Do we think MS greenlight Sunset Overdrive 2? Or something else from Insomniac? Maybe an E3 reveal?

Yeah, thats gonna be a really hard sell to the consumer base. Starting up a new generation is not going to fix MS' biggest problem - the lack of audience diversity on their platform, and the lack of WW market appeal of the Xbox brand. They need to fix these two things, and neither of these have to do with the console & the hardware it contains, and everything to do with marketing & PR.

Yup. Besides NA and the UK, MS just gave up trying to compete in the rest of the world. They just handed Europe to Sony this generation. it didn't help that they initially marketed the XBO to be very "American-centric".

Guess MS will be the judge of that.

And concerning all the malice Greenberg gets right now, I, too, thought that QB had the potential to become a great new IP, both review- and sales-wise. I was wrong.

To be fair, you didn't have access to preorder data, so that's a perfectly rational position to take in the weeks running up to launch. Until the reviews hit it looked like it would give the platform a real shot in the arm.

So did we get Ratchet numbers?

Caught up with the thread.

Quantum Break fucking bombed!

Like where do you even go from there? An Alan Wake 2 or QB2 will flop in the current market, so what can Remedy do?

Maybe MS will be like "we don't care" and greenlight either anyway.

Wait, doesn't Remedy own the Alan Wake IP? So they could find another publisher maybe.

I'm happy for Ratchet. Sad for Remedy. I still sometimes think of that cool alternate universe where Remedy stuck with Take-Two and Alan Wake was a tremendous success published by Rockstar.

Well, the director and team behind Sunset Overdrive/Resistance 3 are working on a VR game for Oculus, so I'm guessing not.

The Ratchet team is also working on what looks like a shorter development cycle/smaller scale game for Oculus, so I suspect Sony decided to wait to see how Ratchet did before signing a sequel.

Not asking you in particular, but what's the usual MoM drop for a large March release going into April? A ~90% MoM drop looks terrible.

It always depend on how many weekes it has in The First month.

For a Game with 4/5 weeks, and in a way lower month ( March to April ), i'd Say ~85% drop should ne expect.

Still, 90% is really bad.

EDIT: Titanfall drop for example was -87%. 1.08m to 140k. ( XB1, of course i don't include 360 Version )

Clearly not a popular opinion but I think they're in talks with Insomniac about another exclusive, and SO going GWG could be MS checking engagement stats to see if it's worth funding another or whether to try a new IP.

I'm not sure.

Could be a Ninja Gaiden situation where MS published the title on Xbox and then they took it to Playstation later. I would imagine MS likes to keep Remedy and Alan Wake in particular on a leash, though, so I bet there was some deals in place.

Which is a shame. I think Remedy's games would do much better on the PS4. The audience is there. Games like Until Dawn became huge hits even with Sony's limited marketing.

Yep.

504K > Ratchet and Clank > 207K
Thanks BTW

Such a shame that with all the poor HW numbers Sony didnt do PR as that seems to be a big highlight (well to me it is, I like these 'PS2' titles and happy to see them pop up).

Really well done to Insomniac - tbh its a relief they have so many pies for their fingers...

Does MS own the Sunset Overdrive IP?

I think that was one of the conditions for signing with MS -- IP ownership.

I'd be curious to know if Sunset Overdrive 2 (if its being made) will be multiplatform and IG got a new publisher.

Insomniac needs to try putting SO on ps4 to see how the audience there resonates, maybe xbox was not the right audience. I'm not port begging.

thanks.

nothing solid though. At least we know it did well regardless.

No, they don't. SO was before MS started wanting IP ownership again (because of the whole Ryse situation).

There's probably something in the contract that prevents them from bringing it to other systems for now.

Well done insomniac!! I'll be honest, I didn't see R&C charting well, nice to be proven wrong!

If I've read previous posters right, QB did worse than the order 1886? Damn....but these are not counting digital right? so there's a chance it will move units on PC via the windows store...right?

How does Ratchet stack up against Insomniac's other launches? Higher than the Resistances?

I believe the highest first month for a resistance title was Resistance 2 at 385k.

So right now, nobody knows.

But given that R&C was developed at their North Carolina studio, it probably had a very small budget relative to their Burbank studio titles.

I think the great thing of all of this is that these sorts of titles can do well at a lower price point and lower budget...they just need to get made. I hope Sony keeps funding them.

I doubt its much better on the windows store

Does QB have any online play with/against others? If not, I'm not surprised in why it did bad in this present market.

Remedy didn't seem very interested in multiplayer. I'd rather them not put it in at all rather than shoehorning it in.

Generally in today's market, you need to be releasing best in class software, or notably unique software, and Quantum Break is neither of those.

It also helps to be in tune with where the market is, or where it's heading, and your value proposition is going to be scrutinized pretty heavily.

I feel the core difference between Ratchet and Quantum Break is that Ratchet is one of the only high quality 3D platformers we've got in ages and it was being sold at an affordable price.

Quantum Break is one of quite a few cinematic shooters - following a sea of them last generation - it's not a great value proposition for $60, and it's not a 90+ Metacritic genre titan like Uncharted 4, which is coming out only a month or so later.

First parties tend to be some of the last Western publishers to let go of smaller projects like this, so I'm not surprised that Microsoft has a lot of low performing entries this generation. Similarly, Infamous, Killzone, Knack, and The Order weren't exactly blowing the roof off the industry, and Nintendo has had a variety of misses as well.

Infamous did almost 500k in his first month. It's much better than 150k. But yeah it's not 5-6 milion seller , same for KZ ( which sold more than 2.1 ML as January 2014 ).

It was the reason that SO is not on PS4. Sony wants to control the IP so Insomniac went to MS. I read it somewhere that Insomniac can't put SO2 on another platform until MS approves. Don't quote me on that though.

It didn't work okay though. The PS3 outsold the 360 WW (by a razor thin margin) specifically because of the non-US market. In the US, the 360 enjoys a what, 10million or more lead over the PS3? That got made up for thanks to the international markets.

We are seeing the same affect between the PS4 & X1. Even if both consoles were sold dead even in the US, the WW sales are what put Sony at a 2:1 lead over the X1. Unless Sony has a huge blunder again where they price themselves out of the competition or show up a year late, two mistakes they actually recovered from in the same generation they were made, then MS never has a chance on the WW scale. And unless MS begins to try & address that, nothing is gonna change.

Well, then, I'm sure you're aware that the 23% decrease is in revenue and not units? It shouldn't be surprising at all, the big two are selling for less than they were last year. Also, last gen hardware sales are continuing to decline. Yes, the XB1 has been down YoY so far, except for March, but the PS4 has been up YoY or at least, flat. I don't see why we should be concerned. Furthermore, April is a very slow month for sales and if previous months told us anything, it's that this gen, sales are getting increasingly diverted to the holiday season.

Bumping this because it's the smartest post I've seen all day. Well spoken, sir. Funny how this happens every April, and people still haven't learned.

Feel you are grasping and trying to make a point where there isn't one

360 did a lot more than ok, especially compared to "ps2, xbox" no one could say it was a wrong move unless you have some other idea behind it other than business.

xbox sold something like 20 something million in its life time and 360 is over 80. So, where did it not work? took out the huge difference between ps2 and xbox.
