Then what are the other better options for space exploration? Starbound?
I was playing Starbound in the build up to NMS release, and it's quite similar. I think which is better will be down to taste, a lot of people found Starbound to be grindy and repetitive (as some people have for NMS) but it does have a basic narrative you can follow. I would describe it as Terraria crossed with NMS.

You can forget about proper spaceflight though, you essentially teleport up to your ship from the surface and then jump between planets. It has its charm but might be a deal breaker for some.

Estimates from findings of NASA's Kepler program. I'm at work so I can't find the exact studies but if you google the story plenty of news organizations reported the estimates starting from 2013 onward to present.

I've followed the kepler program quite closely but NASA's "earth-like" definition is very loose. "To qualify as potentially life-friendly, a planet must be relatively small (and therefore rocky) and orbit in the "habitable zone" of its star."

I found new blueprints with the same message and I couldn't craft them when I tried. I then realized that I already had that update on my multi-tool. After dismantling it I was able to recraft it in a spot that connected with the other upgrades. That would basically mean that upgrades are one-per-item for each upgrade level. Could it be that whatever you are currently using (ship or tool) already has the upgrade installed?

for the underwater one, at least, definitely not. Pretty sure I didn't have anything added to my exosuit then, and I have no idea what could block that from being crafted.

Also:

Is there any way to repair your ship's "health" after getting into a fight?

I got a ship witha preinstalled Warp reactor! (the thing tht buffs the warp drive)

Yay! I'll be able to jump further, and further, and further.

I'm really enjoying the soundtrack. Every now and then I'll hear some music that makes me just want to sit and chill to a beautiful vista I just discovered. Now if only we could sit down...

While it doesn't have the "endless" hook of these procedural games, X3 is a great and huge game that will give so much to explore that I think it ends up being a longer term experience than an "endless" game if you know what I mean? Like I played that game for around 80 hours and felt like I was just cracking the surface by the end.

Yeh I found a crashed ship with this yesterday. Moved my shit over and got it fixed in an instant. Will be interesting to see how this impacts my progression now.

Found my first planet with oceans today, and found an opening in a rock and went exploring some caves.

Holy shit got lost and almost drowned.

That's some great stuff. You should try to get this to the OP. If anyone else find any other useful tips, it could be gathered and added to your post which will hopefully be in the OP.

I don't have any to add, I got the PS4 limited edition. Only played for like an hour before I shipped it to my friend. I only wanted the loot, waiting for my PC copy to be unlocked tomorrow.

I collected a few posts that have some tips and useful info. Might be worth a read before starting.
GustyGardens' post on how to obtain anti-matter and anti-matter recipe with and without the pre order ship
Figboy79's beginner's guide
Reddit post on how to add waypoints to buildings.

I couldn't really get into elite because how complicated the flying of the aircraft. You need to know quite a bit before you can even land in a space station. Though I don't have the expansion with the planetary landing.

Having seen people's opinions on NMS however, nothing in the game seems flawed to the point where it can't be fixed with patches or mods however:

Inventory: Probably one of the easier things to mod in most games. Especially for just storing higher values.

Ship combat: They've already added a bit more to it in the last patch, but still has a long way to go. Together with the on foot combat perhaps the hardest to change, but there's been combat overhaul mods plenty in the past (especially for bethesda games)

Planet generation: Okay, Minecraft modding made things like the skyworld mod, a mod that amplified it's generation and takes up to eleven. (and ended up in the base game)

Outposts: Oh, modders will create extra races with uniquely themed outposts if they're able to.

NPC's: There's been NPC mods that overhaul how they behave (mostly Bethesda games) so they could mod in advanced alien races wandering the planet

Creatures: Modders could feasibly add more creature archetypes and animations to the generation to create more varied. Also a higher % of whatever the modders feel like (mor ehuge creatures etc)

Even if the game isn't necessarily mod friendly, if the audience is big enough. People will manage it. Even if it goes as far as reverse-engineering it and then modding it. (that has been done a few times I believe)

and since it's on GoG it doesn't have dunevo so modding should be easier.

