I don't mean to pile on, but best case scenario Vita sold what, 130-140K this month worldwide?

Someone tell me how the fuck Sony is going to get even close with their fiscal year 10M projection?

Barely going to clear 5 at this rate.

Info links added for anyone who wants to work it out themselves:

360: 160K
PS3: 124K
3DS: 113.5K
Wii: 71K
PSV: >50K, <56.8K

1 2 3 4 5 6

As you can see, some of this is based on rough numbers from last May, so it's not exact.

They are goign to do it by stuffing the channel, just like they planned when they made that projection.

Honest question: Is there any hope for the Vita at this point?

Vita needs to be home to whatever the next random breakout gaming craze is.

Or, I don't know, have Sony announce they're giving the Vita a six-month-exclusive window for The Last Of Us and all future first-party titles, plus MH4P announced in Japan.

That's if they want to make it big. If they want to do just okay, they just need a lower price and a better more coherent image for the console (and NOT 'it's like a PS3 you play on the bus!')

Everything I've been buying lately is off of PC or iOS, so I'm not exactly shocked. Been a bit of a dry spell for consoles and dedicated handhelds.

Max Payne 3 and Dragon's Dogma are both games I'd like to try, just not at full price.

Not sure what Rockstar would be expecting out of Max Payne anyway, it was never a huge franchise and they didn't exactly try to make the new one that much different than the old, seemingly. If you want me to pay sixty dollars nowadays, you're going to either have to blow me the fuck away through raw effort or appeal to pretty my weird niche tastes, which means to sucker punch me with art direction and loot and or stats :lol

Shoulda let R* Vancouver make Bully 2! ...Because I want it :(

Dragon's Dogma feels like something I would have normally clamped on day one, but the lack of online and really iffy aesthetic soured me on it. This is the best Capcom Japan can do on art direction? It's even more generic looking than Oblivion and all of the trailers and previews still don't feel like they let me know what the game actually is!

Guys, Call of Duty will save the Vita. Call of Duty? In your hands? Once gamers see that they can play new Declassified Missions™ and other exclusive content, they'll snatch up Vitae like hotcakes.

So Minecraft with it's 2+ million on the 360 would be like 2nd in the NPDs?

2 million is worldwide. Depending on the US vs Rest of the world break down, I guess it is possible that the game beat Diablo 3 US retail. Diablo 3 is around 1M based on YoY increase in the PC retail market (up $56M)

EDIT: Granted Diablo 3 sold a ton digitally as well.

How the fuck are people walking into a store, and buying a new DS over a New 3DS? Isn't the price difference minimal?

I really think Nintendo is going to regret not having Conquest and Black & White 2 on the 3DS only...

and yet iDevices and smartphones continue to sell like crazy. It's been a long generation and people's thirst for newness starts to build up. People don't get too excited about a piece of equipment that's been out 6+ years now.

I'm hard pressed to think of another consumer electronic that has been updated in 7 years and is expected to keep selling tons.

Not even close to the same thing.

Phones are actually phones and Apple is in a stratosphere of its own.

I doubt it. I'm not even sure why they thought going up against subsidized hardware and $0.99 games was a good idea to begin with. 3DS should have been the canary in the coal mine.

"PlayStation Mobile" is what they should have done to begin with. Create an Amazon-esque store on Android that runs on devices like Galaxy S-III. It eliminates the risk of hardware costs, and they could offer much better games than what a lot of people currently have access to.

3DS is $170, DSiXL dropped to $130, DSi dropped to $100.

XLs have comparatively gigantic screens so they have easy appeal.

Doesn't help that Mario Tennis is $40. I'm willing to dish out $40 for Super Mario 3D Land, but these $40 price tags have turned me off a lot of games. In another year when we start to get more reasonable prices on old and used titles, I will pick up some of the titles I skipped. I'm sure I am not the only one.

Great point, which is why I believe Nintendo still needs to have software for Wii U at $50.

Nintendo is losing money on every 3DS sold and will until about September of this year.

So instead of killing off the DSi they are riding that pony as far out as possible.

It will eventually bite them in the ass and I fully expect them to shut down all DS production after this holiday season.

On one hand it is really good that Nintendo is committing to putting more first party titles out to fill gaps. Unfortunately Mario Open Tennis seems like a Pilotwings Resort more than a Mario 3D Land or Mario Kart 7. The former are games that were rushed to get product on the shelves and fill niches, and sadly just lacked the time required to make more content. The latter are decently meaty games that were fast tracked to completion, but didn't suffer greatly for it.

Thus Mario 3D Land and Kart 7 are worth the price. Pilotwings or Open Tennis, not so much.

Tennis suffers especially since you don't even have to go back to an old GBA game to say it is lacking content... a lot of major tennis games in the last 2 years have really packed in the content, such as Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip, or even Virtua Tennis 4 - both of which are available on the 3DS competitor right now.

Just checked, here in canada a DSi is $100, 3DS is $170. Big diff.

Man, I wonder what Capcom's leadership must be thinking right now about Dragon's Dogma. Besides bombing here and at least doing decent in Japan, it doesn't seem like it will in any way, shape, or form be able to recoup for the development costs anytime soon.

God forbid if RE6 manages to do the impossible and do poorly this holiday.

Operation Raccoon City sold more than Max Payne 3 and Dragon's Dogma combined, as the poster above said. I don't think Capcom has anything to worry about with RE6. It will easily break a mill first month.

Interesting, Max Payne 3 selling under 450k across 3 platforms. Was expecting over 500k, seeing how even LA Noire did over that and the "Rockstar brand".

Alan Wake (from Remedy, the original developers of Max Payne) did around 145k in their first NPD on 1 platform back then, and it was considered a bomb to many. Here, one (or maybe even 2) of the 3 versions did less than that it seems.

Max Payne 2 underperformed back in Fall 2003 despite Half-Life 2 and Doom III being delayed. They should have brought the franchise back earlier in the cycle if they wanted it to find an audience. And third person shooters have never been as popular for multiplayer. Even Gears routinely ranks behind Battlefield, Halo, and three Call of Duty games on Xbox Live rankings.

Time for next-gen. It should be interesting to see how the WiiU fares given the current situation. Is it current gen fatigue or is it an issue with the industry as a whole?

Yes, this is their biggest mishap. Not adapting to the broad mobile market.

There's a huge untapped marketplace here. Sony needs to forget about selling proprietary hardware and do a full court press on selling software, that's where the money is anyway.

I think the issues we see here lie within more than just generation fatigue. Lack of original titles, falling out of the middle ground, high retail pricing... coupled with the fact that the economy hasn't gotten better and people are spending less and less, especially on games that have become too similar.

Truly a terrible situation the industry has found itself in and I don't see it getting any better next year.

I think it will do 300k to 500k on steam. PC franchise so it might do well.

Rest will be upto steam sales and copies sold @ 20$. on consoles

R* were expectingn a lot of sales @ 60$ so i guess thats why the sales are disappointing

Yeah that makes sense, and I agree it will bite them in the ass later. I really think a revision will be released next year that also can be used as a Wii-U controller.
