No Man's Sky pre-orders start March 3rd, $59.99

Space shooter fans who like the exploration and/or action, but not the time investment of a sim must be very happy this year

For the straight-up arcadey combat fan, they got Everspace. And for exploration, trading, discovery (and combat), they got No Man's Sky. And both are colorful and vibrant and look gorgeous

Oh wow, thanks for bringing up Everspace. I never saw this before. Not trying to derail the thread but I'm looking up info on it now, is it PC only? EDIT: JUST SAW YOUR POST ON THE LAST PAGE.

I think NMS will be a great game, I wish there was interaction with other players/gaffers.

Giant Bomb has an article called "Thirty Minutes with No Man's Sky" going up tomorrow morning (March 3) accompanied by a video called "Four Questions About No Man's Sky". Maybe we'll get some new info.

But the game isn't about that. It's in the vein of Journey or even Demons Souls, where the appearance of another player is this unexpected unpredictable occurance. Being able to team with friends and parties goes against the whole "lone explorer in the galaxy" vibe the game is going for

It's not even like those games. It's more like two non-collision rocks passing by and that's it. There is no actual occurence, since you won't be able to tell NPC from player and there is no possibility of actual interaction. It's multiplayer with all players in very fuzzy boxes surrounded by other empty fuzzy boxes. The vibe they are going for, in my opinion, sucks and wastes some of the game's potential. It won't feel lonely anyway with NPCs and trade establishments around. It'll be quite a bit like Elite dangerous, solo mode. A waste of time and money on a pseudo-multiplayer feature that, from what we know, doesn't amount to anything.

That's one of the reasons I refuse to put $60 down. It feels like a tease, but not a good one.

That's why I don't really think it will be all that hard to come across random people. Online multiplayer takes too many resources to implement in a game just so 1% of players can actually find someone. I feel like there will be certain elements that can naturally kind of funnel you to areas where other players might be. Stars twinkling on the galactic map (which indicates that someone else is making a discovery in a star system) would help one get close to other people if they wanted to. Theoretically, the space station in each star system should be the central/common area to visit, so there could be better chances that you run into someone there. Maybe there are more elements we don't know about that would support your efforts to come across a player.

Or maybe there's not and he just really likes the idea that it's possible to come across someone else, but almost impossibly unlikely too. Either way, those resources wont be wasted, because they'll probably use it to bring a more traditional multiplayer sometime down the line. For launch though, this is how he wants the game to be I guess. I can respect that.

And I think things might feel lonely for you once you realize there are no actual physical NPC's anywhere (no one piloting ships, no "shopkeeper", etc). Also I'm pretty sure Sean said that you can be completely alone in a star system.

Do we know if two players meet, can they travel together, go to the same planet, and explore together?

They can but there's no real party system supporting that as far as we know. Meaning it will probably be really easy to lose track of that person when trying to travel together.

The way Sean explained it, you constantly have a multiplayer lobby surrounding you, that can accommodate a few people. So when they come in your proximity, they load in and appear.

But they will have no name, and may not even be obvious that they're a human player. Unless they act erratically.

Lemme try and find a source.

EDIT: BOOM
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...ng-of-no-man-s-sky-as-a-multiplayer-game.aspx

It seems like it's a lot of work to incorporate multiplayer with a high chance that it won't even happen.
The only answer that I can think of for this is a really technical one. If we were to make a game where we synchronized every player, what they were doing with every other player, then that would be impossible and no one has ever done that. What we can do is, like many games that you have at the moment, where you are flying around with an open lobby. People are coming into that lobby and leaving it – like if you play Watch Dogs or something like that. Effectively, we have players joining your discrete space. We're not trying to make an MMO where you can play with literally 60,000 people on screen. We handle the case like where other people can fly past in your game or that you can bump into other players in the game.

But that's okay for us because it will never happen. I guess the whole of the entire community could organize to go to one specific spot and then they would find that they weren't all there at the same time. That would be ridiculous.

We still don't know if it will be P2P or server-hosted multiplayer, and if they're going to geofence Atlas cataloging and matchmaking servers for different regions, or if we're all going to be in the same universe for matchmaking purposes. We also don't know how much they're going to sync between players. Will it be destruction? Animals? Everything?

Will we be able to damage other players? If a troll player happens to get the jump on another player, can they continue trolling them by blowing up their ship and repeatedly killing them when they respawn on the planet?

This is the best answer so far I think: https://youtu.be/_g15ANx5T7s?t=6m4s

Wonder if there's a specific time the embargo lifts, given that it's already 3/3 on the East Coast here in the U.S. ? Giant Bomb's stuff goes up at 8:00AM PST so it could be then but that's also typical of GB; they've never been a "gotta get dem clicks first!" type of operation...

Good lord the one on the left (Everspace) looks awesome. Imagine that in VR.

So, I guess pre-orders are not the only thing No Man's Sky related thing happening. Perhaps there's also some sort of embargo ending. Tomorrow/later today on Giant Bomb, they have a video and an article about the game. I wonder if other sites will have stuff, too.

Sorry if this was already addressed earlier in the thread but I'm curious what GAF thinks about it being a "potential" flagship PSVR game and it's being released on June 21st! (according to amazon emails)

So take that with a grain of salt but for the sake of argument lets say it does release in June. Does it stand to reason that PSVR will also come to market then? Or are some people thinking they're just going to release a "bare bones" full space sim but no PSVR for you boys yet....I tend to think where there's smoke there's fire but maybe It's my otherworldly exploding anticipation for this game AND PSVR!

