NY Post: "XBOX'S QUANTUM LEAP"

The picture these mainstream articles are painting make GAF look as if we're on Mars :lol

They're four years apart, but when it comes to fast-paced gaming, the original Xbox and the upcoming Xbox 360 might as well be in separate galaxies.
It's the difference between "race cars and rockets," says Steven L. Kent, author of "The Ultimate History of Video Games," who previewed the 360 last week.

"They're both built for speed, but the difference is an order of magnitude."

Kent says Microsoft — which introduced the device in an unprecedented MTV special Thursday night — will turn the gaming world upside down when it releases the new lightning-fast console this holiday season.

No price has been announced.

Games will have wide screens, high-definition images, surround-sound and an improved ability to cater to multiple players and online competition.

How fast is fast? The combined processors — which determine how quickly a system can read information — are 12 times faster than the original Xbox.

"That would be like saying that a CD player spins its disc 100 times faster than an old LP record player," says Kent.

Kent was astounded by a preview of the forthcoming title "Kameo," in which the player must fight off 3,500 ogres at once — each with its own personality.

"I don't know if 'Kameo' will be any fun or not, but the fact that it can throw 3,500 unique enemies at you at one time flabbergasted me.

"If anything, the machine is too powerful," he told The Post.

The Xbox 360 can also serve as a home entertainment system — in other words, you can play MP3 files by connecting your portable music players to the system. You can also view photos and videos through the device and stream cable and broadband to the television through the Xbox 360.

Gaming technofiles are already oohing and aahing over increased processor speed, memory, and graphics — though most have yet to try it out.

:lol

General gamer reaction will filter through to the main media in time..I already saw a couple of articles (one on Wired) that mentioned, for examples, the underwhelming looks of most games etc.

So instead of how many polygons the machine can render its how powerful the processor is and its size this time around?

Oh, and dont forget teraflops.

quantum

The smallest amount of a physical quantity that can exist independently, especially a discrete quantity of electromagnetic radiation.

A leap of a quantum must be a pretty small thing.

Xbox 1.0001. :p

How many FLOPS!

Hmm, that's more than 99 Nights. That's encouraging, but I wonder how detailed the characters onscreen are.

Hehe, this guy lost all credibility when he said that x360 is too powerful. :lol

That reminds me of what Dave Perry said about the N64 unveiling in Next Generation oh so long ago.

Well maybe I went a little overboard, but the PS3 is suppose to be quiet a bit more powerful than the XBox 360.

You won't be seeing FF:TSW visuals for at least 10-15 years on consoles. The complexity of the visuals in that movie far, far surpasses what is possible, even from whatever PS3 will bring to the table

This is interesting. I doubt it though :P What sort of personalities do ogres usually have :)

Exactly. My local news station actually did a story on the MTV unveiling and one of the anchors was less than impressed. "I dont notice much of a difference between this and the Xbox that is already out." were roughly his words. Of course, he probably didn't see PGR3, GoW, or the other games that DO look next gen...but that was one of the main problems with the MTV thing. Too many of the games they focused on did NOT look next gen.

Not powerful enough to render Final Fantasy Spirits Within in Real time.

GSCube >> PS3 IMO

All ogres are mean and cold. Nasty little beasts.

I think Kent was treated to an exclusive preview of Rare's metrosexual ogres, I think that's what he meant by personality.

metrosexual ogres? That's a fucking megaton if I've ever heard one.

This only means that the Ogre will have all an AI for themselve. Wich will be the same AI but it's still different than if it was an AI directing the group.
In the screenshots we also see that it's the same fucking Ogre model copie-pasted 3000 times. PR are geniuses at playing with words to amaze the stupid casual crowd.

No actually.
PS3 should be >> than 16 PS2.
The Cell only has 40X times the floating power of the PS2 so it's 2.5 more powerful than GSCube.
And we still have to consider the GPU power.

Computationally I don't think this will be true, but in terms of memory, probably.

But even GSCube couldn't render it in real time. They made sacrifices, and obviously the lighting model wasn't the same as in the movie. They were also very selective about what scenes they used. I've never seen media from it, but that's what I read. I'm sure it still looked great, but technically, it wasn't doing TSW in realtime as it was done in the movies.

This thread needs Wallguy, heck, every X360 thread the next 2-3 weeks needs him.. so we won't forget. ^^

If someone could photoshop these two guys in with wallguy that would be great, thanks.

Holy shit. My PC is too powerful. I guess I better downgrade.

This is the very first time I have ever had to run something slower because what I had was just way to fast.

Nothing can ever be too powerful Kent, NOTHING :P

I still like the guy, but man, those quotes made it seem like they came from a totally different person.

All 3 of the new system are goona be crazy powerful.... it just depends which Games are gonna appeal to you the most :)

I'm gonna get a XBOX360 & PS3... then see what Nintendo has to offer :D
