I need help sorting through my backlog.
These are the games I've started that I haven't finished yet and have some progress in:
Assassins Creed Origins (maybe 15hrs in)
Atelier Ayesha (maybe 10hrs in)
Final Fantasy XV (maybe 12hrs in)
Darksiders 2 (I lost my save apparently so I may just drop this one completely unless people highly recommend) (I must have been at least 10hrs in)
Tales of Hearts (maybe 8 hrs in)
Witcher 3 Wild Hunt (Got to Skellige, probably 20+ hrs in)
God of War Ascension (7 chapters left?)
Disgaea 5 (3-4hrs in)

Tonight I introduced my wife to Super Monkey Ball Deluxe (PS2). She played through most of World 1 herself. Then I showed her Monkey Target (Version 1) and she was hooked. While it started as a 2P match, she quickly took over for my character in order to get in twice as many turns.
She is definitely hooked.

I've been really busy here lately so I've been a little lax in my weekly updates.
Witcher 3: I've been getting into a new playthrough of Witcher 3. I thought about going New Game+ but I felt like I would get lost after so long. I've just eft the first zone last night. One thing that surprised me is I went back to the original control mode, where in my first playthrough I switched to the new. I think for right now I'm liking the original better because it makes the movement look better and Roach sticks to the roads better.
Zelda Link to the Past:. I got to the point that has stopped me twice in the past, finding the maidens. I really like the first half of this game... I'm thinking I will probably stop playing it yet again.
Puzzle Bobble Snes:. This is just a funtime game. Not much to say about it.
Hitman 2:. I'm hopping in to do the elusive targets whenever I can. I've decided that I don't really like the elusive targets because it puts you in a situation where you don't really want to experiment and play with the target because you might lose it permanently. It's much safer to just pull out your silenced pistol and shoot the target from around the corner outside of the room.

If you're 6 hours into Resident Evil 0 you probably shouldn't have that much left to do in the game. So that one should be quick to finish off. Just might want to check a guide at your discretion as the final area may have spots that may have you going all the way back to the training area for certain items you left there which can be very tedious. I know they were trying to do something new with the whole "dropping items on the floor to grab anytime later" but really they should have just kept item boxes, the new system just added busy work in the end.

I fired up Brain Age 'cause I was in the mood for some thinky stuff. My last login was mid-2017 according to the game's calendar. I really like the speed-math game.
My daughter has torn through Rhythm Heaven Fever on the Wii. In the span of about 2 weeks (having never played the franchise before), she opened a new save file and is already to the sixth column. She is totally in love with the goofy charm of it all. So, I've been able to play a few songs here and there.
The ports of Psyvariar and R-Type should be shipping this summer, so I'll try those to see what they added compared to the previous ports of the games.
It's a relief to focus completely on my existing collection and to not really worry about the new games coming out this year. I may roll this idea into next year and avoid any 2020 titles and catch up on the enduring 2019 titles I missed.

Finally paid for a new game for the first time this year, preordered Samsho for PS4. 90 fucking dollars. At least that included the season pass.
I think tonight I am also going to cave and get MK11, my buddy who refuses to get into Street Fighter told me he'd buy it if I had it, so I'm going to pick it up just so I can have some local matches with my friends for a change.
Also might pick up a used copy of Tetris Effect, since Walmart already stopped carrying it and it's already going up in price on Amazon.

Recently finished up Final Fantasy X. I played it originally on release for the PS2, so a long time ago. I feel I enjoyed it a bit more this time around, I remember not being too thrilled, despite enjoying it on release as it was quite a shift away from the earlier releases as far as exploration and freedom of movement is concerned. I like the story and enjoy the battle system.
I’ve now moved on to Pillars of Eternity. I’m only a couple of hours into the game and I’m really enjoying the tone and gameplay systems. I’ve had it in my backlog for a long time but never even got around to even viewing the title screen. This seems to be the year of RPGs for me. I’m enjoying playing at a slower pace and the biggest frustration I’m having with gaming is choosing what to play next. I’ve been overwhelmed with my backlog of games for the longest time, but it’s nice to know I have some great games available now that I’m finally committed to giving games a fair chance.
I’ve now moved on to Pillars of Eternity. I’m only a couple of hours into the game and I’m really enjoying the tone and gameplay systems. I don't know much about what's releasing later in the year. Catherine will be hard for me to pass on as I really enjoyed that on PS3. I'll have to buy it. And play it on a hard difficulty this time around.

