You can choose your own numbers or get a quick pick (random computer generated numbers). There is no guaranteed winner. Every ticket has the same 1 in 200 whatever million chance of winning. So everybody could be equally unlucky and the pot rolls over to 1.5+ billion or whatever next Wednesday

Speaking of taxes, doing this off of memory but before you think about giving away millions to friends and family (which is really a bad idea in the first place) you should know that beyond the exclusions rates you're responsible for without an agreement in place and the gift tax rate is 40%. This is a place where I'm sure more than a few lottery winners have gotten hit with a not so nice surprise. IIRC the current exemption amount is $14,000 per gift per person (so you could give 14K to say your brother and another 14K to his wife for a total of $28,000 without incurring taxes) with a lifetime exemption of somewhere over $5M currently but once you use of the lifetime exemption you've only got the other amount left.

Well I caved to my wife's requests to at least give it a shot and put in $4. I expect the most positive outcome of this to be the fact that I picked up a can of Surge at the convenience store where I bought the tickets. I didn't know that was back (again).
