Your average Resetter is 5 Foot 10 inches, which is kinda surprising, since you'd expect them to be on some crazy soy diet or they insert god knows chemicals in their bodies.

The average height of men is 5'10 in the US. Sounds pretty accurate considering most of those people are male.

I don't claim to be perfectly learned or knowledgeable in the matter,
(Far from it I rarely felt welcome on Era and only joined because some people, including staff at the time, begged me to. Yeah it was okay at first, but I knew deep down that the friendly "fresh start" feelings would only last a few months at most, and after a matter of time the community would feel agenda driven at its core. Felt like an outsider regardless of doing things to spark community spirit like doing OTs, making news threads, self moderating my own threads to keep things in line, LGBTing avatars, doing pride month thread, etc)
but after a while I had to admit my own foolishness for giving the very same ones of similar group and mindset that disrespected me and got rid of me here (fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.) a chance to have them treat me as they did prior. I decided to leave the community after my next OT which would have been December, but the game got delayed to next month (In the end though, I got permed before I got a chance to do what I promised and then leave). I was done, ready to go because I was unwelcome, just wanted to keep my word, I didn't want to present pearls before swine and because I don't need a forum. If someone wants to hear me and we can have a constructive talk about something we love, that's awesome, but I'm cool with being me too. Frankly, that's how things would be. That being said throughout the years I have noticed some trends of the members in that community. I don't claim everyone is like this, of course not, but I would be very surprised if some of you haven't felt that more than a few in that community share one or more of the following.

1. Lack of resolve.

These are the types of users that go with the flow. They may have shared a viewpoint in the pass, but are so afraid of going against the grain that they will just parrot more well known or well liked users to feel accepted.

2. Lack of confidence.

These aren't the people who make a thread to ask and assess advice, these are the ones who get pushback for a valid, but maybe not sound to the majority, viewpoint and fold and apologize and bend the knee just to feel accepted.

3. Lack of friendship.

There are lonely souls online. Some people will do anything to even feel something close to appreciation and love. Some of these users dogpile on others just to be a part of something bigger, again to gain acceptance.

4. Lack of healthy mindset.

If there is one thing I've noticed upon my return to NeoGAF is that I haven't really seen any self-harm or suicide threads, at least nowhere in the scope at how they once were here, and how they tend to still be on Era. The truth is, there are people online who are using online communities as a crutch when they truly need help.

5. Need for control.

Wether it be non-objective, agenda-driven moderation or merely making sure that "we" remains a singular force, too many users I've seen feel a need to have a strength in numbers as opposed to speaking with their own voice.

What does this have to do with the "where else will we go" mindset? Everything. There are truthfully few places where these kinds of things can thrive with little to no real-world repercussions, and there are lonely and vulnerable people out there who would feel devastated should they lose their home, for better or for worse. Are they right? Are they wrong? That I can't say. What I can say is that part of the problem is that a chunk of users would feel lost without Era, and will stick by it even if they are, for lack of better words, suffering in silence.

I tend to consider myself a positive person, at least I try to be despite admitting I am not perfect. I know some of them might be reading this right now, to them I say read the first post of this thread and take EviLore's words to heart: it's a big internet.

It's a big enough internet to get help. It's a big enough internet to belong and branch out on multiple communities, not just one. It's a big enough internet to make some real good and do some real change. If you don't feel free to say what you feel, try a different forum. If you are lonely or in help, find help or companionship, it's there. If you want to take a break from things, take a break; you don't owe anyone an explanation. Most importantly, take care of what matter most, yourself.

Where else will you go? Why not inside your heart by taking a deep look inside and getting perspective and balance on yourself, on your life, and on your hobbies.

Just some of my thoughts on the matter, one person's opinion; go form your own, as you should.
You're speaking to deaf ears. Narrativists aren't interested in your pity or your sympathy. That's just not how narrativists think.
If you're interested, read this rather long blog post as it explains everything you need to know about narratavist groups such as Ree and also why many of the people there cannot ever fathom leaving the place, except if they are forced out by being permanently banned.

The main issue with the era exodus is most don't realise they followed the cancer that was in this site over to there....I think it's pretty self evident now and you would have to be pretty dumb not to realise something ain't right.

Thanks for the breakdown and effort put into that. Two things I do have questions on, how did SweetNicole use the MW2 meme incorrectly (is there a link available to the post, curious about the backlash) and what's is the significance of the guy by the trash can? I don't have enough backstory to understand them.
The actual picture is gone though, she removed it quickly. Could look for a link but yeah
I didn't get it at first either but since its a HL2 reference, Combine wants you to pick up the can, or pick up the ban. Funny enough, a reversed gif of this (Retracting the pick up) got no penalties, which goes to show how selective it can be.

