360, a console just hitting its prime (in the US).
Which is why i continue to be baffled by those calling for the next Xbox.

Would you kill your golden goose too, in the hopes a new goose that shits magic eggs shows up instead?

Nintendo is releasing something new and fresh next year that will most likely take some attention away. This is clearly the highest they will go.. its all down hill from here.

7th November on the market and it manages 1.7m sales. Unprecedented.

Because the majority of those 1.7 million customers are late-adopters, the same types of consumers who choose to spend their money on bargain bin and pre-owned games.
Or movies and all the other casual facing products that are available via the 360 now. The game has changed somewhat.

Kinect really can't be the only thing driving 360 sales, right? As much as people bitch about lack of Wii software it's just as bad for the Kinect.

Well Kinect as a system helps sell, but the software sells like garbage so I'm not sure what to make of that.

It's a combination of that, big games that are designed to work on 360 better like COD and Skyrim, and the great job 360 does of establishing a community and all of the other features Live has.

Sony does not do as good of a job on marketing their system or games, though they seem to be learning as there have been ridiculous amounts of Uncharted 3 commercials on ESPN. But at this point they're never going to wrestle control away from MS in America. Not this gen at least.

I wouldn't exactly say apples and oranges. Both essentially cover based shooters with terrible grenade throwing mechanics. I realize Gears had a big multi component, but I'd say Uncharted's quality of narrative was its "other selling point". Obviously the multiplayer kept the disc in people's 360s much longer than UC.

It's really apples and oranges in this case. The similar gameplay doesn't matter. The reason why people buy Gears first and foremost is for multiplayer. It doesn't just apply to competitive MP. From the first game Gears has been a co-op experience. Most people didn't play the game for a story or for cutscenes or characters. Lost of people buy the games to go through the campaigns in co-op before going into the full multiplayer mode. I'm sure many of them don't ever touch single player.

The demographics for the two games are pretty different.

"PlayStation 3 is off to a phenomenal start to the holiday season, recording the best ever Black Friday sales period in the console's five-year history. According to the November NPD report the PS3 saw a 70% increase in hardware and a 30% increase in software year-over-year. Consumer demand has been very strong for our holiday bundles and for recent first and third party blockbuster titles such as Uncharted 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. We're excited that millions of people are joining the PlayStation community and realizing its incredible entertainment value across games, movies, TV, music, and more" -Patrick Seybold, Sr. Direcrtor of Corporate Communications at SCEA.

Is this true? I jumped on UC and Gears 1 about a year after both were released and I couldn't stand Gears (though admittedly I only played about 5-6 hours). Ironically I'm replaying Uncharted 1 right now to clean up trophies in the first time in almost 2 years. Obviously both series are well loved, but was UC1 really that looked down upon? It holds up ridiculously well even after having played the sequels, in my opinion of course.

UC1 is just as good as UC2 and UC3. UC1 had some of the best gun porn in my opinion. I still have many fond memories of the game (I played it around launch I do believe). Gears 1 was immensely fun in my opinion, but had one of the worst narratives I've ever played. So, yeah, Gears kind of loses its appeal over time, but that's what the MP's for. And in this case, it's probably what helped the game sell.

Regardless, Sony's American studios have a tough time charting, being that Sony is commonly recognized as a Japanese company. Microsoft is American, and Gears was one of the strongest titles released in 2006. Gears was Halo with bros.

Because the majority of those 1.7 million customers are late-adopters, the same types of consumers who choose to spend their money on bargain bin and pre-owned games.

Microsoft needs to get the core and early adopters excited again and the only way to do that at this stage really, is with brand new hardware*. That said, I still think 2013 is when that will happen.

* Especially with Nintendo releasing Wii U so soon.

The hardcore are still excited about software, and software is where these companies make their money. They usually lose money on hardware, so why put out another system if it's not needed?

Look at the numbers. In terms of software, this is the best November on record. If 360 is still putting out these kinds of numbers next November, I don't see why they'd even release in 2013 (unless Sony does).

Exactly. People who run out to pay $500 for a console are the ones that pay $60 for software and get an attach rate of 47 games.

People who wait until the console is $149 run and pick up four games....each under $29

900K PS3?? Wow, that was unexpected.

First year nintendo is on the bottom of the stack. Time for an upgrade...Uprgrade...you-pgrade. Or something.

Holy shit at the PS3 numbers. They're admittedly higher than what I was guessing but I'm glad. I'm really happy with the holiday bundle slim I bought and there are so many good core game exclusives. They deserve success.

Just no effort in this PR.

900k? I thought the order on which it was displayed in the start post signified the order at which they sold, guess not then.

Still don't understand why Uncharted doesn't push numbers like say a Gears. After UC2 people should have no worries jumping in, and the multiplayer is one of the best of the gen. So weird.

As someone who bought gears but rented uncharted it's pretty simple.

Gears has a multitude of multiplayer modes I want to play because I love the combat mechanics.

Uncharted I want to rush through the story and send it back to gamefly because I hate the combat even after the patch. Don't hate the combat enough to not see sully/drake though.

y'all should be ashamed
PS3 had that nice $200 bundle with two games at pretty much every retailer...I bet a huge majority of sales came from that.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Why is Major Nelson's avatar such a creepy image. That guy is burning and melting, fuck.

The 360 ridiculous late surge must be at least in part kids with Wiis 'graduating' to the 360 and Call of Duty.

I dont understand how a 6 year old console is selling like a new one. It's ridiculous. Amazing, but ridiculous.

Hard to tell since that bundle was only on sale on black friday, I'm sure it helped a ton though. That's the PS3 that I bought and I have to say I am very pleased with the value and quality of the system so far.

I also got an extra $40 for the 2 games it came with so that helped too.
