I'm hearing that tons of Canadians are crossing the border to buy tickets and can even purchase them online.

Honest question - how do you think the average American citizen would feel if a Canadian won such a huge jackpot?

I wouldn't care, because my chances of winning are same as theirs.

I personally don't feel that it would change me. I would still be me, but with the means to more freely do the things that I already enjoy doing.

$900 million will probably change you dude.

For better or worse.

I know for sure that I'd start with paying off my debt, but I wouldn't be sure where to go from there.

Donate, invest, try out some dream hobbies. One thing for sure is I'd probably find a way to start working again. Being in my mid 20s, I couldn't imagine not ever working another day in my life again.

Work? Man, screw that. Become a forever student, live the good life! :p

OK never played or bought before.

What do I do? Numbers are automatic or I get to choose?

There's a Powerball sheet you can fill out. Pencil in five numbers from the top portion (numbers range from 1 to 69) and then one number from the bottom portion (numbers range from 1 to 26). There are up to 5 plays on each sheet, but you can fill in just one if you want.

That's if you want to pick your own.

You can also just ask for a "quick play" or "quick pick" which essentially allows the computer to randomly select your numbers.

Good luck!

Work? Work for what? For who?
Learn stuff, experience stuff, get more hobbies. That's what's all about. Working? rofl no!

When do ticket sales end? I'm wondering if there's enough time for this to hit $1 billion before the drawing tonight.

Still have zero tickets. Probably not gonna change that.

So before I thought if you won you would choose the lump sum which is around 600 Million but maybe the annual payments don't sound bad if there is a possibility of getting close to that 900 Millio.

Anybody have a guess how much you would get in annual payments ?

They draw the numbers at 10:59 PM EST, so probably won't be hitting a billion in the amount of time left. Not unless by some freak occurrence no one wins tonight.

Buy a nice house and a nice car, set up a few trust funds so that i can draw an annuity to have spending money forever, plow the rest into a self-funded charitable organization, or try to buy my way into working for a major international charity, since that's what my new Master's degree is in (e.g., i'll donate $100 mil if you agree to make me your Director of X, or something.)

Ha-ha, seriously. Hell I'll probably be too lazy to invest for a while due to the fact I got a me $300 million lump sum and after taxes!

Im a simple man with simple tastes. Give them them new giant ass OLED tvs and time to finally play my videogames and chinese delivery and I'm good for a while.

The annuity payment schedule is an annually increasing rate (and is also dependent on your state lottery tax rate). Good state by state guide:

It must be noted while Maryland is the 2nd worse state to win the lottery in terms of taxes after New York, but its still one of the best to win the lottery simply because its one of the few states you can be anonymous from the get go.

Don't people sometimes get a lawyer and create an llc and accept the winnings through that to remain anonymous. I don't know how it all works but that's what I have always heard.

So let's say someone wins the lottery in Illinois tonight.

How would that person go about claiming the prize, getting a lawyer, setting up trust funds, etc

1) Look up a law office in the largest city near you.
2) Meet with that laywer. Tell them what happened. Make sure you've signed your ticket first; you don't need to show it to the lawyer to prove you won, they should just be happy that you're paying them to help.
3) Listen to what they say regarding claiming the ticket and trust fund establishment.

That's what I've heard but it seems a lot more comforting to collect the money without a lawyer middle men in between and still be anonymous; not needing to preplann all of it.

Seem people don't do it though when they could and get all plastered over the media for winning.

I would go anonymous if had the option but i don't see the big deal either way.

1. Delete all your social media accounts ASAP.
2. Change your number, maybe even get a new phone if you're that paranoid.
3. Relocate once you get the money.

Actually i would probably hide as soon as i won. To play it safe. People are crazy.

Not all (most?) states allow you to do that, winner's details must be publicized. I suppose 900M is all but confirmed now, insane if it actually breaks that one billion barrier too.

I consider learning to be work.

College at the moment feels like a third job for me right now. Even if I had that money I'd want to work towards something. I'm not talking about some shitty job and having a boss lol.

Could also use it as a launching point for some dream ideas.

Yes. 7-11 too.

Thanks, I mean, why not? Even if there were 1 million of me I'd still have shitty odds!

How do tickets work. Do you pick the numbers are are the dished out?

Is there a chance that this won't cash out tonight?

I kind of want to play, just to say I did.

The problem is income tax, you can't know how it'll change from year to year. If you are interested in maxing out your potential money, get lump sum if you think the highest income tax rates are going to rise over the next 30 years (and you trust investments on that lump sum having a good return).

Important thing to note: if you do win, 25% is held back for federal taxes...but the actual maximum federal income tax rate is like 39%, so make sure you save some money to pay the rest at the end of the year :)
