I had to give up on this one planet that had eight creatures on it! I had just one more to find, but for the life of me, that fucker would not show up. I finally left that system and entered a new one, then found a pretty planet that was fun to explore, and got all of the creatures, which completed the milestone. Thank god I don't have to worry about that one anymore. I have just one more to get, the warping one. I'm at Milestone 7, so 3 more to go.

I hadn't played the game in a few weeks, since I was playing some other stuff and taking a break. It was fun getting back into the game and roaming around. The system I'm in now has six planets, and I really just enjoy seeing what I find in the next star systems.

I'm sad that all of the schadenfreude from people that actually don't give a shit about the game will probably rob us of some more content patches. I can imagine Hello Games feels awful and are completely demoralized. This whole "drama" has been fucking embarrassing to behold.

That "hacked" tweet made me have more sympathy for their situation. I remember them getting death threats for that other delay. All I can say now is I hope they keep working on it. When its really finished I'll go back to it. Still doesn't explain the $60 price tag, but at least its understandable now.

For me, it was worth the $60. Even so, games drop in price. It's not going to be $60 forever, and it's not vital to get a game the day it comes out. I will never understand the complaints about game prices when that shit is almost always changing. It was $60 because it was $60. It was in development for, what, four years, and Sean Murray mortgaged his house for it. There was no guarantee the game would sell as well as it did, so I imagine the suits slapped it with a $60 price tag, so that if it even sold 200k, it would recoup development costs and keep Hello Games functional.

I had followed this game since its announcement, and I think my expectations were tempered when I learned that A) It was from the Joe Danger studio, and B) They are a 12 person team. I was actually pretty doubtful after learning that, but over the years, and seeing the various walkthroughs and interviews, I became optimistic for the game. I'm still impressed that such a small team managed to pull off what they did, and I had hoped that after launch, they'd be able to add more content and polish. I didn't expect there to be such a fallout from consumers. Maybe it's because the game was exactly what I expected it to be. After the few hours of first looks and walkthroughs, I knew what I was getting in to. I don't know how many hours I've sunk into the game, but I feel like it wasn't wasted, and was worth my money. I always felt that Sean Murray was kind of an awkward, introverted guy, and it's obvious when someone not trained in PR is forced to get out there in the limelight. It's not like Indie Developers can afford well oiled PR machines, and it's clear that Sony thought the messaging about the game was getting through to consumers. I feel like Sony's involvement also increased expectations in consumers. I imagine some people thought they had a bigger hand in the development of the game than they did. It was always going to be a 12-20 man project.

I think Sean sold his house to start Hello Games, not for NMS. But he did say in his last public interview that the studio had gone into debt, so they probably took out bank loans or something. That's why I suspect financial pressure played a role in making them push out the game in the state it was. If it turns out that Sean also had pressure from Sony to release before the holidays, I think that would put a much different light on things. Regardless, I don't appreciate how Sony treated them publicly after the backlash started.

I think most of us from the preview threads knew it would be an indie-scale game with a $60 price tag. The game had enough potential with free updates, along with the sheer audacity of Sean's vision, to make that price palatable. But I think there's only a few people that would disagree that it needed more time in the oven. Just putting aside missing/janky features, it was the crashiest game I've ever played on a console, and to me crashes on a game console are unacceptable. It puts Sony's cert process in a pretty negative light, and Sony's QA team was the QA, so it certainly makes Sony's involvement in this whole thing a bit suspect.

I really hope Hello haven't given up on the game. I still want to see where it can go. And just from an empathetic perspective, I want Sean and the team to get a win and regain some positive rep so they can move forward both professionally and personally.

if I had to bet I'd bet the game never gets a substantial update. They already made all the money they're going to make. The game is toxic. The steam page has record negative reviews.

And deservedly so (just to be clear I don't think personal threats against the devs are appropriate, but the game receiving scrutiny and the devs having their claims about the game scrutinized are deserved).

I just completed my first planet, only because one of the anomaly guys (Nada?) wanted upload information from a completed planet. And I didn't even get anything solid in return.

