Donald J. Trump declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns, a tax deduction so substantial it could have allowed him to legally avoid paying any federal income taxes for up to 18 years, records obtained by The New York Times show.

The 1995 tax records, never before disclosed, reveal the extraordinary tax benefits that Mr. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, derived from the financial wreckage he left behind in the early 1990s through mismanagement of three Atlantic City casinos, his ill-fated foray into the airline business and his ill-timed purchase of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.

Tax experts hired by The Times to analyze Mr. Trump’s 1995 records said tax rules that are especially advantageous to wealthy filers would have allowed Mr. Trump to use his $916 million loss to cancel out an equivalent amount of taxable income over an 18-year period.

They're earning new subscriptions. These are state tax documents from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Hey, sometimes to be a good businessman, you gotta lose a billion dollars so you don't have to pay taxes and support things like education, the military, veterans and so on.

That's called business, folks

I mean I expected something pretty significant, but this is totally insane.

To think that this is 20 years ago and there is likely more fuckery in between...

Seriously guys? Who the hell cares? It is not going to change much. Why does everyone act like these tax docs are going to turn the tide of the election?

I want to be so rich that my complete failures are better than everyone else's successes. Shot for the moon, and if you miss at least you don't have to pay taxes for 18 years.

Can't wait to see him and his supporters keep banging the "Hillary for prison" drum while this fucking idiot has committed tax fraud for two decades.

edit: this is a stupid post. he's cheating the law, not breaking it

Well, now we know. America my country, I am so proud of you. A wealthy man like trump doesn't have to pay taxes for 18 years while people that are starving do. Smells like freedom.

I'm not sure it's much of an issue. You have a loss, you can use that loss to deduct taxes on gains. But my understanding was that this applied to capital gains/losses. Is it different in this case?

Judging from the first line it all seems like it would be perfectly legal anyway? Seems like a non-issue if so.

Legal sure but now "That makes me smart" turns into "I failed so miserably as a businessman in the 90s that I haven't had to pay taxes in 20 years"

But really, who is the NYT's source that would have access to his returns? A former accountant? Attorney? Seems insane but Trump has no small list of enemies.

The article has some advanced language and my English is struggling a bit with it.

From my understanding, his loss makes up for 20 years of taxes, so legally he has to pay nothing.

How is that bad under your law? Is e exploiting something? Someone please help me here
