Also glad to see Mario & Luigi RPG 3 still doing well. I know that it's a Nintendo title so maybe that's just to be expected, but I'm always glad when the Mario RPGs sell well.

Surprised at the low number for Forza 3. Also think U2 deserved to do a heck of a lot better (800k at least). But wow at Demon Soul's. Didn't think that would even get top 20. PS3 hardware seems quite high as well. Wii price drop equals another big spike, surprise surprise.

I am quite sure atlus sold every copy they have shipped to stores. I bought DS the first day and after that it sold out in 2 hours according to the store guy and they never recieved another copy and still waiting.

That number would have been much higher if they shipped more.

DEMON'S SOULS :D :D :D

Also, I guess that means that everything in the top 20 did 100K+? No Ratchet in there, and I believe CS said it did 100K?

FINALLY! Thank you!

So, wow, Demon's Souls sold even better than we thought! And the Tekken 6 PS3 number surprises me... if it sold over 113,000 but the PS3+360 versions sold just under 200,000, the 360 version sold QUITE a bit less than the PS3 one.

That puts the game over a million worldwide now:

Japan - 663,484
US Sept - 258k
US Oct - between 113-150k

I don't think it has done quite as well in Europe, but I guess we'll have a better idea when Nintendo do their next round of financial reports.

Hasn't Tekken generally been a big seller? I'm not sure, I didn't follow sales back then. Namco's gotta be pretty disappointed...That's what they get for waiting this long to release it though.

They'd probably be more meaningful if you used the same scale on each chart, that or transposed the others on there.

Geez, putting them all on one chart really do not show the trends has much but if you insist.

The differences on the left axis give a hilariously skewed perspective, honestly.

The visual impression before reading further -- which is, you know, part of the purpose of a graph -- looks like the PS3 has a better market share than the Wii.

i choose the axis to emphasize the trend but *shrug*

Now if someone can give me an aggregate software number for October, i'll be happy

Hint for the share chart: the thick (ltd) line is pulled towards the thin (monthly) line. Thin line above thick line => share is rising; thin line below thick line => share is falling.

Damn that is pretty impressive for Demon's Souls.
I just feel bad for Brutal Legend. It lost to a game with almost zero expectations, no marketing, and a high difficulty that has modern game designers shaking their heads.

I think Brutal Legend still has a chance to do well during the holidays though. I can see it having a elementary school effect where kids talk about how awesome it is, and get their parents to buy the game during Christmas.

My opinion on why Sony first party retail games don't sell as well as their 360 counterparts:

1. Price of the system. Only very recently, did it get down from the stratosphere.

People always use the price excuse, but the 360 was $399 too when Gears of War sold a million copies in it's first month on sale. The PS3 version of GTAIV also sold a million in it's first month at $400 so clearly it's possible to have a million-seller debut on the PS3. It's just that Sony first party hasn't done that yet (nor have they come anywhere close).

Amazingly enough it has a 90% gameranking so it got good review to go along with word of mouth.
Yeah, it got good reviews. But taking a look at Brutal Legend, it received mostly positive marks from critics and had a sizable tv advertising backing from EA. It's surprising to say the least to see Demon's pull ahead (albeit only marginally)

I know its probably expected, but kudos on Mario Kart Wii, I mean to think it got overshadowed by Smash Bros and GTA IV, but still trucking.

Also, I think its time THQ/Yukes did something, Smackdown series went from selling millions to.. well what it is now, the game is broken and people want a change.

RSTEIN

Comics, serious business!
I wouldn't go as far to say that Forza 3 is a bomba. It's a hardcore racing game in a genre that's clearly struggling at the moment. Yet it still managed to sell 30% of Uncharted 2. I dunno, call me crazy, but selling 30% of the units sold by the best game of the year ain't too bad... especially when the audience is so much larger (shooters/action vs. sim racing).

I do think it is a bit of a disappointment overall tho and I think that Turn 10 really screwed things up online in a big way. That's slowly being fixed but as a MS first party studio their online fuck ups aren't acceptable.

Yeah and DS had virtually no marketing campaign that I could see. 150k on word of mouth and good reviews. Hard to explain, really. I thought Brutal Legends would sell itself on its premise and Jack Black alone. Maybe Schaffer's just cursed.