That part has probably been the most tedious part for me. Everything else has been pretty fun, but finding animals kind of hasn't. Only even just realised the easy way of finding animals... looking through the scanner thing, finding a flashing dot and hoping it's something you haven't discovered before.

Still need to find a damn AtlasPass v2/v3 as well. That's kind of annoying.

Nah. What else are they going to be doing? They have more to gain by trying to rebuild the game's reputation by making it incredible than just dumping it and losing whatever potential sales they could have in their next game. Even though it didn't work out for Evo Studios (and their subsequent closure) with the poorly-released Driveclub, they gave it an incredible amount of support and community interaction to actually earn respect from the community and press.

No reason the same can't/won't happen with HG and NMS.

You're looking at it from a fans' perspective. From their perspective, tons of people bought the game, said nothing, and still own it. They might as well keep developing for those people. If they do a good enough job, perhaps they'll even pull in a few more sales.

It doesn't seem too likely to me either but at the same time it doesn't seem likely they'd just pack it in. Sources have said they are still working, too.

I definitely agree that it was pathetic how Sony pretty much threw them under the bus after the backlash happened. I do agree that the game needed more time in the oven. Personally, I've only had the game crash a handful of times, and after hours and hours of gameplay. I was one of the lucky people that didn't encounter a ton of crashes. My wife had more crashes than I did. I had hoped that there would be more patches to address issues that people were experiencing, but I feel like a lot of that went down the drain after the backlash and Hello Games went dark. I honestly can't blame them. They're an indie dev. It's not like they're a Capcom or Konami, that are large companies that can weather a bad release or two. An indie dev doesn't have that luxury, as they often live and die by a single title. I'd hate for Hello Games to go under because of No Man's Sky. I never played Joe Danger (although I think I have one of them due to PS Plus), but I really like No Man's Sky, and hoped that it would be a title that would put them on the map and give them better resources/support to grow it into a franchise.

The planet scanning one is so frustrating, especially when you get down to the last creature on a planet, and it refuses to spawn. My usual method was to find a planet that was gorgeous and lush, and just a joy to look at, so that wandering it for hours to find that last creature isn't a pain. I made the mistake of trying to 100% a planet that was boring and uninteresting to look at, and I stuck with it and completed it. After that, I decided to make sure I only attempted to 100% pretty planet. XD I'm also still trying to get Atlas Pass V2 or 3. I'll get there eventually, I'm sure. I'm still warping from system to system and claiming planets. Eventually I'll come across it.

Almost spoke too soon, finally got me a v2 AtlasPass. I read somewhere you can get it from defusing the alarms on (only Korvax?) colonial outposts. That's what happened with mine, bit must've visited close to 50 before I got it.

Agreed on the animal finding thing too, although it can be easier to find that flashing white dot on planets that five have a lot of flora (aka the paradise planets).

Finally started playing again after a couple months. I forgot how much I enjoyed just looking and searching and "filming".

My footage backlog is still a couple months behind but I've put out 4 more of my little transmission vids today (XIV-XVII). I'm trying to catch up to my latest planets.

In the future, I may make each video contain multiple planets from one system. I know there are some planets I didn't take much footage from but still would like to share.

There's definitely some cool sights to see in the game and I've always said that what they've accomplished with planet generation is neat. It just really sparks your imagination in kind of a regretful way though because it makes you think of what might have been if they spent way more time developing it so it could be more like what they pitched.

I've gotta say it's pretty astonishing and flatout pathetic to blame any missing content updates on the backlash HG deservedly received for their borderline scam. If updates get actually cancelled, blame it on the extremely low player numbers that don't warrant updates and this is SOLELY on HG for not delivering a better, more engaging game.

I will now leave you alone again in your NMS defense bubble.

PS: Bob Ross didn't deserve this harsh treatment.

You use very inflammatory language when you could simply have said, "I don't like it and think there should have been more content."

"NMS defense bubble"? If people like something they are allowed to defend it if they wish.

