Now that we have the PS5 Pro in hand, what's your thoughts?

Design is fine I guess. Not much different than the regular PS5.

Also, I haven't bought a stand for it yet ( I like mine vertical), so I have it resting on top of the OG PS5 stand (sadly the screw doesn't go all the way in, so I can't secure it that way).

Game wise I haven't played anything yet.

I like the design of it, it’s quite a bit better than the original hideous PS5. I played Stellar Blade and Miles Morales for a bit and yea it’s a cleaner image but if I’m being honest, I think people are going to dig really deep to justify spending $700 on this thing.

They shouldn't. No need for anyone to justify how they spend their own money.
 
Games clearly look better on the Pro but it’s not a major leap that some people might be expecting.

If your one of these people that can’t get over the fact that your not playing your ps5 games at the best possible settings than I think the Pro is worth it. But I would say most people don’t fit this audience so most would be better off not picking it up right now.

I’ve always been an early adopter and I do care a lot about performance so it was a no brainer pick up for me but I can already see myself mostly playing on my PC, unless Sony starts putting out more first party games.

Looking forward to picking up Astro bot and Stellar Blade but once I’m done with those games I don’t have a clue what else I will be playing on the pro. I thought about doing another play through of spiderman 2 but now that’s it’s coming to PC I would rather play it again on PC.

I really hope Sony has a lot of games planned for 2025.

I've only been able to play Hogwarts so far and I don't remember it looking near as good. Maybe I'm wrong because it was a year ago and I have dementia sometimes.

I'll be trying some VR titles shortly, but my impressions are a little off and it's mostly because I'm having an issue with the system overall. The UI isn't snappy and it feels like the font is really big. I like as small as it can go for reading. I've also disabled pop ups and yet they keeping showing up so I'm slightly annoyed. I've had it hard crash twice on me but only when accessing the settings menu. The third try, it worked and hasn't crashed since. No fan issues though!

I bought this for games and Hogwarts impressed a lot. I'll try some more and report back.

As a quick follow-up, tested RE2R in 4K with RT from the beginning up until you reach the RPD station (mostly 45-55fps with rare peaks to 60fps on base PS5, a never-ending stutter) and fucking hell it's all smooth as oil on Pro.

Have no measuring equipment so during that explosion cutscene (dropping below 45fps on PS5) I tried looking for inconsistencies by following moving fire sparks around the frame, but they all moved smoothly.
Raccoon streets filled with burning cars and zombies, literal butter all the way to the RPD gates. Running around the main hall, not an issue I could spot, a literal night and day from base PS5.

Very, very, very happy about this.
Now I know the rest of unpatched Resident Evil RT are rocksolid as they were all lighter than RE2. Only need to test DMC5 RT and as far as the performance gains I wanted from this machine I'm all set.
I'm shocked, why DF haven't tested any RE yet. These games are much better, than Alan Wake or Wukong, and run well, according to several users.
 
Man....what an absolutely fantastic console!

I've downloaded most of my library that has PS5 Pro enhancements and I'm extremely impressed with the upgrade, far moreso than the PS4 Pro. I'm someone who games on a 65" 4K TV and I was always struggling to choose between Performance and Fidelity mode depending on the game. It was always readily apparent to me in many titles that Fidelity modes looked significantly more crisp than the performance modes in most cases. As a result, the more native 4K titles appeared "next gen" to me while the 1440P or less games always looked decidedly cross gen despite being 60 fps.

Games I Played in Fidelity (30 FPS) on Base PS5:
  • TLOU1 for instance I played @ 30 fps because of how clear it looked.
  • FF7:R is the obvious choice @ 30 fps because the difference is enormous.
  • Hogwarts Legacy looked extremely soft to me in performance mode, but was jittery as hell at 30 fps so this was a difficult one to go with, but ultimately settled on Fidelity mode
  • Insomniac games tends to have very smooth 30 fps modes so I usually played those at fidelity. Performance always looked quite soft and I could more easily adjust to 30 fps for their titles.
Games I Played in Performance (60 FPS) on Base PS5:
  • Demons Souls was a case where Fidelity did look sharper, but Performance looked good and I appreciated 60 fps more. Definitely felt soft.
  • Stellar Blade is an action game and really demands 60 fps, but this game can look extremely washed out, blurry, and just unstable at times.
  • God of War: Ragnarok just didn't seem to have a huge gap between Perf and Fidelity when it comes to detail.
  • Horizon FW I originally played in 30 fps mode due to the launch issues with 60 fps, but after it got patched the fidelity gap wasn't as wide.
After playing all of these games I came away really stunned with the picture quality. Games like Stellar Blade, FF7R, and Hogwarts Legacy are instantly transformed in their performance mode to looking even better than Fidelity does @ 30 fps on the base consoles. These are all games that really struggled in performance mode, looking very soft, unstable, and blurry. PSSR is putting in the work and makes the image look razor sharp with that silky smooth 60 fps framerate.