Redneckerz Redneckerz JaseC leaving is a bit complicated, the reason is stated in the SteamERA Discord, but as it is not public info Im not gonna go into the reason in respect to JaseC.
From what i know is that a lot of the shitposting against the mods and mod critique did do JaseC in, basically.

You calling thinking people eating food with a lot of soy and peoples actual lenght got no merit to it at all.

This soy boy stuff is dumb as fuck.

No.

Oh, suddenly off-topic review bombing is a good thing:

https://www.resetera.com/threads/as...tre-dame-and-free-give-away-on-u-play.112400/

Whatever serves my cause is right.

Who are you pointing that at? Most people in PC gaming ERA sees review boming as a good thing as it's one of few ways to actually one of few ways to communicate with devs/pubs.

Ahhhhhhhhhh yeah!!!!!! Who is ready for their free shit?

Oh wait, WE gotta pay for it? Not the government? Well darn it then.

KSQF7bV.png

You do realize that most European countries, especially the nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland) has universal healthcare payed through taxes? What is so suprising about it?

Everyone here knows universal healthcare is not free, buy payed through taxes, but they found it to be a good healthcare system despite it's flaws as the size of your wallet should not decide wherever you live or die.

I bet you on thing: if a politican in the nordic countries announced he or she is against unviersal healthcare it would be political suicide. The system has been ingrained the countries for many years.

Like in Norway, the social reforms was started being introduced shortly after WW2 was over.

They aren't talking about universal healthcare though, are they?

They are talking about universal basic income.

Very different things with very different long term effects.

Consider what happens when every citizen can say "fuck it I don't need to work, the government just gives me money".
Who generates the taxes then?

My mistake, sorry to JordanN JordanN too, for whatever reason I read it as "universal healthcare".

My point still stands about unviersal healthcare, but it was not what the dicsussion here was about.

Sorry, again.

Well, for the record, I totally agree with you on universal healthcare.

Yes, it's flawed but "the size of your wallet should not decide wherever you live or die" is spot on.

How am I commenting on "PC gaming ERA" and how would what most people think there be relevant to this?

There's even comments acknowledging:
"wtf I love review bombing now "
"The negative view on ERA about user reviews just highlight a shocking truth:
A lot of users never read reviews. "

There are threads where it seems a lot of people are in favor of stopping review bombing.
You might be right and that most of Era are in favor of review bombing. Honestly, the better response would be that Era is torn on the subject, which seems to be the case., and that I would have to point out someone "flipping their view" as my implication was.

I mean, that's basically what Jawmuncher implies with his statement, ignoring other, more personal reasons.

Irrelevant either way. JaseC well, they had worse folks running as staff, so yeah.

JaseC has stated in the Discord the reason he "abandoned" the Internet. Unless you got inside JaseCs head and he lied about what he stated in the Discord, you are wrong. And where does Jaw imply anything? Haven't read anything from him.

You ought to read my post carefully and see what i am referencing. It is on page 224. I am also stating that that his explanation obviously ignores other, more personal reasons by JaseC, so nowhere am i proclaiming that JaseC is lying, which is a strange translation of my post.

Golden topic

Ah ok. No worries, I see now.

I find it absolutely hilarious to see Jawmuncher and others complain that the community is hostile towards them and their moderation. Their community is that way because they're drunk with power and are, quite frankly, absolutely shitty mods. They have zero accountability in their actions, and truly believe people are just hostile towards them without reason.

While the mods here aren't perfect, people aren't overly hostile to them or bitter because they actually do a damn good job. Nobody is walking on eggshells around them and their warnings and moderation efforts are done fairly.

ResetEra mods, and the old GAF mods, seem to have the impression that being a mod makes you immune to criticism. Maybe if they were less concerned with being ResetEra "celebrities" and more concerned with being decent moderators they wouldn't have their community being so sour to them.

Sorry for the rant xD
There seems to be a general hostility in ERA. They're always suspicious. I don't know what happened there. But there is a distinct lack of camaraderie. You're not a member really. You're a poster. I never mess with communities so maybe it's tighter there.

You can even see that mods are aware of it.

A lot of the admin initiatives are received poorly and posters are rather harsh to the staff.

I think that the heavy moderation style leads to many people tip-toeing and some tensions since probably most groups of similar interests have lost a couple of in-group posters already. This can lead to lashing out. I feel that a similar tense atmosphere was common here prior to the break up. Not everyone is tip-toeing, not everyone holds a grudge, but if a certain share of users do, you quickly end up in a situation where moderators will have a hard time participating as "normal" discussion partners.

They've got themselves into a persecution complex both internally and externally. Anyone that disagrees with the groupthink is accused of being a troll, alt account, Trump supporter, Russian troll farm, white supremacist or whatever else. Era belives it's more influential than it actually is and they are being targeted.