It's very odd. I understand defending something you like or love, but going out of your way to attack something... well I think it says more about the person lashing out than what they're lashing out at.

Yeah, I justed wanted to pop in to see what people are discussing, any new features or mods or whatever. But then I see people people blaming the lack of updates on the critics instead of HG which I thought was incredibly pathetic. It again showed the lengths that some people go to to defend the game and studio they are currently emotionally attached to. And NMS was a really bad case of that.

Poor, bare-footed indie-dev!

You'll find plenty of disappointed people in here if they don't produce any new content, but to dismiss the vicious hatred that has been directed at them as contributory to what they do next is ridiculous.

We know they're still working on content. Only a few days ago the Hello Games Twitter was hacked, they took back control and tweeted, "back to work!"

There may have been single cases of vicious hate, the death threats etc. You always get a couple of stupid individuals like that. With this game these things occurred even before release because I don't know, the game seems to have attracted some overly emotional souls.

Throwing these together with the avalanche of warranted criticism for both the game itself and for Murray's behavior is downright disengenuous, however. Not even calling Murray out for lying qualifies as "vicious hate". That's simply a fact. The whole backlash is on HG and Murray and seeing some fans of the game and the studio trying to discredit the critics is just sad.

I got the game on trade credit, did Atlas Path which was fun I admit. Grinding a planet full of rare items in caves for a few million $$ was fun to max out my jet pack as well. Started towards center and said "hell no." No way I could do that. Traded in the game after that.

If I believed the game would get a worthy content update and new play features I would have held onto it. And now here we are. If it gets anything it is still 6 months out. So if it ends up being something fantastic, I'll gladly pick the game up again for no more than $10-15.

What the what?

I would've said it's more pathetic to drive-by in a thread that's somewhat removed from discussing the developers practices (given the other numerous threads discussing the topic) and bring up points that are already well covered elsewhere.

I brought it up because of the denial and distortion that is still on display here. Discuss the game? Fine (that's what I actually looked for in this thread). Blame HG's failings on the critics and discrediting the critics? Nope, can't let that stand unanswered.

There were more than a few cases of hate directed towards the studio - let's not wash away what happened around release. Even now they're continuously accused of deliberately making false promises and running away with the money they've made. To their island made of Bentleys.

Very few people in here will defend them without exception. The fans of the game will acknowledge the faults of the game and talk about the things that they want to see. It's not the warranted criticism I have a problem with - frankly unwarranted criticism is acceptable (if frustrating) if it's delivered in a way that a rational human being would deliver it.

I have no investment in the studio (not a fan of their other output) and this will be nowhere near my game of the year list even though I play a very small amount of games, but I will never understand what they've had to go through and, unlike some it seems, I would completely understand if they thought "fuck this" and took the money to other projects between the team. I hope that's not true and I'm almost positive it's not true.

I also strongly suspect that whatever they reveal will be tarnished and attacked even if it fixes literally every criticism that's been levelled at them.

You could, because there are numerous threads devoted entirely to discussing the behind the scenes goings on at HG/NMS. I'm sure the Doom OT didn't constantly have the game's development woes popping up. Or the fact that no pre-release copies were given to reviewers, something as equally as relevant to the game as what you've needlessly brought up in this thread again.

I'm happy to engage in those particular discussions, no doubt you've seen me rear my head in those other threads. But at risk of this one being called a "bubble" and it's contributors labeled "in denial", here is just not the place for it.

Hey y'all, I have a post that's actually about the game! So I fired up NMS last night after a couple weeks away from it because I have a cold and this a good chill game for that. It opened in a swirling, red grass covered island world I had apparently saved at and got that familiar "wow" feeling this game can give.

For those that have completed the Atlas Path:
do you really have to take the 10 stones all the way to the center of the galaxy to finish it? And do I have to "stay on the path" by following Atlas Interface to Atlas Interface, or can I just head straight for the center?