The benefits of these games that weren't well optimized to begin with is amazing, but equally amazing are the results on the Sony premier games like Horizon, TLOU, God of War, and Spider-Man. The level of detail and smoothness for these games is just insane. I wasn't expecting God of War Ragnarok to look as good as it does, but the new 60fps PRO mode looks vastly superior to the 30 fps fidelity mode. There is so much rich detail on the image that I was just instantly blown away. Textures pop. Long-distance detail pops. Particle effects pop. It looks phenomenal. Same situation for TLOU, HFW, And SM2. I did experiment a bit with the Fidelity PRO modes (Insomniac / Hogwarts), and the Ray Tracing improvements are nice and make for a more dynamic image, but ultimately not worth the tradeoff in performance to me. I suppose I find resolution/image quality to be more important than reflections. So I came away with pretty much selecting the 60 fps PRO modes across the board. Makes the decision easy. Not to say some games don't come along and make me change back to 30 fps, but so far I am very happy sticking with 60 fps.

Overall though I couldn't be happier with the improvements. It brings up all the games to a very high standard, even games that aren't well optimized to begin with. PSSR is truly transformational in what it has the ability to do for many titles going forward, and it feels like it'll be a rare occurrence where a game just doesn't look goddamn crystal clear pleasing and smooth to look at on the PS5 Pro. This will be a great upgrade until next-generation rolls around and really does provide for that Premium console experience. Do I recommend it for everyone? Not if you don't have a large TV or don't sit very close to a smaller TV. The base PS5 looks very good already still. Probably a good way to tell whether you'll benefit from the Pro is if you had the same issues I had deciding between 30 fps and 60 fps games.

Bravo for another masterful console update by Cerny. It's smaller, more appealing to look at, 3x the amount of useable SSD space for games, has less Coil whine, and now my collection of games is being rendered at an extremely high level of fidelity that truly makes use of those 4K displays! Well worth the additional $350 cost to upgrade for me, especially since PS5 is my primary place to play games.

Good feedback, detailed, thanks a lot. After completing astro's playroom yesterday (loved it), I have to buy my first game for my ps5 pro. This generation, I decided to have only ONE game at a time + selection of few games that are recurring and never ending (street fighter 6 + pinball games + a few arcade games). I'm torn...what is THE game I should start with ? I'm hesitating between 4 games :
- elden ring (looks to run good on ps5 pro)
- cyberpunk 2077 (does it run nicely on the pro ? Haven't seen an video)
- the last of us part 2
- Horizon forbidden west.
What would you choose ?

This generation, I decided to have only ONE game at a time + selection of few games that are recurring and never ending (street fighter 6 + pinball games + a few arcade games). I'm torn...what is THE game I should start with ? I'm hesitating between 4 games :
- elden ring (looks to run good on ps5 pro)
- cyberpunk 2077 (does it run nicely on the pro ? Haven't seen an video)
- the last of us part 2

Elden Ring and CB2077 do not have Pro patches, unfortunately. So they get boost mode updates, but that really isn't taking advantage of the hardware. Both are great games to play of course and come highly recommended in general, and who knows if they get a Pro patch in the future. I would say to HOLD OFF for now. I would be shocked if CDPR didn't eventually update CP2077 since they tend to be tech enthusiasts. Elden Ring though? I don't have much faith in FromSoft. It would be an amazing update.

As for TLOU2 and HFW - is this the first time you've played either of them? If you've already played one of them, I'd play the other. If you've played neither, but have played the games that came before, I would recommend playing whatever game you liked better. In terms of PS5 Pro updates, both games are top notch looking and you can't go wrong with either.

