'None of this makes any sense': Amazon's latest MMO import is a localization disaster

TLDR:
The translation is such a mess the story is barely understandable.

Amazon Games did not learn a lesson.

Throne and Liberty has all the tantalizing Korean MMO hallmarks: an indulgent character creator, flashy combat visuals, an array of guild-vs-guild systems. Unfortunately, it's filtered through the grimy lens of Amazon's localization cost-saving, which left Throne and Liberty feeling too incoherent for me to want to bother with any of it.

Before I could fiddle with Throne and Liberty's pile of character creation sliders, there was an introductory cutscene. As the camera swept across submerged, Atlantean ruins, a narrator told me there's a star—which might be a stone, which is also a goddess. A goddess of destruction, even! She's bad, but she was shattered, and some people have pieces of her, which could be good—but maybe only if you're bad? Unclear at this juncture.

Yeah.. been 6 days, and I have not been able to login yet. Took like a day to get a character created without getting disconnected...
Since then infinite loading screen after picking the character, never getting into the game.

Tried most of the "100% fixes, trust me bro" crap that have been suggested.

The game is decent enough I guess but yeah, the story is incomprehensible. I don't even know if it's the translations fault either, it just fundamentally seems confusing. I don't bother reading anything anymore.

I dunno I’m loving the game on ps5. Bets MMO for me on consoles. Storylines in these games almost always sucks but I’m digging it.

Maybe I don’t look for reasons to hate things /smh

Amazon's half-assed, god awful effort to become a games company has never been anything less than hilarious.
The most annoying thing about this, as a fan of MMOs, is that they have just been making the genre itself look worse overall to the public.

This is 3 out of 3 MMOs that they have fumbled.

At least PoE 2 will be out soon.

Lets be honest, 90% of ppl dont play MMO for the story, and even if they did none of them have been anything to write home about anyway.
True but voice over and subtitles and even quest givers contradicting themselves?

OP should have included this part of the article:
There's a general, and he wants to use those star fragments as weapons. I assumed this wasn't good; people who want weapons are generally bad (unless they're the kinds of weapons that I want, because I'm good). The cutscene's subtitles said the general sent a witch to an island where a wizard was hiding people with stars in them. Again, signs point to bad. The cutscene's narrator, however, said the wizard sent the witch there, which made it sound good?

This wouldn't be the last time that the voiceover and subtitles contradicted each other. Throughout my brief time with Throne and Liberty, the captions I was reading were regularly at odds with the words I was hearing characters say, sometimes to the point that a questgiver would speak instructions that contradicted the quest's actual objectives.
This is even for MMO standards bad.

This is true for the most part. It’s what made a game like Guild Wars 1 so different, because it always felt like they created a single player game first and then made it multiplayer.

This PoS looking game just turned up on steam randomly last week, then I checked steamdb and the player numbers were like already 250k

It can only be the Korean crowd right? It looks like one of those games.

Only a matter of time till western devs realise that built in audience is massive, just make a game for korea/China and your sorted

Yeah I don't know, everyday someone ask why they are stuck on infinite loading after picking their character, even people that played just find the day before.
I currently have 18+ hrs trying to login..

I know its my Windows install that the problem but I need/use all program that installed currently, I tried a fresh install on a different nvme with ONLY Steam and GPU drivers installed and I logged in to the game in seconds, I just don't want to sit for a week, slowly installing every program I use and configure them to my liking until it breaks the login for the game.

Not going to win any awards in story telling but what MMO ever is? Will not spend any money on it but have had a decent enough time in it so far to be honest. I'm only level 30 though.