Nope! You just collect the stones as normal, and hand them in at the last anomaly you go to.
I think there are two kinds of end games here, one of which is the atlas path, the other is the centre of the galaxy. Both are independent of each other, though if you complete the atlas path, black holes (which make getting to the centre quicker) appear automatically when warping.

Some people get way too attached to games. I'll never understand the point of defending a piece of software when you had absolutely nothing to do with its development. To each their own I guess.

As if the dozen of other threads weren't enough.
We're months after release and we're discussing the game. We have discussed the flow of the game , the patches , the secrets , the co-ordinate system , the pc mods and so on.

But you felt free to grace ourselves with your insight about our supposed denial.

You sure told us !!

You can make a thread about our denial if you want . I'm sure the usual suspects will be there to populate it along to the usual gifs

No because we heretical scum must continue to be reminded about the awful vileness of that nefarious, moustache twirling arch-villain Sean and his cackling cohort of demonic baby sacrificing minions until we agree with all of these well meaning good Samaritans who constantly feel the need to remind those of us actually enjoying the game that we must obviously be mentally disabled, insane, ignorant, or had been tricked by the very spawn of Satan himself.

The all-powerful Internet has thus revealed to us its wonderful knowledge of the wicked ways of Hello Games through these beneficent trolls and their wise shitposts.

Do not question the wisdom of the Internet, mere mortal, for that way lies insanity... or at least more shitposts anyway.

I found the most easy planet to get money. A lot of sac venom. Just parked outside of a trade hub e keep getting 500k every fast trip. And has Albumen Pearl on the caves. Other element with no use in crafting.

I already plat and did and completed the atlas path. But the lack of challenge or purpose make the perfect relax game.

I've been on many "Hostile" Sentinel planets, but tonight I landed on one that was listed as having "Frenzied" Sentinels. As soon as I landed and got out of my ship, a nearby Sentinel let out what I can only describe as a robotic scream and made a beeline for me.

Needless to say, I did not spend long surveying that planet.

I think this game deserves criticism, and think the middling scores it got are generally fair. I personally love this game despite its faults. But what gets to me is that most of the non-media people complaining (like here or reddit) sound like horrible people. The righteous indignation I read over this game makes me wonder what some peoples' day-to-day lives are like, and what series of misfortunes led them to be so rotten.

Those planets almost always have tons of some valuable item, like gravitino balls. If you land at a trading post on a planet like that, you can get so much money. I always had more fun on these planets because it adds a little tension if you're bored of the quiet roaming in most of the game. It's definitely more fun than trading back and forth at a space station.

Yeah, I had that thought as well, but I searched around and couldn't find any obvious caves on that planet. Plus, my suit doesn't have much room left because of the 10 Atlas Stones I'm lugging around right now.

It's been a bit over two months since the last NMS development update. It would be nice if Sean would at least give us a general update on what features they're working on.

I finally traded in my copy for IW+MWR... I enjoyed what i played, but it soon became way too repetitive for my taste.
I mean, resource gathering was tedious enough, especially with that small inventory!
All the creatures seemed to be slight variations of the same 20 base models or so... And their sounds... :/
Planets had more variety, but could have been so much more!
Maybe they should have cranked up a bit the randomization slider, even at the risk of obtaining absurd results.
I plan on jumping back in when (if ever) more substantial updates come out.
Unfortunately I see no point in base building (one of the promised feature), not if it is not supported by meaningful gameplay mechanics (eg. necessity to protect from harsh environments or aggressive lifeforms... and more complex like resource production/crafting) - I feel it won't be that interesting in the end...
They should add a free mode as well, letting people explore without having to care about resources and such.
Right now it's a 6/10 for me, not that you asked ;)

I think there's such huge potential.. For everything terrible I've said about this game -- because as a $60 retail game I do think it's abysmal -- but there's just so much potential for what could be built within this framework.

The game wasn't only missing a sense of purpose but a sense of danger. There ought to be some real risk/reward -- dangerous places to go but with better rewards. That kind of stuff.

A universe without danger falls flat. You need danger.

Sadly I don't think they'll be iterating on it. The devs are MIA.