Yep, playing TLOU2 is a good choice. It's a shorter game than HFW and PSSR looks amazing. Crystal clear 4K and 60 fps. Phenomenal gunplay in this title too....very violent and gritty.

Sadly, Ghost of Tsushuma does not have a Pro mode either, so if you haven't played that I would wait as well.

If you're someone who doesn't mind 30 fps I highly recommend Jedi Survivor on the Pro. It looks amazing now...finally getting a real taste of what PC quality Ray tracing is like in a console gamer. The rt reflections are so much clearer than before. The RT gi elements are more obvious and the shadow quality is much better now too...

Other game I played was Forbidden West (was the first game I tried) and you start seeing details you didn't see before now...good first impressions..

It's really unfortunate to hear about some of these lackluster Pro/pssr implementations though as per Digital foundry and NX gamer ....like SW Outlaws ...i was expecting that game to be the most impressive of the entire lot since a) it already had impressive RT gi on base ps5 and b) it was being held back by FSR2. Also, fucking Ubisoft- only gives us one mode to choose from now? You can always count on Ubisoft to make dumb decisions with settings for games.

Installed it yesterday :) Suprised they call it PS5 when you set it up instead PS5 Pro

- ALL games look and play better (no brainer here)
- More silent than my PS5
- Looks good in person as a ''digital'' SKU.
- Easy to install, datatransfer work perfectly


If you have the money why wouldnt you buy it? Other than that it feels and plays just like a PS5 should

Nice impressions! I should have taken a vacation day, only had time to look at Bloodborne, which doesn't have a patch of course, I still saw some people saying it looked a bit better. It absolutely does not(not noticeable) so my first impressions were not the greatest. I'll download GoW, Demon's Souls (should be installed now), and TLOU2 when I get a chance!

Ton of games are not locked 30/60 this gen. You should really plan getting vrr tv man ! It’s worth it
 
Played a round of Black Ops 6 this morning. Looks much clearer in the 120Hz mode to my eyes. I don't know if they've also knocked a few of the graphical settings up a notch but it definitely looks better, although I'd say it's subtle.

Horizon Forbidden West looks absolutely fucking insane, although it was always a looker anyway. Not a good one to compare for me though as I never spent much time playing it on the base PS5. I'll be trying out a few other games tonight. I want to see if RE4 had a VR upgrade.

Actually very happy with the Pro so far.

Tried GT7, FF7 Rebirth and Stellar Blade.

Huge IQ and performance upgrade in Stellar Blade and FF7 Rebirth. Stellar Blade even runs at 80fps with a VRR screen.

GT7 looks really nice with RT. I hope CDPR is working on a Cyberpunk Pro patch. Would love to see how far they can push RT on a console.

I'm gonna try Metaphor next. According to DF it's running at a locked 60 now.

And is it just me or does the new disc drive sound quiter than the original model?

The main thing with the PS4 Pro for me wasn’t even the fan noise, that I eventually started to expect whenever I’d play something graphically intensive. What really tripped me up was the plastic quality that was used for the console, where it would always creak as it heated up, and did so again once it cooled down. Great console overall, but compared to my One X, which felt like a $500 product… Was rather cheaply made.

Dont have a series x but build quality is generally a let down from sony so I second this.

Haven't tested that many games yet, but at the moment I feel a bit dissapointed. I'm sure it's gonna be fine when I get to play new games with better implementation... 🤷‍♂️

I can see a slight difference with some games looking more solid, DF said Stellar Blade looks amazing.
But switching between Balanced & Pro I can barely tell the difference, not can't!
I can see it but it's nothing that stands out that much
Both are as detailed and sharp, but Pro Mode cleans up the digital artifact in little spots you can see if you get right up to your screen.
for those that put vaseline in their eyes to play at 60fps performance mode it's a big upgrade in PQ.
Especially when those games have really bad IQ in performance mode.
But if you dabble between the two depending on the overall package...you might be scratching your head and wondering if the game has been patched yet.
I'm still overviewing it, I've got most of the games with Pro Patches and I've only been through what was at hand so.
I mean I had a 1080p TV when I got the PS4 Pro and even then I could see a massive difference.
But this time... frame rates & future proofing is the only benefit I can see at the moment.
We'll see, still got more games to try 👍

Still nice to have the peace of mind that you are getting the best version however.

