No Man's Sky |OT| Hello Worlds.

I just got the underwater breather Theta version. Testing it out, I can effectively stay underwater infinitely now.

Some of the underwater environments in this game are phenomenal, and more impressive than the land itself. I really wasn't expecting them to put that effort into undersea plants and terrain.

I need to make one of those breathers.

Before I found this one, I only had the Sigma breather, and it basically lasted all of 30 seconds before needing an oxide refill, rendering it basically useless to me.

I think that's the universal symbol meaning "this requires resources." Doesn't it show up when you need to give an alien resources before they're willing to chat, as well?

Oh, must be a different symbol than I'm thinking of, neat.
When you feed a creature, occasionally it'll wonder off and find rare stuff for you. When it's doing so a magnifying glass will appear over its head.

Edit: Haha you answered above. Yeah it's a neat little feature. Found tons of stuff doing that and you can feed multiple creatures at once!

Cool, I actually haven't had that kind of reaction yet. I've had some become my pet and some poop stuff for me to collect.

edit: re: multiple creatures at once, I wonder if that's the case for "pet mode" creatures. Gotta try it. I had this lil guy following me for miles, if I could've had a squad of them....

When you feed a creature, what does the magnifying glass symbol mean?

'look over here!'

funny story with that - I fed a small red, cat/lizard *thing*. He points me to one of those tentacle plants that swipe at you if you get too close in a 'kill this thing' manner. I kill it and it poops out some zinc. pretty neat

Ah, okay, I've just ignored it in the past. My bad.
Yeah it's a cool feature. They either shit stuff out, find stuff or follow you about.

I'm so glad I never saw that trailer and was only altered to this game by the online controversy (yes, they sold at least one copy by lying about MP, lol).

That is really, really far from what the actual game turned out to be like. God damn I'd be pissed.

That video is fucking hilarious but let's not act like you can't get a lot closer to the trailer than that barren shit colored world and a lone oddity bumbling about.

Of course, the clip is edited to be funny. I've had some stunning planets - the game is gorgeous and I love it. The visuals and the planets are the strength of the game. Finding a new lush world and finding a beach to walk on and take pictures is literally 100% of my motivation, and has had me put in 40+ hours so far.

But the wildlife as depicted in that trailer do not look, act or animate like that in the final game. That's undeniable. They nailed the planet stuff, mostly. The wildlife? It's an interesting curio, but it's imperfectly done. Probably one of the more disappointing aspects to the game.

I've been taking lots of screenshots of my journey so far. I find just documenting the different worlds in images to be one of the most fun things of playing the game. I hope they incorporate some sort of in game mechanic down the road that has players taking pictures and sharing them in game somehow.

Question about Atlas stations. I was following a waypoint but went through a black hole in the meantime. Does this mean that waypoint is guiding me to the same station as before the black hole?

Because that would mean backtracking an insane distance....

Any other way to find these stations?

hmpf, can't seem to find another atlas station or space anomaly or black hole. Just been jumping around hoping to stumble on something :/

I've been meaning to ask and always forget....what are the grid lines around some objects? Don't recall that being explained in the game or maybe I missed it

I heard that Space Anomaly stations are on some sort of ticker to where they pop up after you do a specific amount of activities on a planet.

I don't think merely warp jumping into different systems will find you one.

That's fair. I'd certainly say that I've been wowed by wildlife the least out of the procedurally generated content, though it has had some moments.

QoL stuff I want/expect over time:

  • A quickbar: basically hold a button (maybe D-pad left) and point the right stick to select and apply items/resources you've slotted in without accessing the main inventory. Recharging your Hazard prot with Zinc or shield items; recharging your ship deflectors with Iron/Titanium, your thrusters with Plutonium, pulse with Thamium-9, whatever you configure. Separate bars for on foot/in ship. This will require a cooldown, to prevent brute-forcing situations that exceed your capabilities.
  • A button to quickly take a HUD-less pic, or even a full-fledged photo mode or in-game camera item with photo upload for units. Turning the HUD off on PC is magnificent, and a number of activities can actually be played smoothly with no HUD if you know what you're doing- but this is still a necessary feature. Taking pics has been one of the best aspects of the experience for me already, and looking back over my collection I really have the sense of adventuring through the universe.
  • On the discoveries page, hold X on a system to open the galactic map with it selected. Hold X on a planet to place a waypoint on that planet. Manually placed waypoints on planets can be given different colored/shaped icons for easy recognition, and can be removed from anywhere.
  • The ability to view a rotateable 3D model of planetary discoveries (flora and fauna), and add additional notes to uploaded discoveries (this planet has x resource available, there are many Gek knowledge stones on this planet, this creature will poop emeril, etc.)

The thing is, when you get a crap or barren planet, well, those exist. You process it, get some minerals, move on. It's part of the journey. When you find a good one? You break your share button and lose yourself in the visuals.

With the animals? On the rare occasion you see a good, well-put-together or original one it adds to the scenery. But when you see poorly animating ones milling around not really interacting with each other - that just pulls you out of the game. It's not realistic, it just looks like procedural generation gone wrong. That's a problem the planets' terrain and plantlife don't seem to have.

QoL stuff I want/expect over time:
I agree with most of that stuff but the number one needed feature is an ability to manage markers and waypoints. If you get shown buildings you don't want to visit your screen can become a clusterfuck of symbols very quickly. The fact that you have to visit those buildings to make that mark go away is asinine.

It's to the point that I've left multiple systems before I wanted to simply because I needed to reset the screen of a ton of markers.

Yeah, both manually placed waypoints and auto-generated markers should be removeable from anywhere somehow. Maybe placing your cursor/crosshair over them and holding a button.

I'm having a problem with my game, perhaps someone can offer pointers. I'm on ps4, chose atlas path and did up to where you see the first atlas monolith I think. I know I'm supposed to find some
anomaly
but I cannot locate this anywhere. Missions no longer pop up on the bottom right other than basic things like scanning or crafting. Any ideas on how to get back on track?

Follow the path toward the center a bit, scan for it in each system you visit.

I would like them to ingegrate:

A random quest algorithm.

Like give NPC's quest a la: Kill these, bring me these or hunt down these pirates that killed my brother.

And give us upgrades, tools or even ships as reward.