Really, how?

(Haven't been able to pick up FM3 yet (damn money and holiday away), so haven't been keeping up with the game that much.)

Demon's Souls :bow

That's how good word of mouth can offset a game with no marketing. Amazing for such a niche game. Give me DS2 Atlus!

Tekken 6 does terrible. On both platforms.

So actually, Demon's Souls is a top 10 game, according to how Microsoft counts games. Gooo DS! :D

And Jack Black... A lot of people don't really like him (me being one of the many).

Creamsugar, I believe

okay so looking back at it, all Creamsugar said was Ratchet & Clank sold better than Tekken 6 (360) but worse than Tekken 6 (PS3).

According to a blog, Tekken 6 sold just under 200k. From the Gamasutra chart, we can infer Tekken 6 (PS3) sold between 114k and 149k. So the upper and lower boundaries are:

If 360+PS3 = 199k, then Tekken 6 (PS3): 149k; Tekken 6 (360): 50k
or
If 360+PS3 = 199k, then Tekken 6 (PS3): 114k; Tekken 6 (360): 85k

But considering there are three games that sold better than Tekken 6 (PS3) but still less than 150k, I would guess Tekken sold closer to 120k, which would put the 360 version at around 80k.

If those assumptions are correct, Rachet & Clank is between 80k and 113k.

this is all such a fucking mess

so here's the list again, with more nebulous ranges:

1) UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES (PS3) 537,000
2) WII FIT PLUS (WII) 441,000
3) BORDERLANDS (360) 418,000

I can post it again:

Yeah but if Uncharted 3 goes on to debut at 175k I don't expect a generous response from gaf :lol

Haha you're right. I didn't even notice it. (Should not post on GAF while at work. :|)

Maybe they meant in a bundle-less sort of top 10. Just like Nintendo had four titles in their top 10 (which didn't combine Wii Fit Plus and Wii Fit Plus with Wii Balance Board).

Gotta give your best spin.

I am so happy to see Demon's soul do well. It is a fantastic game that all gamers should get to experience. Hopefully we will get some dlc areas at some point.

I hope they feel dumb. They could have published the game, owned the IP, and turned it into something huge. Now we have to rely on Atlus to keep on bringing it over here, but I guess they really don't have a reason not to.

Dumbass SCE. Probably Grace Chen's fault.

I don't think so.
If the title is published by SCEJ (and developed by From Software with a second party contract under Sony's WWS), SCEA will still be the first one to be asked to publish it in USA.
The Atlus contract is clearly just for this single game (also because the game was definetly not planned to be a series, although at this point I'm sure they will make a sequel with a bigger budget/better marketing, as happened with Ico).

They kind of hurt themselves. The visuals weren't even 720p, the story mode is awkward and the netcode is subpar. They somehow took two years to come out with a mediocre port. Luckily the arcade team did a solid job on the main game so it's still worth getting.

Also let's be realistic; even if SCEA had no right of first refusal, if both SCEA and Atlus sat down with From and said "We want to do your game", there's virtually no way Atlus would beat out SCEA to it. That's not an insult to Atlus, I'm sure their publishing pitches are incredible, but who on earth would turn down publishing by the platform holder?

There are so many advantages in terms of TRC/TCR/LotCheck approval, manufacturing schedules and quantities, code and technical support, promotion, etc.

It's pretty clear that SCEA was not interested in this title whether they actively said no via right of first refusal or whether they just didn't put in a bid in an open process. The same will be true for any future title that comes or doesn't come over here.

Soulcalibur now way more popular than Tekken?

JULY 08 SOULCALIBUR IV 374,700 (5 days)
OCT 09 TEKKEN 6 ~190,000 (5 days)

Even Japanese sales are close now, Tekken used to dominate there. 109,393 for SC and ~125,000 for Tekken first weeks. Hmm..

Tekken 6 with more sales on PS3 than 360, I'm a little shocked by that even though it was a Playstation franchise previously. Borderlands was the flavor of the month on 360 though, now with MW2 and Creed 2 coming it's going to be forgotten. I don't see Tekken coming on strong in November, most of the word of mouth has been negative because of the shit single player and horrid netcode. Too bad because the gameplay itself is good, but there are so many hurdles in the way.
