Nvidia Leak May Have Revealed Switch 2 Console

i mean, design of a new console always start with the release of the previous one, and the partnership has been profitable for both parties..so it's not surprising they are working on a new one

I see nothing here that shows nVidia is working on a Switch 2.
For those who don't know, nVidia has several SoCs, developed along the years, with most of it's generations of GPUs.
Switch happened to use the Maxwell based. But just because nVidia has one with Ampere, doesn't mean Nintendo will make a console out of it.
If Nintendo does like it said, and the Switch is in the middle of it's life, then there is still 4 years to go.
That means the SoC used by a Nintendo Switch2, if it uses nVidia, would based on something like Hopper, not Ampere.

groan.
I thought we were starting to get away from those damn Switch Pro or Switch 2 rumours.
I swear the thing didn't even hit shelves back in 2017 and people were talking about a pro.

People on the internet in 2017 were all "I will wait for the inevitable Switch 4K in 2 years".

I was looking u the T239 and saw articles from last year about it prior to Switch OLED release.

So I would agree that this is probably old data on what would have been the hardware for a Switch Pro. At the very least, it proves those rumors a year ago weren't 100% false.

I guess the question I have is why wasn't it implemented? Best guest is the chip shortage, not enough Ampere chips to go around.

This is less rumor and more conformation that the hardware rumored last year was at least real and developed for. Doesn't seem like it was put to use.

Switch release date: 3rd March 2017.

3DS games published by Nintendo after this date:

2017 (after 3rd March):
Mario Sports Superstars
Fire Emblem Echoes
Ever Oasis
Hey Pikmin
Metroid: Samus Returns
Mario & Luigi
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Kirby: Battle Royale
Mario Party: Top 100
Fire Emblem Warriors

2018:
Detective Pikachu
WarioWare Gold
Luigi’s Mansion

2019:
Mario & Luigi
Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn

It’s likely that Nintendo consider these 3 years of 3DS support as part of the 3DS’s overall life span.

Therefore it’s reasonable to believe that a Switch 2 could hit by next winter with Nintendo continuing to support the OG for 2-3 years.

I personally think Switch 2 is 2024, but that "halfway" comment was almost certainly speaking more about software support for the Switch as you're suggesting.

Switch 2 is also likely to be backward compatible and some of those later releases may have next gen patches like we've seen with XS and PS5.

You aren't getting a Switch 2 in the next 4 years. Nintendo themselves have said it's halfway through its lifecycle. They may release a Switch Pro (although I don't believe it given we've seen rumours for about 3 years straight) but not an entirely new system that has its own library.
Everyone's taking that "Halfway" quote way too goddamn literally. You expect Nintendo at some point to say Switch 90% through iys lifecycle? Of course not, that doesn't sound good for press.

The hardware described would be able to do it on a game that i described in my last post.
When was the last time Nintendo did something just because it's possible..? When it comes to modern (powerful or impressive) hardware features, I mean. They really don't do stuff just because the fans want them to, or because it "makes sense".

I'm really not, because I think halfway is them giving a rough estimate at best. I just don't believe we're gonna get a full-on Switch 2 any time soon given how well the current hardware/software is selling and the future of chip shortages.

For sure Nintendo are making Switch2.
I think we'll probably get news on it towards the end of the year.
I really hope so, Switch had terrible specs when it launched. It's launch game dropped to 15 FPS (BOTW). They need more juice.

What? I never said that they do something just because its possible.

They like using new technologies in creative ways.

Just look at every system they have done in the last 20yrs

If you disagree thats fine, but I think its the sort of thing Nintendo might do, and theres precedent for it, as in they use technologies in creative ways.

The bit that links it to Nintendo is the use of nvn2 when Nvidia uses nvn to refer to the Switch.

Yeah no, you never said that, sorry. And you're right, they do want to use technology in creative ways for sure - just rarely when the technology is new, expensive or power focused?

Well by the time the switch with this ampere chip comes out ray tracing will be years old, I dont see it any different to how they used 3d in super mario 64 or 3d screens with the 3ds or screen space reflections on wiiu/switch games.

Edit for those wondering why I'm saying something that sounds crazy - chip shortages. They aren't going away. The average 7 year hardware cycle is probably not viable right now, shortages mean it isn't worth it to release hardware nobody can buy for exclusive games nobody can play. Not when in 4 years time there could easily be 150m+ Switches in the wild. See also why every major PS5 release this year is on PS4.

You do realize that successful consoles live past the date the next iteration releases right? If Nintendo sees the Switch as a product they are going to support for 10yrs, that does not equate to them not releasing a console for 10 years. And, even if they do stop production of the OG switch in a year or two (which they might if a new switch is fully BC), they can still support the OG switch via software.

I do, I'm saying that I don't even think we're halfway through the full Switch cycle regardless of Nintendo's approximation. I think everything has been put back 1.5-2 years across the board in gaming and we won't see a real successor to the Switch until 2026, rather than say, mid 2024.

Nintendo is so behind I wouldn’t be surprised if they ignore ray tracing and SSDs.

Why can't they use little nvme solid state drives as cartridges? And use RTX IO for high speed asset loading?

I mean Nvidia can offer a total package, it is not just the gpu.

I might be in the minority here but I really hope it's not another portable or gimmicky machine. I'm long sick of stuff like waving Wiimotes, huge tablet controllers that devs barely utilise and waving JoyCons around.
I think my Switch has been played in handheld mode twice. And even those times were brief because it was uncomfortable.

Just give me good hardware, in-line with or better than the PS5/XBSX, then slap Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc on it.

That is connection so thin...
Not really. There is clearly a new API for a Switch-related device since it is using the nvn name.

On top of that, Nvidia leaker Kopite has said last year that the codename for the Switch SoC was T239. This newest leak makes reference to T239.

3DS had glasses less 3D just because it was sort-of possible.

Great point. And what's different from the 3ds is that Nintendo is likely to follow the same path Sony and Microsoft have. They will do cross gen games for the first 1-2 years. Maybe they'll release a small mount of Switch 2 exclusives, like Sony has done with the PS5, but most will be available on both consoles. So if that is the case then you're right. We could have a Switch 2 in 2024. I hope that's the case. I'm still happy with my OG Switch, but I could use a bit more power.

no SOC is even available in the world for power and better than PS5/XBSX is a fantasy. ohh how much do u want to buy the thing for $1000. Nintendo is best known to take a tech and utilize it in an creative ways. They have the Cheat Code now.(DLSS and RT) lets see what they do with them.

In a hand-held, no, it's never going to be close to a PS5/XBSX... I just want the days of a dedicated Nintendo console to return. I agree that Nintendo are creative with the Joycons/Wiimotes etc but it's rare to see 3rd party dev bother with it let alone utilise it to its full extent.

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Things change, plans change..

It's not coming officially out of Nintendo, so I'm not paying any extensive attention to it.

You're welcome to speculate to the moon and back. I'm not gonna do it at this particular juncture.

those day of nintendo doing a powerful normal home console are OVER.

What about the M1 Max? (Though obviously this is Apple exclusive)

Switch has outsold every dedicated console they had, with only the at-the-time underpowered Wii even coming close. Nintendo ain't gonna chase power ever again.