I'm starting a "2 for 1 challenge" this week and it will last through the end of this year or until I run out of games in my backlog. For each new game I want to buy this year, I will need to finish TWO games from my backlog. So if I want to buy Dragon Quest Builders 2 next month, I will need to finish 2 games before then. If I also want to buy Fire Emblem: Three Houses a couple weeks after that, I will need to finish another 2 games. System does not matter. I'll beat 2 PC games so I can buy a Switch game.
I think I'm gonna start out by finishing the games I'm closest to finishing. Looking at the games on my desktop, I can probably finish one tonight and another 2 this week. This will also help clear storage space because I plan to uninstall each game I finish.

Still have mad respect for everyone doing this challenge, but I totally blew it up this week with Cadence of Hyrule and Collection of Mana. Not to mention Bloodstained next week and Mario Maker 2 coming out in two weeks. And that's just stuff I'm interested in on the Switch. Had to put Witcher 3 on hold because I'll be away from my main PC for a while, but I've got a decent laptop to play some things.
I still haven't caved in buying stuff, but Outer World's pretty much guarantees that I will soon.
Just Cause 2. This is my favorite open world destruction game. I miss the wingsuit from 3, but everything else is better.
Tropico 2. I've been playing a level of this here and there. I played 3 and 4 a lot, and there's some huge differences about this game that I didn't expect, but it's really cool.
I still haven't caved in buying stuff, but Outer World's pretty much guarantees that I will soon.

I was going to get Tetris Effect while it was on sale, but I was apparently a few minutes late on getting the sale price by by the time I got home so I passed. That means i remain purchase-free in 2019 except for a few months of.Gamepass, PS Plus renewal, and the $11 I spent on Madden 19 a few weeks ago.
I got the U!timateEdition of Forza Horizon 4 last year so I am getting the new Lego content that just released.

I'm still in it, unless you count Xbox Gamepass, because I bought a year of live and upgraded to Gamepass for $1.
Still chipping away at The Witcher 3. I'm starting to wrap it up, gathering allies and finishing sidequests for the finale, but then I still have the DLC so another 30-40 hours to go or so. This is still an amazing game. I played it soon after launch and put nearly 200 hours in that playthrough. I'm moving much quicker this time, but I'm up to 80 now and haven't burned out yet.
Otherwise, I've been piddling here and there with a little Forza Horizon 4, and a little Rome Total War. I have an urge to play Luigi's Mansion 1 so I might get that going after Witcher 3.

Time for self-reflections, now that we are about 2/3rds through the year.
I have stuck with a handful of the same games since the beginning (BotW, DOJWL), while others have come and gone (Detective Pikachu, MH Stories, Terranigma, Sin & Punishment). I am beating games, but it feels incidental. I'm enjoying what I'm playing and I don't feel any drive to beat a game just for the sake of it. Dropping a game feels fine because there's always something else off the shelf to play.
Arcade games -- which I tended to pick up and drop in favor of investing into sp campaigns -- get a lot more mileage under this restriction. I am spending a lot more time chipping away at them instead of using them as filler. Perhaps related, when I do invest time into a meaty sp game, it feels a lot more satisfying to break away from the arcade-style format.
There are quite a few games I've added to my "want to buy" list for next year, but I'm also trimming quite a few games off that list as the year goes on. In a way, this challenge is helping me refine my tastes and to buy games that I really want instead of buying games that I think I'm supposed to like.
I won't be able to do this challenge next year, though, because new Guilty Gear.

