This is fantastic. I love that Donald can't really talk poorly about the Pope himself, so he creates a conspiracy about how he only has one side of the story.

Also if anyone has the ability to questions someone's Christianity I think the Pope has the most authority. (Even if he isn't Catholic)

I think it's pretty terrible that this is even a valid political statement.

Amazing reactions. Trump supporters calling the Pope an asshole and unChristian.

By the pope's own No-true Scotsman fallacy, the Catholic church is not very "christian" as it is/has been one of history's largest suppliers of discrimination and hate to the world.
Tired of this hypocrisy and the revisionist history modern christians try to pull is especially fucking ridiculous

I love that Trump's narrative is "those crafty Mexicans lied to the Pope!"

It's just so over the top. It blows my mind that people believe this pomposity.

It has also a big bridge and they were both built a long time ago, in more appropriate times to build walls, but don't let common sense and history break that bad joke.

Regardless this just helps Trump among evangelicals and many conservatives who can't stand the Pope.

Donald Trump is a fucking asshole. Can't wait for America to get bombed because he runs his mouth.

All he does is spread hatred. Fuck the Mexicans, fuck the Muslims, now fuck the Pope? Fuck you Mr. Trump. Why do you want to be President of this country if you hate everyone in it?

While I agree with the Pope's statement it is a dangerous precedent. There are millions of other politicians in western countries who are not christian but label themselves christian. Starting with the last five US presidents (killing innocent people is definitely outlawed by Christianity, is it not?).

Not only is the Vatican wall joke non sequitur and stupid, but the Pope opened the vatican to refugees in September and asked churches around Europe and the rest of the world to house refugees at the same time, and the Catholic church runs the largest non-governmental refugee and immigrant services organization in the world.

Also the Vatican is 100 acres in area, or about 1/6 of a square mile. It's about the size of a small park. For some comparison, central park is about 850 acres. There's no legitimate housing, open jobs, or public facilities in this small park.

DONALD J. TRUMP RESPONSE TO THE POPE

If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians.

The Mexican government and its leadership has made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope, because they want to continue to rip off the United States, both on trade and at the border, and they understand I am totally wise to them. The Pope only heard one side of the story - he didn’t see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United States. He doesn’t see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation.

For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith. They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.https://www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/donald-j.-trump-response-to-the-pope

The only issue is the pope interfering with politics, and that institution has a long history of doing so, Christians are free to do so (and do, do so constantly) there are no major issues, there's even bible passages about fake believers.

Good point. However, many Conservatives agree with Trump on no refugees and stopping illegal immigration/building a wall. Hell, even 2/3 of GOP voters in NH agreed with the temporary Muslim ban. So, the Pope getting involved just helps Trump in the short term anyway.

People who believe in Trumps policies will continue to do so. But this is about fringe and undecided voters and the fair number of Catholic republicans, which is why Trump can't directly attack the pope because that would further narrowing his already narrow base. If this was any other person Trump wouldn't give a shit, but he's dealing with one of the few people external that can actually damage his potential base.

Plus conservatives already label the Pope a liberal so this plays right into the base.

That's because the current Republican Party is built on hate. It's no surprise Trump and his rhetoric is so popular.

Thing about Trump supporters is that they deliberately open themselves up to be lied to.

Trump's an atheist, for one thing, and most of his supporters probably know that, but they don't care, and at this point simply align themselves with his version of the truth, because it's successful.

Just like Patriots fans. or Lance Armstrong fans. They know it's a lie, but it's the number one lie.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Trump is an atheist, but he's definitely not religious at all. Everything else you said is spot on.

Trump is essentially a religion himself. If Jediism gets to exist, why not Trumpism?

The Pope can't hurt his base. If anything he could gain some evangelical support from other candidates since they don't like the Pope and probably think he should shut up. This probably helps him in southern states. Those Republicans who don't want a wall and favor immigration reform are likely voting Jeb, or Kasich anyway and aren't going to vote for Trump.

Evangelicals don't care about the Pope at all so this won't hurt him. This will probably be sorta like when Obama spoke against Trump, it's like an endorsement.

basically this, Roman Catholicism means nothing to Reformed Theology evangelical churches or Orthodox churches.

The problem isn't Trump's base, it's everyone else. And every one of these tirades pushes away more people. If white racists were enough to win the presidency, we'd have Romney in the White House right now.

Saying a beef with the pope won't hurt him is myopic in my opinion, the catholic vote is more or less evenly split and they're the biggest Christian denomination by far in the US.

The pope can hurt his support within the GOP (as in those that aren't already voting for him but someone else but potentially could), Trump's already pissed off almost everyone. Errosion of that type is the last thing he wants, when he's trying to consolidate.
