, luckily I find on outpost to take shelter in. I soon learn I can recharge my suite on the move. Near one of the outposts I find an cave system full of Plutonium. I get lost in the caves collecting plutonium, not realising my suit is full until I get back to the ship...without the plutonium - doh!

Finally, the ship is fixed, I can take off. There's a moon about an hours flight away, I notice a space station orbiting it and a beacon coming from the surface. I hit the boosters and head for the space station.

-

I've explored the second planet, which is much more temperate and resourceful than the first, thank god. And just finished sorting the Hyperdrive out. Inventories a little over full. Not sure what to sell and what to hang on to yet. I could warp out, but I think I might be in this system a while longer. I'm going to go back to the space station and then possible a final trip down to the second planet...

So far, only one question. How do I name animals? I've found some creatures that I've come to call 'Spiderbrains'. Because, well, they look like a big brain on spider legs. But I haven't worked out how to officially name them yet.

Press options and find the animal on the planet there and press triangle.

I think they have to push it out during Friday no matter what and did they like state build or not. PC community backslash will be all kinds of nutso if game gets delayed even more for PC.

It'll be worse if it's a mess.

You only get to launch once.

You're in luck, then, that most planets (not all) have a "discoveries" checklist of major species and locations, and if you complete them all you get a significant credits bonus. (Or at least the game keeps advertising I would get 225,000 credits if I fully explored some of my early planets. I'm too busy trying to get to the later systems to complete any one.)

I can't leave the space station lol

I'm pressing R2 and I just hear a beeping noise. Fuel is full.

Is your ship in the floor?

It'll be worse if it's a mess.

You only get to launch once.

If build doesn't reach level they want it will be lose-lose situation for devs. Either they delay even more and get shit for it OR they launch somewhat incomplete build and get shit for it.

Hopefully they can get wrap on PC build before Friday.

Each planet I've been to only presents the same experience of wandering around alone picking up resources and occasionally looking at pointless animals with randomized little features and attachments. Everything just feels so shallow.

Only been to a few planets, but feeling the same. I expected this from the day it was announced, but curiosity still fed the desire to give it the benefit of the doubt. Just not seen much here that will keep me engaged for the long-term. Even when I logged off last night, I wasn't really all that enthused to return again tonight after work.

Can sympathize with those that are wide-eyed and agape at the minor permutations, but it isn't happening for me.

So if you can see other players' names when they've named something, you can just message them and try to meet up, right? We could put all the mystery around that to bed pretty quickly.

The amount of videos about NMS on YouTube is insane. For example, I went to Gamespot YT page and this is what I found on the most recent videos...

So what's the big deal with antimatter and using the pre-order ship? Do you miss a good chuck of tutorial information by using the new ship? I switched to it just to avoid the nagging alert message telling me I had unredeemed items.

Not sure if it's worth deleting the save and starting over? I only put in about 45 minutes.

Personally, I can't agree. I HATED destiny at first and had I not gone back and forced myself to push through the initial starting period, I would have missed out on one of my now-favorite games.
I mean I kinda mentioned that possibility right in that post. Demon's Souls is one of my favorite games of all time as well.

But, 9 times out of 10 this policy makes for increased happiness across the board.

I honestly don't think that someone who finds NMS boring and not fun at all at first is going to love it later on. I guess you never know. I don't think it's the kind of game where suffering through frustration and failure is part of the "get," like it was for me with Souls. It's a pretty chill and inspiring experience.
Planning on writing some Hawkian guides for NMS? Still remember your awesome stuff for Destiny that you wrote and did :)
First mini one already exists!

As far as moment-to-moment fun, I don't think there's anything to be done if it's just not appealing to you in general. BUT I do think there are some things to consider that can be considered basic tips to improve the fun factor:

  • Consider switching L3 and R3 in your PS4 accessibility options. I don't like Sprint on R3 at all. Just a personal preference though.
  • Boost dashing is super crucial and fun as hell, get the hang of it ASAP.
You want to Melee + Jetpack for a momentum burst. Sprint, then Melee + Jetpack for the biggest of all. You can really cover some distance this way and jump some big chasms. You can maintain momentum as long as you have jetpack charge.

I have seen "slow movement speed" as one of the most oft-cited complaints so far. IMO this is completely solved with this trick and on-foot movement speed doesn't need to be adjusted at all.

  • Your mining laser should never overheat- when your bar turns red, remove your finger from the trigger for a second and then squeeze it again (you don't have to wait for it to "cool back down"). Play with the trigger until you get the rhythm.
  • When you pulse jump, you've effectively "laid in a course" for your current destination/direction, you can take your fingers off all the buttons and access your menus while you cruise. Particularly great for organizing your stacks on the journey between surface and space station.

Going to try to avoid most those videos. Want it all fresh. I really messed up with Fallout 4's launch and watched way too much stuff...

It's not the animal / procedural stuff that's grabbing me at the moment, it's just the massive sense of scale and the progression in items/multitool/ships etc.

The animal mutations feel 'computery' to me and don't interest me much, though I'm scanning a lot of them anyway. I'm finding the choice in upgrades etc is what's most compelling at the moment, and I'm finding the exploration quite meditative. It's super relaxing, for me.

I'm at a starport / dock thing at the moment and just chiling while ships come and go. I love it!

No Man's Sky's biggest problem IMO-

The system crashes. I have experienced 5 crashes in about 8 hours play time. 3 of them were hard locks. 2 were crashes back to the dash while I was streaming last night.

Love how I pre-ordered this game, and it still hasn't even shipped yet. What lovely service for a prime customer Amazon.
Seems uncharacteristic of Amazon.. mine shipped yesterday afternoon and it out for delivery now

Yeah, my biggest gripe so far is definitely the inventory space, just way too limited.

The base game they're working with is pretty fun and full of potential. Tweaks over the next few months will turn this into a masterpiece.

With steam refunds delaying makes much more sense. If the game is somehow messed up people will just request a refund.

I'll double dip when it drops on PC. Just concerning they were still buttoning things up and it would be a late release on Friday.