By the way, how do you repair your ship?

I got attacked and lost a couple of ship icons from under the shield bar, I know how to recover health but how do I recover that?

I don't disagree. But still given the numbers in our rather small galaxy alone, and the number of galaxies in the known universe, and the growing steam that our universe is one among many or even infinite amounts, the idea that Earth is a special little snowflake is losing ground the more we learn.

so a few questions that I keep asking myself if I continued on one planet walking or flying on it would I ever run out of new stuff to discover or would it just continue ad infinitum? secondly will anyone or everyone find every planet or will it just continue,

when its procedural generated does that mean in our instance when we first land on a planet its making it up as it goes along?

cheers

Loving the game but I could not for the life of me explain why I find such a chill game so engrossing.

Has anyone found planets with exciting weather? I thought Sean mentioned some planets could have tornadoes or giant hurricanes.

I enjoy the planets, but so far the weather(or lack of) is a joke. Best I have seen is some very light snow that kind of looked terrible.

Also I'm seeing the same type plants and animals on different planets. Nothing like in the trailers that's for sure.

Found a pretty dead planet though which was cool. Still had some plants even though it said flora none.

I don't think he ever said there would be tornado's though. He did mention extreme weather like dust storms and blizzards. But those are only on extreme planets.

No idea man but its not even the crashes as much as the blueprint bug.

Its this shit. No I dont already have it. And its not just this blueprint, its every one. Ive been finding cool shit but none of them show up in my inventory.

Totally game breaking for me and I think I may put it down until it gets fixed.

I tried loading an older save. Still happens. I pretty much cant upgrade anything at this point.

And Im waaaay the fuck to far to start over.

Well I guess I could farm gravitinos until the cows come home.

This is clearly bug, but I think it is a different bug than the one you think it is. Those terminals always contain some multitool upgrade, so it should be impossible to find a warp upgrade there. I think when you've found all the basic multitool upgrades and these terminals can't give you any more, they just pick one upgrade at random from all the upgrades ingame and claims you already have it.

Sometimes the aliens offer a repair if you keep talking to them. You need to be on fairly good terms with them and hope you have whatever they ask for.

There must be another way, but I haven't seen it yet.

Run, hit melee then instantly hit jetpack. You'll go flying, repeat to keep up the speed. Makes running around on foot fun.

This is a really huge thing everyone should know about. It's a small mechanically simple thing but it makes the on foot movement pretty engaging.

Anyone encounter stuff like this yet? I recall seeing a GIF as well showing it in game
One GAFfer who has played the game (at the press event last month) said that they found a planet which was all one massive storm. It was perpetually pitch black, with lighting and heavy rain. He could only see a few feet in front of him. It was so cold and dangerous he had to find a cave for shelter. Then mine for resources so he could upgrade his suit/ship to escape.

I think I hit my first space anomaly a few systems back, but didn't realize what is was and so unintentionally ignored it and moved on. Do I need to go back to it to
get the AtlasPass v1 and continue the Atlas path
or will I be able to do this by randomly getting an anomaly in another system while I move forward?

Todays the day, after work my joutney begins.

Aldo curious about this, the latest patch even saod they added storms but I have yet to see any footage posted.

One of my planets was hammered by torrential rain constantly, and would have a storm every few minutes. It'd crash my PS4 if I spent too long there, so I didn't hang about long

Damn... I just remembered that when I helped a friend build his htpc last weekend I let him borrow one of my sticks of RAM until his comes in...

I doubt this will run well on 4GB of RAM...

Storms, yes. Which are basically just heavy rain with bad visibility and more suit damage. No lightning, no tornadoes, nothing like what you quoted.

it's friday! only 7 and a half hours to go! this week has gone in surpisingly fast. can't wait to play this tonight.

without any spoilers how do you know when you reach the center? does the game tell you or do you just know?

The fact there are never crystal resources under water is really damn disappointing.