in the self-reflection. So the theme this year seems to have been RPGs. The big ones have been the KOTOR games and Kingdom Come Deliverance (which by the way is amazing). I also found that I really enjoy more challenging skill-based combat, and taking the time to actually learn it. I had a crack at Dark Souls and where last time I bounced right off it, this time I had a good time. I put it to one side for KCD as that's consuming all my time right now but I can see the remainder of the year containing a fair bit of Dark Souls and maybe next year I'll pick up Sekiro and see what that does for me. I've also dabbled a bit with some of the fighters I bought for no good reason back in the day (Street Fighter 4 and 5) and I reckon with a bit of time I might finally get some basic idea of how to play them.
I'm enjoying really focusing on a small selection of games and like DDDP I've been able to drop games guilt-free knowing that I've fully explored them and not just dropped them because I was hopping to the next shiny thing. It's ok to not complete a game, so long as I give it a fair shot.
I'm also in the same boat of finding my wanted list shrinking - as you say this kind of activity helps to refine definitions of what one likes, but also with such a wonderful collection already in place I look at a new game and realise I already have a game in my library that will scratch that itch. Want to play The Outer Worlds? Why not give New Vegas a proper go at last? I'm hoping to continue down my RPG rabbit hole some more, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are looking at me and demanding my attention, and will no doubt get it in due course.
Another interesting area has been looking at old emulator games. It turns out that buying an 8bitdo genesis pad has been an absolute revelation in terms of doing better with the old 16-bit games, and it's revitalised my interest in them. The squishy imprecision of the xbox controller was holding me back more than I realised and I even wonder if I should use it for the likes of Spelunky and Super Meat Boy.
So, in short, lots learned, lots of fun had, and tastes refined.

I re-subbed to a month of EA Access for the Madden 20 trial. It's fun. I may buy it when the 10 hour trial is up.

Finally completed Breath of the Wild. Over 100 hours. Hyrule Castle was a very cool final dungeon and should've been the pattern for the other dungeons. Now I will wait until the sequel, play that, and decide from there which one I want to replay. I didn't find everything in the game (not even close), but I did complete a lot of the side-quests and optional Springs/dragons/etc.

As I already said, my time has been drastically reduced to to game development, but on vacation I had some time to finish some games:
Final Fantasy VI was a long-time project for me, but it is now done. I liked it, but not nearly as much as my favourite SNES RPGs Lufia 2 and Super Mario RPG. It had a nice story, fantastic presentation and nice battle sytem, but a lack of direction and I also did not love the world design as much as I could have.
Yoshi's Crafted World played well and had great level design, but the designers really did not know when to stop. All the superfluous collectibles that you have to run through the same levels again and again for are just junk. Also the game is too easy. For me, it's the second worst main line Yoshi game (better than Story, but worse than all Islands and Woolly).
Axiom Verge was a really nice Super Metroid clone, that lost a bit through its too obscure hiding places for many collectibles and a weaker final quarter, but overall a great game.

Final Fantasy VI was a long-time project for me, but it is now done. I liked it, but not nearly as much as my favourite SNES RPGs Lufia 2 and Super Mario RPG. It had a nice story, fantastic presentation and nice battle sytem, but a lack of direction and I also did not love the world design as much as I could have.
Yoshi's Crafted World played well and had great level design, but the designers really did not know when to stop. - No, it's just an expansion pack
- It's Monster Hunter World with Ice
- It's not a new game, unless you don't have MHW

Just wanted to share my respect for those who’ve made the effort this year.
I think I initially criticized the op due to re2 but I have to say, this year has been a DISASTER for me. Doubled my backlog at great expense and have only played like 1% of what I bought this year.
I’m holding off for the rest of the year.

For those of us who have built a magnificent collection that we call a backlog, choc-full of truly wondrous games, this approach gives a fantastic opportunity to explore gaming history. It's been a fantastic journey for me and I must thank
DunDunDunpachi
for giving me a push in this direction. I reckon I'll be doing it again next year as I've still got some absolute stone-cold classics to get through, and the stuff released in the meantime I can filter and when I'm ready I can play the true classics of this era and ignore the hyped trash. It's a win-win really.