I agree, I stopped contributing as much as I didn't feel there would be a sincere discussion and the chance of getting a ban was not worth it.

You should post more here, you post some pretty interesting topics at times.

Exactly. You can't expect to follow the main source of the cancer and all will be well. I don't know how some didn't see what was going on. It was obvious to see what was going to happen.

NewGAF was the real "reset". ERA is just continuing the same destructive behavior they once did here. They're not builders, only destroyers.

It's not even that so much. The general hostility is all over. I remember Sweet Nicole posting some COD Steam pic and she got roasted for many pages. It was a poor post, sure. I but I didn't get the dogpile. Sweet Nicole wasn't given the benefit of the doubt as a longtime member and community contributor, she just posted a poor pic and there was no mercy. It just seems very tense in ERA. I didn't notice it until I requested a month-long ban for work reasons.

Moreover, there is just an air of negativity about the world that is rather palpable. I get it, the world is messed up--people are starving, there is sex slavery all over, climate change and so on. But the general atmosphere is not of problem solving and ingenuity, but despair and pessimism. There is also some progress--Steven Pinker and Hans Rosling have documented this--although I see their work is now under scrutiny. Even without looking at that what has happened in China and India has been modern-day miracles. And yes, I know China and India are not utopias.

But I have no beef with no single posters on ERA. And if see my post count and activity, I'm pretty active there still. And i have a few posters that I make the place worth visiting, but the constant confrontational style (not toward me, but toward others as in the Sweet Nicole example) and just general negativity has gotten to me lol. Maybe, I'm just there too much.

I do like the activity and pace of the site. Those are its strengths.

I wouldn't mind posting this on ERA itself, but they lock any meta-discussion very quickly.

You might want to request a name change here, Era have banned people from here that also post on Era for being honest about them. That's how petty they are.

I used no ad hominems nor really complained about ERA moderation. I was more critical of the board culture. Also, I would not change my name. Had this for ages. If I'm banned for such a bizarre reason, I'll be banned.

But I never have received a ban or warning on ERA. I don't really get into much-heated arguments. Nor do I insult other posters. I'm pretty level headed.

I got two bans here tho lol.

Nailed it in this post :)

There are over 200 pages so maybe I am just repeating the obvious here but, I was browsing the bans section because it's quite funny some times and I came across this clear contradiction by the mods.
1. A user is banned for apparently spreading misinformation by saying people are getting banned for just saying they will still buy the game.
2. A user actually is banned just for saying they will by the game

Be careful folks, apparently saying "I'll still get the game" is an inflammatory driveby, don't you dare say that about any game ever.

Is Resetera so fucking pathetic, that they don't think the average Neogaffer couldn't see a dumbass bot like this coming from a mile away?

I hope you guys thought your funny little prank was worth the 5 seconds of attention. I'll be honest though, like all your other escapades, it was barely a dent against Gaf.

I guess this thread really does anger the simple minded at Resetera. Well too bad to you bitches, we'll continue to expose the hypocrisies and racism you SJW's don't want the world to see.

The main issue with the era exodus is most don't realise they followed the cancer that was in this site over to there....I think it's pretty self evident now and you would have to be pretty dumb not to realise something ain't right.

The thing is that cancer lies more in the moderation and some vocal members rather than the userbase at large. You could see it in the first few weeks when everything was super positive over there and only a few posters were complaining about not being tough enough on social issues.

Whether sincere or not, the moderation shifted to a more hardline stance on protecting the minority voice (as in the one not represented by the majority, not literal minorities).

Let's say moderation magically knew what everyone on Era was thinking and they started to ban everyone that

1. is right wing in some way but keeps their head down
2. is largely apathetic to social issues and just wants to talk about games
3. shrugs their shoulders at "social transgressions" in media giving the bear minimum of condemnation to it
4. is aware of social issues and voices support for marginalized groups, but doesn't let it consume their lives and is capable of remaining friends with and having a conversation with someone they vehemently disagree with on said issues (and thinks the moderation goes way too far here despite agreeing with the message)

There would be MAYBE 500 posters left, and that includes semi-active ones. A far cry from the more than 45k members they currently have. You can see it in the polls just how big the discrepancy is between what's on the surface and what's actually a true concern for a lot of these people.

If Cerium put up a new thread tomorrow that said "Change of rules, from now on there are no banned games and only explicit malicious bigotry will be actioned as everything else is too subjective", there would be no mass migration. Yes, some people would leave, probably the 20 or so active members of the sexualization in gaming thread and random pockets of people here and there. But for the most part, it would only leave a small dent in the userbase that would quickly be replaced thanks to a more welcoming and less trigger-fingery environment.

Really well thought-out post. It's not really the bulk of users over there causing the issues, it is the moderation and the small band of ideologues running the show who taint everything (and everyone) else.