So I have had a good bit of time with the Pro and I love it. I don't think that the reviews do it justice as it affects a lot of games. One of them for example is BF2042, it now barely drops below its top resolution threshold which means when you are playing it (I play it a lot) the image looks loads cleaner and much more like the PC equivalent, even my mate mentioned that the witcher 3 has the same, again DRS in play and less scaling.

Dragon age is a huge step up in performance mode, so have ben playing a lot of that and I will get a good play with everything this weekend so will report any further findings.

Also, fan noise. Success. There was a hum which was annoying me despite being low volume, I woke this morning and tried rubber o-rings, but no success, in fact more noise. But then I tried it without the covers and noticed it pretty much vanished, so I tried bending the cage top (metal part) which is just under the cover as I figured it must be some kind of amplification or resonance and hey presto its now virtually gone, certainly not an issue in the slightest anymore :)

FF7R2 runs as it should have from the start.

The pro enhanced category on the store doesn’t work.

We need patches and updates for way more games.

It just says ps5 everywhere. In all the menus and screens and welcome areas updates, saves whatever - the system barely seems to know itself that it’s a pro.

Why is Astro bot so expensive??

Against my better judgement, I got a pro with the stand. Maybe I'll play some more Playstation games now since I've only been turning on my PS5 to claim the free monthly games this year.

I tried out Demon's Souls and for some reason it loaded an old save file. Did the system transfer and still got the older save. Lost my NG4+ nearly lvl 400 character. :pie_diana:
At least I got an excuse to replay Demon's Souls now. :messenger_winking_tongue:

Tried out Resident Evil Revelations(PS4) and I could clearly see an improvement with the UI being sharper, as did a lot of the in-game textures.

I like the hardware. Pretty impressed with the console design, surprised at how much smaller it is esp when PS4Pro was such a unit compared to OG or the slim.

2 TB drive is great (and I will still die on the hill that given the choice I’d take 2 TB over disc drive), I also moved my 1 TB m.2 drive from OG PS5 so I’ve got her loaded up and tons of storage space left.

Oh, and I use my console horizontally but it’s still complete bullshit that a $700 console doesn’t come with a vertical stand.

I love gaming on the ps5 fat but godamn is it a pos when it comes to cleaning and moving it around.
Vertical stand saved the day for me. I also hated how the console was so precarious when horizontal. I put it vertical, and it’s like a rock now.

I spent two hours playing Elden Ring on Pro and while it does look sharper the god damn framerate still isn't a smooth 60 unless you have a VRR TV which I don't
I haven’t kept up with USA pricing, but based on current Canadian pricing, I suspect you could have bought a 55” LG B3 for the cost of the PS5 Pro.

VRR is almost pointless on the regular PS5 since frame rates are so low, but seems virtually a requirement to take advantage of PS5 Pro.
 
The only game that's really impressed me so far is F1 . I was far more impressed with the PS4 Pro unit on day 1.

Have to laugh at Digital Foundry's Alex and some here .Making our the PS5 Pro might even be a system for PC users to migrate too 😂

Well, I don't agree. Ps5 pro is THE reason why I did not get a gaming PC. The gap is narrower than ever and does not compensate the loss of convenience and easiness of the console. But to each his choice 😀.

Damn.....another one with noise issues. Definitely seems to be a number of units that have this problem.
Mines a bit loud but I had just been playing horizon remake in 120 hz mode for 2 hours.

Down load speed sucks right now on psn so gonna take a while to give it a proper test.

It might be where its placed in relation to sitting position and might be horizontal vs vertical. I can hear mine if I put my head up close to it, but don't notice it sat just over 2m away. I have mine horizontal FWIW. I would still class mine as silent. 120hz VRR unlocked is for sure going to push it to its max though. I did try Uncharted 4 fidelity unlocked (superb btw) and didnt hear anything, but I was only testing for a short while.

I just tested witcher 3 and performance mode looks insanely better thanks to the drs they have. Be even better if we could get the ray tracing mode at 60 with pssr