There is almost no point to using the underwater oxygen mask. So many ocean planets with zero reason to explore beyond sight seeing. There should have been rarer elements deeper underwater

I think I might put down this game for a while. I dunno. I just feel bored in between the actual story missions. The base building aspect is gonna be neat as fuck, so I might just wait for that, but otherwise the shallow mechanics are getting me down.

When you do have to do things like finding a ship and repairing it, it's pretty decent. The game kinda forces you to deal with the harshness of the worlds, or craft the appropriate things. But if I'm just walking around looking at shit, I don't feel like I'm having all that much fun I guess.

I thought I could get by on trying to roleplay, but being a pirate is balls and doesn't have much of an incentive. Being a trader is ten times better, and also ten times more boring. I'd be open to tips on making this game more fun, all that being said.

There was a GIF of it so it was something in-game. Would be a shame if it was cut

I don't think being near the center is going to change the intensity of the storms. I could see it upping the variation of the animals, though.

Man my starter system...planets must be pretty far from their sun. All 3 have been cold. Third one, is a verdant green though, with lots of trees that look like pine trees. Probably should've named it Noel or something, but went with Tefnut since it looks like its got some significant bodies of water yet is devoid of life on the surface aside from ALOT of plants.

So I found a +3 lifesupport mod and it didn't show up anywhere. Now I know why, that's pretty annoying to be honest. Like REALLY annoying.

Thoughts on the platinum in this?

It seems like it might be alright, just gonna take a while. From what I can tell there's no trophy for reaching the center of the universe or anything. Is there a trophy guide out there?

Anyway, I'm supposed to go grab some warp recipes, and it's making me bust into a factory on this toxic radioactive wonderland. Fuck. I don't know if everyone gets this factory job for this tutorial quest, but not looking forward to fighting off Sentinels while being irradiated. Here goes nothin.

Took me a minute to figure out I had to use the blaster to destroy the door and not the mining laser, but I got in...barely. Anyway, hopped around to several question marks, learned more words, and found a crashed ship that only had one more slot. Left it. This system is Korvax, funny seeing them after all the previews. I assumed that it was going to be a Gex faction area for many warps. Are factions not in the game? Or do they open up that game system later on? I haven't heard anyone talk about them.

Anyway, I left that sludgy planet and made a beeline for the space station, but while trying to figure out which side was the entrance I got scanned by pirates and attacked by four ships. That was my first combat experience and I didn't last long. I'm usually pretty good at dogfighting but the controls felt really awkward and the inventory shield management while trying to fly is probably up there with one of the worst design decisions I've seen in a game. Ended up reverting to the last save and made it in the station this time. Leaving town for a couple days so that'll have to do. I'm going to have to make some serious ship upgrades because I'm an easy target right now.

I heard breaking and letting them fly past you while smacking them with the mining laser works. At least that did for me.

And the faction you get is randomized. I got the Kraft Punk Boyz after five jumps, but the Gex were all too common (nasty little dudes, who thought farting would be a good form of communication?!).

Ive been on two planets with snow storms and one with poisonous rain.

So is it smarter to focus on the centre of the galaxy quest or Atlas stuff first.
Every time I open up my star map I'm torn inbetween the two, in addition to just jumping to a random star system :P

How is most of Gaf playing?

So no one has seen tornadoes or lightning storms? Well that's disappointing. Another thing cut?

Hopefully they can patch in these things they promised.

I am just going with the cosmic winds. I have a feeling about a system then I go there. I plan on playing this game for a long time, the center can wait. I was even tempted to go as far from the center as possible...

I dunno, the game may be incredibly dull or shallow as a puddle, but landing in the space station the first time, it certainly does some things incredibly right. I can see myself playing this game for a long time, just in very short occasional bursts.

Well, you get wind storms, so I'm assuming that's their version. As for lightning storms, I wonder what biome would even have that.

I'm still angry about the animals not interacting more. One interview had him saying they shot down a bird and it landed in the water, with a fish coming up and eating that dead body. I love shit like that :(
