Inserting himself into the Republican presidential race, Pope Francis on Wednesday suggested that Donald J. Trump “is not Christian” because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said when a reporter asked him about Mr. Trump on the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.

Much more at the link, including the Pope allowing contraception in areas affected by the Zika virus.

It's nice to hear Pope Francis speak about against Donald Trump, but this probably won't affect his election chances.

Shots fired.

Should be interesting to see how the other candidates (especially Cruz) use this in the coming days.

Evangelicals don't care about the Pope at all so this won't hurt him. This will probably be sorta like when Obama spoke against Trump, it's like an endorsement.

Yeah the Catholic vote is largely Democratic. That said, the Pope is currently pretty frickin' popular here so it's just more general election damage.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said

Like building walls between same-sex couples, Francis?

This point is hot fire from Why I Am Not A Christian by Bertrand Russell

Then there is one other maxim of Christ which I think has a great deal in it, but I do not find that it is very popular among some of our Christian friends. He says, "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that which thou hast, and give to the poor." That is a very excellent maxim, but, as I say, it is not much practised. All these, I think, are good maxims, although they are a little difficult to live up to. I do not profess to live up to them myself; but then, after all, it is not quite the same thing as for a Christian.

Does Trump dare to fire back?

Trump already has been bashing Pope Francis

“So I think that the pope is a very political person. I think that he doesn’t understand the problems our country has. I don’t think he understands the danger of the open border that we have with Mexico," Trump said in a telephone interview with Fox Business' "Varney & Company" on Thursday, adding, "Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is because they’re making a fortune and we’re losing.”

Cool of him to say that.

Christianity is honestly a pretty radical religion, so it's a shame that Christian politics are so predominately oppressive. Persecution of gay people is not any more fundamentally Christian than the belief that the possession of wealth is sinful.

I await Trump and the other GOP candidates' responses to the Pope.

DONALD J. TRUMP RESPONSE TO THE POPE

If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians.

The Mexican government and its leadership has made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope, because they want to continue to rip off the United States, both on trade and at the border, and they understand I am totally wise to them. The Pope only heard one side of the story - he didn’t see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United States. He doesn’t see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation.

For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith. They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.https://www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/donald-j.-trump-response-to-the-pope

LOL

Most of the Christians I know claim that the Pope and Catholicism as a whole isn't Christian, so...
Yes, what does the Pope know about Christianity. Is the Pope a bald eagle brandishing an assault rifle who lives in the land of the free? Thought not. Nothing Christian about the Pope.

Every little bit helps. If this nudges the Catholic vote a point or two in a few key states, that's nice.

F yeah. Non practicing Catholics represent!

edit: I thought this was a free country? Why can't we question your religion?

They question Obama's everyday!

He actually doubled down on the racism. I'm not surprised, but this isn't a remotely convincing arguement of his Christian values and much more so of his racist values.

Incredible stuff, really.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian”

says the guy standing strong against gay marriage.

Go get 'em, Trump.
