So, my girlfriend and I are going to NYC in early December, and I've decided it's a good place to pop the question. She's lived their twice before and it's my favorite place ever. We've talked about moving to NYC together down the road in the next year or two as well (I work in finance she is a marketing writer, so it makes sense).
In any case, the fact that I'm going to ask at some point is a known quantity. The fact that I'm likely to do it on our trip to NYC is probably expected honestly since it's a bit obvious.
So, the question is how to do it. The ring is pretty well taken care of and I don't necessarily want to do something theatrical at all. Just a simple down on a knee move.. it's more of a question of where to do it.
Opinions on where to eat (especially the places below) and/or romantic places to pop the question that might be less obvious would be awesome. Especially those close enough to the places I'm looking to eat would be awesome.
We are both pretty big foodies, so a nice dinner before hand is going to happen.. the places I'm looking at are:
Per Se - never been to French Laundry, would love to eat at a Keller place. Obviously haute French cuisine.. should be a fun place to eat as well. Outside of Grant Achatz he is my favorite chef in America. 3 michelin stars, 4 stars in the NYT, 10th best resteraunt in the world on the top 50 rankings. This will come in around a grand for both of us though, which even as world famous eateries go is pretty up there. It's right next to Central Park at Columbus circle, so if we ate here a carriage ride to Bethesda in the park to pop the question makes sense? Would the park be relatively okish if we got there around 11-midnight?
Daniel - more traditional French cuisine, again on the Park but up around the Met instead of Columbus circle. Price drops to about 600 for both of us with wine. Again, 3 michelin stars, 4 stars NYT, 11th best eatery in the world. Not as much "fun" as the food is more standard French fare, but obviously one of the worlds best still. Central Park, carriage ride,Bethesda, etc all seems to make the most sense to me.
Le Bernardin - I love French provencial seafood. The problem is, I have the chefs cookbook and have recreated a lot of his dished with massive success rates. It's really really good seafood, but nothing is going to jump up and grab you as an amazing daring dish here. It also looks kind of ugly inside. And it's near Time Square which I find to be the least romantic place in NYC. So I guess it's probably out even though I really want to eat here badly. 3 michelin stars, 4 NYT stars, 18th best in the world.
11 Madison Park - 1 michelin star (too much contention from New Yorkers, 4 stars in the NYT, 24th best in the world). This is down on Maddison Square Park and is supposed to be a more laid back fun place to eat, and it's in the old Met Life building which I find to be a fun slice of history with giant ceilings. It's also next to Flatiron which is my favorite spot in the city. Sadly, she already told me that I can't ask the question in front of Flatiron (half jokingly.. but the other half was probably serious). Boo on her. I guess if we went here a Taxi ride to the ESB and I could pop the question on the observation deck late at night which would be an amazing view. Then again, seems like we would have a much harder time finding a quiet spot here, even late at night. And it would be the opposite of romantic if we had to wait in a line to get up there.
Thoughts? Opinions?
