so now that it's practically over, i find out that i've got the olympic basketball channel. smh. at least i'll get to watch usa/argentina live on the west coast

I didn't notice until Sunday that we were getting USA HD. I'm hoping it stays but since it's in the 1700-1705 Olympic section only, I doubt it. I've enjoyed watching Monk in HD this week :(

This one for the kooks who think this line of thought is somehow racist..

In an interview with The Associated Press, [China coach] Lu [Shanzan] said Asian gymnasts are naturally smaller than their American and European rivals.

"At this competition, the Japanese gymnasts were just as small as the Chinese," he said. "Chinese competitors have for years all been small. It is not just this time. It is a question of race. European and American athletes are all powerful, very robust. But Chinese athletes cannot be like that. They are by nature that small."

So Bolt is passing to Powell, that's surprising to me.

Indeed. I thought Bolt would anchor. I'm also disappointed in the Jamaican women. After seeing the US make the same mistake not once but twice, you'd think they make every effort to at least be accurate in their baton pass. It really was their race to lose.... At least they dominated the 100m and 200m races so it's not all a loss.

I am so glad that the fastest team won and not just most efficient. Trinidad nearly dropped it. I wish america was there to defend.

Japan for bronze, that's a OMG if there was ever one. Jamaica streeted the field here, so kudos to all, especially Powell who had done it hard without a gold. Bolt's 3/3 now.

Hooker and Lukyanko tied at 5.85m!

I think Hooker works by frightening the bar. he is NOT a good looking man.

Not meaning to take anyway from asafah but Bolt really gave him a lot of space to go on.

Also apparently the british team are contesting that the Jamaicans were the cause for them making the mistake. Though they just ran the final so what would happen if an appeal was successful in this instance.?

Woo Jamaica managed to win with a new world record.
Does Powell run the 200? Some guys are just better at curves than others, so sometimes the fastest runner on the team isn't the anchor. If Bolt is a significantly better curve runner than Powell, it makes sense. It is NOT all that easy to stay in a lane on a cure when you're running balls-out as fast as you can.

Could be that, or it could just be a respect thing for the older runner, who knows.

Despite the obvious shortcomings of our track team this year (and disappointing women's swimming), we've actually met or surpassed our medal total from 96, 00, and 04. Some of the more 'fringe' sports for America have done well these games. Nice job by our athletes.

Powell is 100M specialist. Bolt is a 200M specialist. The Olympic final was Bolt's 12th ever 100M. He ran 9.72 in his 5th run over a hundred.

So Bolt would be a much superior bend runner.

I'm sure they were placed to play to each of their strengths. But really, what part is Bolt weak in? It would have been great to see him try for the 400m as well.

The commentators were saying that they seem to have done it to give asafah the limelight behind bolt. Apparently asafah is fixing bolt's car back home. So you want to give him some credit and make him feel good. Also something quite interesting all 3 winning teams ran under the old world record. I guess chasing after a team like the Jamaicans is quite some motivation.

lol. They were nowhere near us, and our team screwing up isn't a valid reason for appeal.
But, I'm not sure what they could do. Jamaica didn't finish either, so they can't have their time taken away, the final isn't going to get rerun, and we were no more deserving of a medal than the three countries who legitmately won it.

jamaica is practically out of the photo finish since they were so far ahead

:lol Won by almost a full second...it's just insane. Smashing the previous record by 300ths of a second is also stupid.

I think Powell running the anchor leg was a combination of Bolt being a 200m specialist, and the team showing respect to Powell who before this race had never won a gold medal at a major meet (for a guy who was the 100m world record holder barely 9 months ago, it almost sounds absurd). So this was a great way for him to finally get some glory. Smooth move by the team.

Bolt with three sprint world records in the same meet...again, more silliness. Dude is just a stud.