OH to have them both in my hand in only 3 months mmmmmm

Most assuredly. GB's stuff goes up at 8. Dunno if that's the specific time when the embargo lifts or if it's just a general "Midnight [PST?] 3/3"

Their schedule adjusts to the user's time zone. The NMS stuff is going up at 11AM my time. Which means, it would be 8:00AM Pacific.

Sure, but if Sony is calling the shots on the embargo time, I'd imagine they'd key it to at least coincide with business hours in San Mateo, so 8AM PST would make sense.

Honestly, I'm just being impatient lol Just got home from work, whiskey in hand, and chomping at the bit to see some more NMS footage and to hear what people-- particularly those that have been fairly skeptical about it in the past-- have to say about their limited time with it.

Will wait for player feedback, I loved Elite Dangerous, but did not have the time to invest in it long term (bought a decent flight stick) and still not played the Horizons part even though I bought it.

My only concern is the amount of time I need to sink into a title such as this. Does look amazing

Sorry for the double, but it wouldn't have gotten bumped with just an edit.

Some potential new stuff re: trading and an alien race that might get validated later today coming in from Cobra TV's YT channel, who has been on. point. regarding the latest NMS information-- and rumors-- since its reveal.

Ah bugger it, just clicked and broke my blackout! Here's some of the info in text.

Disclaimers: Info is unofficial, no longer online, translated from German, read by Cobra, and transcribed by an excited imbecile. So it's a little patchy.

  • Cultures using animals and robots as workers
  • Robots that worship the sun - somehow related to missions (although it's also mentioned that Sean Murray says he doesn't like fetch quests)
  • Planet resources affect flora evolution, thus fauna evolution
  • Resource gathering can be done on behalf of other intelligent life for trading purposes
  • Inscriptions in some areas allow you to learn language, improving your trade abilities with alien species ("Corvaks" [?] named).
  • Some resource areas guarded by robots and alarmed. Example given: Location of crystals for a sniper rifle.
  • There are animals that can hunt you down from across the planet.
  • "Whole folks" (populations) on planets.
  • You can form alliances with animals for protection.

Still waiting to see multiplayer in action. Something seems fishy...

No beta for something as massive as this? I dunno man... There are betas for MUCH smaller games.

My hunch tells me this "multi player" is really just an asynchronous online mode where everyone has an effect on the same universe, but we really don't interact with each other. Even if we can "see" each other, it won't be live. It will be a sort of ghost like system. Maybe like bloodborne's blood echo system.

There is no multiplayer in the way I think you mean. You won't be teaming up and roaming with buds. You may run into people, although the odds of that are said to be very low (increasing as you get closer to the centre of the universe).

Your last paragraph is pretty well in the ballpark, except that you can interact... except we can't expect it to be frequent. So if you're interested in forming a space squad, turn and flee now!

God damn, I need that! Any chance this might make it to psvr?

I think it was PC only initially, up until Microsoft decided to strike a deal with them and bring this to Xbox One. They had PS4 and XB1 as stretch goals but they didn't meet it. Don't think there's PS4 version being made unless they get some miraculous funding. This could be Microsoft's No Man's Sky.

From what I heard the multiplayer in this game is solely that if somebody visited a planet before there will be a sign that says so. The only other multiplayer component is that the economy is influenced by every player. So if everybody buys the same stuff prices will go up.

Found this:

When asked how much of the game is multiplayer, Sean Murray said, “yeah, you trade with the galactic economy and stuff like that. Erm, like, we really, like, very careful to downplay any multiplayer aspects and in some I just feel like saying there is none, forget about multiplayer” before going on to explain that “it’s not an MMO. It’s not a game you sit down and play with your friends. There are loads of games that do that and they’re way better at it than us. If you want a death match, No Man’s Sky is not for you.”

From end of 2015. It's basically saying there is no multiplayer.

Baffled by how many people think it will be easy to bump in to another person when everyone starts at different points in the galaxy.

Even in Elite as soon as you fly 10-15 systems away from the start point you feel very isolated and alone. It's extraordinarily large, if you manage to even find someone elses location it could take you days to get there and meet.

Imagine if they stick a co-op trophy in there for shits and giggles/ultimate trolls.

Corvax, you say? :)

Eagerly awaiting the news, though I'm not really expecting a lot of new info, but maybe they'll actually show some of the specific systems and menus.

Woah WOAH woah. "NO" MULTIPLAYER???! holy shit.

Oh man that multiplayer thing is a bummer, I don't like pvp stuff but I really wanted to go exploring with my friends :(

Me either. I don't like pvp, but I just wanted to tag team this with my bro is all.

Holy. Fuck. I am so disappointed. Wow.

there is multiplayer

you can see and reach your friends... but, hey...

it can take something like 1+ real life year to reach them

I mean, if you followed this game, you should know already theres no coop, it has been know for years.
Yeah, it'd be a fucking nightmare anyway.

"Excuse me for 2 billion years dear PSN friends while I search a real sized galaxy for you".

Reread some interviews... they said it'd take billions of years to search every planet. Considering everyone starts of on a different planet, I wouldn't even be able to comprehend the odds of finding a friend.

...Well considering they said it takes 40-100 hours to get to the center of the starting galaxy, the furthest you would theoretically be from your friend wouldn't be that long.

Perhaps the problem (not just you, but in general) is making expectations and forming a vision of the game in your head that isn't supported by any known details about the game or info from the developer.

Not every game needs to to have multiplayer. In fact I think there are way too many multiplayer games.

Solo game like Zelda TP and no man sky will be a welcome break from playing games like Battlefront & PvZ GW 2.

But that's just me though.

depends how much you play

and you should consider the fact that you friend could be direct opposite to you,so 40-100 hours become 80-200
